  1. Chompers definitely reeks. Have also had success with their drop shot worms. Before I bought them, I remembered reading something about leaving the bag closed in the house and car, so I never made that mistake. The wife probably would of made me throw them out too tho. hah
  2. I cast with my right hand and then swtich to reel with my right hand. I know it doesnt make sense from an efficiency standpoint but it just feels right that way. I also don't think there is a correlation between fishing success and the way you do it. For example, both Iaconelli and KVD do it the same way I do and I don't have to list off their achievements.
  3. I would just like to first say I am not in the market for a stella, however I am very curious as to how many of you own one, and if so, to what degree is it superior to say a reel like a sustain or other spinning reels priced in that 200-300 range. Man is it pretty. droooooooool
  4. I had this problem when I first started out as well. To keep things simple, treble hook lures you should be using a moderate action to help play the fish better. Also, treble hook lures are generally baits that you are moving quickly through the water column and will generate a bite that nine times out of 10 you will feel regardless of your rods action. For example, Jerkbaits they will usually hit on the pause and you will feel the weight when you go to jerk again, crankbaits the lure will get heavy or stop vibrating etc..therefore a moderate rod that will bend more throughout the blank is more important so you don't rip out those trebles. A moderate action will also help delay your hookset and allow the bass to enhale the lure and close his mouth (this is especially important if you are using a graphite rod) As smalljaw said, single hook lures you should be using a a rod with a fast action because it helps you detect bites better due to a more sensitive tip. These lures you are usually fishing on the bottom and are in constant contact with your lure, or at the least a semi-slack feel. MY basic guideline would go as follows: Frogs, Pitching and Flipping - Medium Heavy to Heavy Power with a Fast or X-Fast Action Texas rigged worms and senkos and Jigs - depending on the lure weight...Medium, Med/Heavy or Heavy Power with Fast or X-Fast Action Jerkbaits and Topwater - Medium/Light or Medium with a moderate action Crankbaits - Medium/Light up to Medium Heavy Power with a moderate action Spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits - Medium Heavy Power with Moderate OR Fast Action (I prefer moderate) Drop-Shot, Shakey Heads, Grubs, Finesse - medium/light all the way up to medium/heavy with a fast action Of course there are more techniques, but this covers the majority. Hope this helps somewhat.
  5. Theres likely nothing wrong with the wavespin. I've actually heard that it works in terms of staying birdsnest free but...Personally, I would never buy a reel that was marketed via a corny infomercial.
  6. Yea definitely not your rod. If you are texposing correctly, it will not take much pressure from the bass to release the hoopoiint from the worm. When you feel the fish, try doing a reel set instead. I rarely miss fish on a shakey head. Not sure if you menitoned but what size worm are you using, if its 6 inches or bigger, try using a 4 inch. They could just taking the tail end.
  7. Thanks for the replies. I do have a flipping setup with 65 lb braid already for the nasty stuff. I guess the question is more about should I go with braid for the sensitivity factor? Do you guys throw braid/mono or fluoro for your texas rigs, worms and jigs?
  8. I think there is a 7 ft 4 medium fast and a 6 ft 9 medium x-fast. Either would work well.
  9. Hey folks, put together a dedicated jig/word rod for next season. Its a mhf veritas paired up with a curado 200e7. Will be using this outfit for the following applications: Jigs (mostly football heads and boo jigs) Light Duty pitching Carolina Rigs Texas rigs 1/4 ounce and up I have heard some say 50 lb braid is the way to go, but I am leaning towards 12# or 15# YZH. Would love to hear what everybody thinks. Thanks in advance. Phil
  10. Ive always loved the look of the patriarch. Very good looking reel and very smooth. Almost bought one last year but opted for a curado. I wouldn't be concerned with the durability of either, both companies have been doing this a long time and are known for putting out durable reels.
  11. I think the early batches that went out were bad but Abu apparently addressed the problem. I recently picked one up after hearing better reviews this year. Gotta love that white rod. I would however suggest looking down the guides before you buy one, they have had problems with the guides lining up properly in the past as well.
  12. I agree, the Fenwick Smallie rods are supposed to be awesome and if you can find one for under 100 bucks than I think it would be great married up with a president or sahara reel for that application. That would put you under the 150 dollar mark.
  13. Its hard to say, I throw my spinnerbaits that are a 1/4 ounce and up on a mh casting rod with a moderate action. I find that the moderate action helps delay my reaction just a bit so the fish can take the spinnerbait a little deeper...same concept as with crankbaits. The medium heavy action though lets me fish timber and grass with confidence. This is where a spinnerbait was meant to be thrown, and a ml rod will not fit the bill no matter what manufacturer. For weightless senkos though, medium light should work just fine!
  14. Go flurocarbon...if you are fishing around stumps or you want to keep the lure higher in the water column, than fish 20 lb test. If you want them to run a little deeper and are fishing sparser cover than go down to 12-15 lb. However square bills do excel around wood, so maybe compromise and call it 17 lb if you only want to choose one line
  15. have not seen any power craws at any storefronts around here...but found some on the net for you http://www.americandiscounttackle.com/Berkley-PowerBait-Power-Craw-SBLURE-1008.htm on the topic of realistic craw baits though...I have always wanted to pick up a pack of the huddlebugs. to me they look like the realest thing you can buy. Pricey but so are senkos... http://www.***.com/Huddleston_Huddle-Bug_Pre-Rigged_5pk/descpage-HHB.html
  16. Another tip you might want to try is to try and get the lutr to spin around 180 and look at the fish. Most good jerkbaits can do this if the right action is imparted in the lure and the x-rap does it real well. The key is to twitch the lure and then immediately throw slack back into the line...so it basically is a twitch from 9 oclock to 6 oclock and then move your rod tip back up to 9 oclock really quickly. Hang on because they will try and rip the rod from your hands.
  17. Learning how to read my electronics.....
  18. If you are a fan of Zona like me, I just realized you can watch full episodes of The World's Greatest Fishing Show on his website. http://www.markzona.com/showz_wgfs.php Since I am Canada and can not watch his new show on the Outdoor Channel, I hope this will help pass the time. Just less than 4 months from our opener...sigh
  19. I'm guessing you watched the latest round of Major League Fishing :)
  20. I think you would be better off with shimano or pfleuger IMO. I have picked up a W&M spinning reel before and it felt pretty good, but I have heard the drag performance is subpar. If in doubt, stick to a brand that has proved itself time and time again. A president or sahara/symetre will work just fine in that price range and will last you for years to come if you take care of it.
  21. cant go wrong with a shimano..dont own anything lower than a saros but the sahara is a fine reel for the money.
  22. x2 on the NRX 893 with a Core 100MG7
  23. "tick, tick..BOOM"...I freakin love that
  24. picked up a damiki buzzbait last week and look forward to fishing it. Heard great things about all of their hard lures too. The guy at my tackle shop said they are the loudest buzzbait on the market...hmm
  25. I am noticing that the line tie on this lure is at a 90 degree angle. Does this mean that a straight retrieve with a swimbait on the back would not work correctly. Is it merely to be fished deep and on the bottom as you mentioned RW?
