Anyone ever try Trilene Ironsilk?
Think of that green wire the florists use when making floral arrangements and realize that iron silk probably isn't that limp.

max RPM on a 125 Merc
That wasn't that Black Hawk rebuild place in the Pittsburgh area was it? BTW, while a 115 can probably do 6k alright, I'm not so sure you're not headed for a premature meltdown running at that RPM for very long.

quantum reels
I am not exactly sure but, I believe there are laws determining how many years a product was on the market that coincides with the number of years that they must produce replacement parts. If it is only on the market for a short time, there are a set number of years for which they have to have parts available. That's sort of a urban myth. I work in the consumer electronics repair business and the part availability issues raises it's head from time to time on nearly new products. I don't know the exact wording of the law but I believe the manufacturer is only supposed to keep a certain percentage of parts available for a set number of years. The parts chosen are at the discretion of the manufacturer. In the case on say a TV set, if they merely keep all the resistors and capacitors in stock (relatively cheap parts), they've fulfilled their end of the obligations. As for the more expensive parts like boards, cosmetic parts or IC chips, (the ones that actually fail) those usually aren't kept around for financial reasons.

what do you think about fishing tackle
Cart leading the horse. I would suggest that goods need to be made cheaper for sale in the US because it's harder to find a decent paying job anymore since we've shipped too much of our manufacturing overseas. Those jobs have been replaced with service end jobs which pay far less. As for cheaper manufacturing overseas? Besides paying vastly less for labor you also have to take into account the lack of enviromental and regulatory costs that no longer have to be factored in. You can work people harder and longer outside the US without it costing you more. Same can be said with pollution and land use regulations which are virtually non-existant in many of these foreign countries like China or Mexico.

I guess I have broken more laws then I thought.
Missouri Anyone under the age of 21 who takes out household trash containing even a single empty alcohol beverage container can be charged with illegal possession of alcohol in Missouri. How can I be in possession if the container is empty? It is illegal to have oral sex. uh oh. Natchez: It shall be unlawful to provide beer or other intoxicants to elephants. Thank God I can still take my pet Lion down to the bar at happy hour and get us both drunked up for half price!

Shipping $ for a rod and reel separately
Once a package gets over 6 foot in length the shipping charges go to a balloon rate. Then it's a formula based on weight * length * girth. The kicker is in who measures it at the PO. Some counter people will merely measure the diameter of the tube which gives you a cheaper rate, others measure completely around the tube which obviously will be a longer measurement thus, a more expensive rate. Typically, a 6'6" rod going most anywhere from my home city of St Louis would cost around $18.50 -19.50 with delivery confirmation. Ins. is extra. If they measured using the diameter I would pay only around $12 for the same rod. It just all depends who's running the counter at the PO. A reel will cost you around $5.50 - 7.50, delivery confirmation included/no ins.

quantum reels
I've used Quantums in the past. Pretty good reels but I had issues with them that caused me to no longer consider them. One being parts availability. Had a 2 or 3 year old AC400 that had a chipped level wind gear on it, the part was NLA per quantum. Seemed unusual that a part as important as that and made out of plastic would be unavailable so soon after production especially considering it's the type of part that could fail easily. Two, the finish on Quantum reels, regardless of what it is, seems to wear off, chip off or whatever way too quickly. While it's just a cosmetic thing, it makes the reels look more worn and beat up than they really are.

Buying a new tournament caliber boat - need some guidance
The closest Champ dealer is in Monroe NC. South of Charlotte. If you're a big guy like you say, you owe yourself a ride in a 210. The consoles are exceptionally roomy underneath and getting in and out of the cockpit area is very easy.

2008 member challenge ideas
One other suggestion I have is to turn the challenge into a lure of the month challenge. For example, everyone is challenged in March to catch a fish on a jerkbait, April a crankbait, May a spinnerbait and so on. The lure chosen should be season specific so those attempting to use lures they haven't in the past or don't have a lot of confidence in, will be a lure or technique that could provide the anglers best chance at scoring a fish and thus, becoming confident in that bait. In other words, I wouldn't choose jigging spoons in April when the fish are normally up shallow. It forces everyone who wants to participate the opportunity to learn a new lure or technique.

