  1. They still get used but they tip them with nightcrawlers.
  2. It's crazy how people will line up shoulder to shoulder for eyes. Even in the dead of winter when the night bite starts they stack up at Erie on the rocks fishing for eyes.
  3. I use to fish with a guy who was from Romania if I remember and he schooled me on carp since that is the deal over there. You need to try and make it a competiton and that's how yu get them to bite. You take a can of corn and poke some holes in it and throw it out there. Then you also just throw some corn out there on top of the can. They will start to compete for the corn so when you throw your hook out there all they are worried about is getting the food and they will grab your bait in the frenzy. Other then snagging carp I have very and I mean very limited success hooking carp but I did use this method once after being told this and it worked like a champ. There is also some crazy way you tie the hooks and rig it but I don't remember.
  4. I don't understand why people say that it's more difficult. It doesn't have a memory and it's rough texture by nature makes it easier to sense with your thumb. Not to mention backlash after backlash will only make line harder and harder to cast. Also putting line on your reel wrong can cause huge problems even for people with a good thumb. I would much rather blow up a reel spooled with braid then any other line.
  5. My grandfather dug a goldfish pond for my grandmother and eventually bluegills turned up. It was in the middle of the backyard with no other water anywhere around it. Also frogs showed up and painted turtles but I believe the turtles were put there later. How they got there exactly is a mystery but they found a way.
  6. All I see any more on here is talk about the Keitechs. They are all the rage now I guess. I use screw lock swimbait hooks or as trailers on swimjigs and chatterbaits.
  7. That is not true at all about braid. You can mangle braid as much as you like and it will be fine. There is no such thing as a backlash that can't be pulled out and if you are really having problems cut the lure off and pull it out from underneath.
  8. I just picked up a rage blade the other day. I only fished it briefly just to check it out and it was difficult to fish it with any depth. It seems legit as I was intentionally running into stumps and rocks ect with out getting hung up but keeping it down was a problem.
  9. Basstrix D bombs Ribbits I use these 3 more then anything
  10. If there are places you can't reach because of brush or have to make awkward casts because of branches I would recommend a machete. That is as long as it will be ok and depending on how dedicated you are to get there. I started using one last year to reach places way back in the woods no one has ever fished. Or to make casting easier in places and give you that angle or distance you could never get. As for the square bill guy you don't have to bang them off rocks and stumps ect to catch fish. Being on the bank you have the best position to parallel the bank and just grind them along the bottom. They are also very effective over weeds. You just need the correct crank for the depth and one with the correct bouyancy. It takes some practice to get good but it can pay off huge. I caught a bunch of fish today running them over grass a foot or so below the surface. A minus 1 can really put a hurt on ponds that are choked almost to the top with weeds.
  11. At a $1.50 I would of bought as many as I could and totally on the hooks since you can't get any better then they come with. I only found a handful of them on eBay and that doesn't seem promising for the future. I don't know why they discontinued them. It is a very well made bait and straight catches them. I guess maybe no one was buying them.
  12. It makes the spool lighter so you have a easier start up.
  13. It all depends for me on how I feel but much prefer to use moving baits. I like making tons of casts and covering water and almost always start out fishing that way. Some days I might just want to throw a tube and do that the whole time but not often. Plastics are like a gurantee bait and no matter the conditions you can always catch at least something on them.
  14. I just came across this bait at a tackle store I didn't know was right by my house. It's more of a bait shop really and most of it is old dusty crap I would never want. But they had 2 of these in trout that I got for $5 each and they have been killing it. I come to find out though after looking they don't even make them anymore. I have caught so many fish on them already and it hasn't even been 48 hours.I really like everything about them but am bummed since they no longer make them from what I see.
  15. Red eye shade work well but I rarely use them anymore. They are so easily throw off balance from anything on them and it gets super annoying when your fishing grass or dragging it.
  16. Usually I work a fluke as a topwater or for the most part. I have always had the best success working it quickly on light wire worn hooks. A bunch of quick twitches so it noses up out f the water works great or constantly twitching it super fast over vegetation that comes up the the surface so it is darting all across the top of it.
  17. The amount of backing I use depends on the size of the line I put on. The reels that have like 12# have way more backing then a reel with 20# on it. I also don't tie to my backing anymore and just use a small piece of electrical tape to hold it on. With heavy line you can feel the knot sometimes if your casting way out there and it can make your reel stack to one side. It might not be so much of a issue with smaller line but I run 15# or more on most reels and lines like CXX have a larger diameter and most my reels have CXX now a days.
  18. I always like a moderate / glass rod now for anything that is pretty much constantly moving if possible depending on the situation. Fish really get the whole bait that way and they stay hooked better. Really unless your fishing a spot where you really need that tip to be able to snap your rod like that I see no advantage to a fast or extra fast. I will fish the same bait on different rods if I need to make a switch. I also fish moving top waters on the same. I throw tons of ribbits and I use a glass spinning rod now and I don't even know theast time a fish missed it or I pulled it out of his mouth and it go skipping back at me.
  19. Ya the maps on the site are lame and like hard to read. If you look on Google maps there is a million ponds out there.
  20. Wetting the line probabaly matters more for some knots then others. Like tying a palomar with mono or something and not wetting it will burn up your line and get it all curly. That even happens when it's wet of its to tight when who go to pull it through. I also tie a sandiego jam and have never burned up my line pulling it down and I know I don't always wet it. It just makes it easier sometimes to slide it down the line.
  21. All I seem to ever use any more is a San Diego Jam now. I even tie it with braid now and it has never failed me yet. It can be a little tricky with braid at first because it doesnt want to slide down and bunches up. Just grab the knot and twist it down the line if that happens and it will slide right down. Do the same the thing with other lines if it looks bad like ti will be a bad knot and it should come out perfect. Also when I tie it I only go through the top loop. I don't actually know if that is a different knot but it has never failed me since I started tying it last year.
  22. My #1 line. It has probably the least stretch of any line I have ever really used other then braid. Not to mention.the amazing sensitivity and toughness.
  23. Where on tusc? I have never really ventured down it looking for spots to fish but around me its dirty and fishing is fairly crappy. A bunch of people I know say they go down there and catch pike a lot.
  24. I never have but really want to and for sure have to take a trip or 5 down there this year. There are so many ponds down there is it's ridiculous and if a new state record is caught I would put my money on it being caught there. There are probabaly tons of places no one has ever fished but just getting there is the problem. I would for sure bring a float tube so you can actually get to spots.
