  1. I hate to hear stories like this. After spending 5 years on a trawler and basically my whole life around the docks, I know exactly what these guys went through. I also know all about fishing thorugh 15ft seas. There is nothing comfortable about it. You really can't explain it well enough to convey to people that haven't been through it. Even steaming home though that stuff is a mess, and there's no chance for any rest at all. In my years on boats, I was in 2 mid-sea collisions on 2 different boats (it was after the second one that I decided to call it quits...too many close calls, ya know?). Neither crash was truly life threatening, but if there was any kind of sea for the first, we would have gone down for sure as the other boat put a 3 foot hole about a foot above our waterline on the transom. Luckily it was flat calm for the 13 hour ride home. I'm glad your buddy and his crew are safe, and again we'll thank the Coasties for the great job they do it these situations. If anyone here ever wants to get into commercial fishing, I'll give you the same advice my father gave me when I started: There's nothing on that boat that won't kill you. Remember this, and you'll still be lucky to get home alive.
  2. Just thought I'd put out a feeler for any skiers in the Northeast. I have a season pass for Killington, Attitash, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and (ugh) Mt Slow. I also have a share house in Ludlow, VT, so if anyone's in the area and wants to meet up for some shredding, gimme me a holler...
  3. To take the courtesy to another level, if you're nice to these guys, they may let you know when they'll be there, and when they won't, hence allowing you to fish under and around their blinds. If they're floating blinds, there's a pretty good chance there's some bass holding under it and I always find its better to ask and get permission than to just fish there and tick people off. Just a thought...
  4. When I was commercial fishing up here on Long Island, we'd say "West is best, East is least." I went back over my logs from then, and I was pretty amazed at what I found. Genrally, the fishing was steadier and more consistant with the wind from a westerly quarter, yet, the biggest hauls we had came from an eastern wind. Otherwise, during an east wind, it was pretty slow. Basically Feast or Famine with an east wind. Adding up the total tonage between the winds in a year, we caught more on a west wind about 3 to 1. As for the idea of the wind moving plankton, bait, etc., I do agree with the principle that wind will "pile up" the bait, but I find its more on the leeward side (the west side in an easterly wind {windward->->-> leeward}) of points and not so much on the windward shore. As Roger said, the wind affects the water current very little, but the bait fish have an inate sense to be in calmer waters, with the bass hanging on the fringes to scoop up easy meals. Imagine watching a trout behind a rock in a river. All around the water is moving downstream agressively, but the trout finds that small oasis of tranquility behind the rock's eddy. When the fish sees something to eat, it darts out to grab it, and moves back to his safe spot. I know the condidtions aren't quite the same, but you get the picture. Lastly, since I usually fish in a canoe, I hate the wind because its always a long paddle home against the wind...
  5. I am, apart from being a bartender, a window cleaner. In the winter I wear these Seal Skinz gloves. WHile they may not have the fingers cut out, they do keep your hands dry and warm. I've never used them for fishing, but they might do the job... http://www.greatoutdoorsdepot.com/seal-skinz-gloves.html
  6. My fat lard of a cat...he's put on a few (coughs) pounds since this photo...probably 'round 20 lbs now...
  7. Guess we're all gonna have to wait for the Leonids in December...Ah well...
  8. Bah, it was too cloudy around Long Island to see crap. Too bad, hopefully LBH had better luck up north.
  9. Looks like someone been watching Gallagher and George Carlin ;D ;D ;D ;D
  10. Or the buddhist monk who believed if he fell in a fire, he would make an ash of himself... Here's another "wise old saying": He who fart in church, sit in pew.
  11. LBH, you sure got that one right. My dad is gone 10 years now, and I miss him just as much now as ever, maybe even more so. I wish I had been more connected with him before he died, but you know how young men in their early twenties can be, all aloof and acting like they know everything. I don't have any tats or piercings (I know, I am about the only one in the world), but I think for memorial purposes they're really cool. Just make sure you are sure about it, since they are relatively permanent.
  12. So much fun I played it 3 times...scored 24 every time...weird Nice way to remind us how much we missed you last week Mr. Mudd
  13. ugh...between you and Avid, I can't stop laughing on this site
  14. Yep, and its just so hard to pointing the camera in the right spot at the right time. You'll need to be pretty lucky, but with it being almost 100/hour your chances deffinately increase. The lack of moon light will make for an even better show. If any of the pics come out, I'd love to see some. Also, there's another big one in a month if the clouds roll in too thick tonight. According to the Farmer's Almanac (I love that book!) its on the 13-14th December and it lasts all night long. Pretty cool way to usher in the winter every year...
  15. Oh, man, what a scene that must have been. I liked the part when the bible came out of the woman's purse and she started beating the guy with it. Better than listening to an old time radio show!
  16. Its a tough call, but I will root for Michigan. I really can't stand OSU since I had a jerk of a roomate who was Buckeyes through and through. It doesn't really matter, though, its just a way to see who Rutgers is gonna play in the championship 8-)
  17. Against the Wind - Bob Seager Begin the day with a friendly voice a companion unobtrusive Plays that song that's so elusive and the magic music makes your morning mood
  18. Nice, I'm glad I found this post early enough to plan for it. If you want to take some pics, I find the best way to do it is with a super slow exposure, if your camera can slow down the shutter. A friend and I took some pics about ten years ago with a long exposure and the pics came out pretty good, lots of streaks across the film. TBH, though, if someone didn't know what they were looking for, you'd think they were just crappy pictures...
  19. I've always thought about using a slug as they're all over my porch at night, but I just can't bring myself to use those slimey things. On a similar note, I haven't found a plastic slug that matches the real slugs I have here. They are a dark greenish-brown with lots of leopard spots on their back. Anyone know where to get 'em like that?
  20. Oh, man, I am so jealous! I played club hockey in college too, but I actually had to pay for ice time since we weren't really a part of the school. If you're lucky, though, you'll get to play in Madison Square Garden once a year...made it all worth while. Kepp your stick on the ice!
  21. Everyone thinks I'm weird for this, but all the die-hard Yankees fans will appreciate it... I start growing my Van Gogh the day the Yankees are done for the season. I shave it off when pitchers and catchers report for spring training.
  22. And now for the latest...The Yanks sent Jared Wright and a whole bunch of cash to Baltimore for Chris Britton. Who? C'mon Cashman, we need real pitchers, not an 0-2 reliever and some unproven prospects. As of now, the Yanks only have 2 starters signed, Chin-Ming Wang and Randy Johnson. Moose will probably get resigned this week, but that still leaves us with a 3 man rotation...
  23. I did the Yahoo dl of IE7 and I have had no problems. I can't say that I actually like it more than IE6, but after a few days I got used to it. I just hope Murphy's Law doesn't come attack me after I've posted this...
  24. A monitor over the bed? Jeez, what happened to the good ole days when people hung a mirror over the bed?
  25. I have 2 tried and true methods for relieving a hangover. The first is to drink 2 litres of water before going to sleep. It will re-hydrate you, and sometimes, if you're lucky, all that mixed up liquid in your system will make you throw up which will deffinately help you in the morning. If I haven't had enough water, I find that the next day an egg sandwich with cheese (no meat) chased by a bottle of Nestle's Quick is spot on to make me feel better.