2008 member challenge ideas
That's already been happening. There have been several get togethers on this forum within the regions listed. Most have been just for fun tourneys. The Missouri event last year had everyone chip in a lure as the first place prize.

Boat Buying advice
I'm not sure I'd call a 30 year old boat for $1650 too good to be true. I knew a couple guys that owned those Arrowglass boats way back then. If it's a 17 1/2 footer they were rated for a 115hp. That is a wood constructed boat. The odds are better than 50/50 that there's rot in the stringer system and transom. If there is, the owner would have to pay me to tow that thing away.

What are you waiting for????
I'm waiting for just the right flippin/pitchin stick to come across the forums. I'm also patiently waiting for some Daiwa TDA 150P's to show up on Ebay or the forums for decent prices.

LCD Monitor Problems
It's time for a new monitor. LCD monitors and TV's for that matter are a liquid crystal screen that's backlit with little flourescent lights. In the case of your LCD, the inverter, the circuit that fires the lights ,is probably going bad. That circuit is part of the LCD panel, not available seperately and the LCD panel isn't economical to replace.

Don't they know it's 2008?????
Do you buy Playboy for the articles? ;D If you hung one of those up, would anyone really care what year it was?

Stuff You Bought , recommended here, that you didn't like
I pretty much know what I'm going to buy, at least the expensive stuff like rods, reels, boats, etc. It's the lures, some I haven't had a chance to try yet. Senko - vastly overated. It seemed for awhile that that's all that anyone ever threw on this board. It has it's time and place IMO. It can be outfished with other baits often. Swimbaits - I bought some cheap ones. I'm not about to invest $20 + on a single lure that you have to throw half a day and hope for one bite. I still haven't caught a thing with them. Chatterbaits - :

Deal or no deal!!! Let's see your deal!!!!
My best deal was a NIB, Lews BB-1NG. Never used, all the goodies. I got it for $60. It sold for substantially more on Ebay. 8-)

brand boycott
The only thing I'd refuse to buy would be a BPS brand boat. Nitro Tracker Tahoe I've seen too many bad experiences by others to ever invest a dime into those tubs.

got to re-format
Or a second internal hard drive or partition your main HD. I just Re-loaded windows Sunday after getting a really bad virus (my own stupid mistake). What I found out on my reload was Firefox, Vers. 2, stores bookmarks differently than previous versions. I lost all of them. >

gasconade river
I can't speak from direct experience but from what I've read, even the Department of conservation is smacking their heads and yelling "Doh" on their decision to re-introduce otters back into the wild without taking into account a lack of predators to keep them in check. Seems the otters have been literally feasting on the gamefish in the rivers and when done, will move across land and go after farm ponds or fish farms if need be. It was a really stupid mistake by the Mo. Dept. of conservation and they have opened up the otter trapping season with earnest. BTW, both the Big Piney and Gasconade are great rivers for SM. Try going further up river on both.

No Reel Seat
I owned a Tennessee handled spinning rod for a long time and loved it. I'd change the tape every other year. It allows you to properly balance the reel on the rod easier.

Barrett Jackson Auto Auction
I see the hammer price on a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang, like the one I used to own and realize I only paid $1600 for mine back in 1976. What was I thinking?

How is it made?
If you check in at the Discovery channel, I think it's discovery. There's a program that shows how lots of things are made. One of their segments shows exactly how a graphite fishing rod is made from start to finish. Very interesting.

New or Used?
In all the boats I've owned, 2 were new, the rest used. Of the 2 new ones, both had problems that needed correcting. One had an intermittant problem with the motor that took almost 1/4 of a year to finally diagnose. In each situation the repairs were covered but the sad fact was the fishing trips I took the boat on were basically ruined because of the malfunctions. The used boats, especially the current one, have had problems but nothing as severe as a rebuild. Mostly minor stuff. New boats are just like cars. They depreciate FAST! This is a great time right now to find a good condition boat that's only a couple years old with the warranty on the motor for 20-30% off the cost of new. Lots of people are in over their heads with the sub prime home loan deals and need to get rid of the boat payment. Look around.
