If that's anything like a MK power drive TM, there is no really good way to mount the 'ducer cable to the shaft of the TM.

Yes. That's the star drag control knob. As I mentioned in my directions for tightening the handle, the knob is spring loaded. The Pflueger style handles aren't like typical baitcasters that use a handle nut to hold the handle on. The star drag assy doesn't screw onto the main shaft either and is moveable to facilitate taking the handle off.

The handle has probably slipped a notch. To tighten: tighten down star drag all the way, then grab the star drag and push it down (it's spring loaded), while holding down the star drag turn the reel handle to screw it down and get it to grab a notch or two. It's probably the only weak point on the reel or the Patriarch for that matter. You have to push down on the star drag with your finger tips in order to be able to turn the handle to tighten it. Awkward? Yes.

Sad, sounds like a runaway.

Hey, it doesn't matter how much you check, how many times you measure, you're still taking a sawzall to the deck of your boat and cutting a big hole into it. It tends to send chills through anyone that's done it. That's why I suggested drinking beer ahead of time.

Something doesn't jive about this story.

After launching at the lake, unbolt all the TM mounting bolts. Unplug the the foot control so it's free. Now deploy the motor. If it doesn't fall in on deployment, give it a kick, that should get it going on the way to the bottom. Make sure you're in deep enough water so that the position of the TM on the bottom of the lake doesn't interfere with other boaters. Reload boat. Return home and then purchase one of these.

I rarely need to control the spool with my thumb since I got my dual brake Patriarchs. I go fishing to fish, not to pamper a temperamental bait casting reel.

I've noticed that the formula for determining the surcharge is completely determined by how the person at the counter interprets it. Most of them charge me a standard $18-21 to ship, others seem confused by the formula and what exactly to measure and I wind up paying much less. It sounds like you've got some postal worker that doesn't understand the formula. I'd always make sure he/she was working when I shipped rods. It is not an employee error! Check the regulations for Priority and you will see. It depends. Anything over 72" can go into the balloon surcharge rate if other factors such as diameter and package weight trip it. In my case, that well casing is schedule 40 which is heavy. It sends most of the meters off the chart UNLESS the worker decides to measure the diameter and not the circumference of the tube. That's always been the kicker. The guys that know me at the PO (I've shipped probably a hundred rods) will punch in the diameter and skip the circumference, that gets me a cheaper rate.

Ask those who seem to think that the minute amount of 'backplay' in Shimano reels make them inferior. Steady son, steady. You haven't been drinking your daily koolaid have you? You would have no problems towing up to an 18 1/2 foot fiberglass bass boat. If the motor is a V6 you may experience slow downs going up steeper hills. If you wanted to go to a slightly larger boat, I'd suggest trailer brakes. BTW, if the jeep doesn't have one, a tranny cooler is a must. It would be standard if it came with a tow package.

Had the reel been just for P/F I would've said the STX hands down, especially for that price. Throw in the frog factor and I'm on the fence. The Curado E is a 7 bearing reel with graphite end plates. Seems as though Shimano isn't capable of engineering a lightweight reel without going down the graphite road. Not that big of an issue on the palm plate side but I think I'd like my mechanics on the 'guts' side of the reel to be planted on something more solid than pencil lead. Just get a Revo S. Even cheaper.

Between the 2 reels. Ergonomics. The Morris reel is larger than the Patriarch. It's kinda like the comparison between the old Curado 200B reels and then the 200D's when they came out. On the rod, the Morris reel has a big feel to it. Very solid. As for the finish? The Morris reels, the HB versions and previous years had issues with the coatings on them tarnishing and flaking. Not these. The Titanium deposition finish on these reels is solid and incredibly durable. I never thought I'd ever like that metal feel to my reels but honestly, I find them more comfortable to fish with during a day than a normal painted reel. I'm sure the Shimano Calais feel the same way. Crankside mechanics. If you tear the 2 apart, the mechs inside are similar but upon closer examination, there are some differences between the two, especially on the pinion slide assembly that are clearly not interchangeable. Both share the same Pflueger style spin on reel handle along with the odd star drag assembly. The main gear in the Morris reel is huge and made of brass, the Patriarchs is smaller and made of duraluminum. That's a significant factor in the big weight difference between the two. Another thing, I can pull the crankside guts out of a REVO STX and drop them into a Patriarch and the reel will work perfectly. (I've done it!) You can't do that between the Morris and Patriarch. Palm side mechanics. This is where the two are nearly identical. Both use the same 6 pin, spring loaded centrifugal braking system. Both use the same, identical magnetic braking system. It's on the palm side where the Patriarch loses it's identity with the Revo's. The Revo linear mag system is not the same as the Pflueger version. Fishing wise. These are both very fluid, solid, easy to cast reels. By correctly setting up the spool tension, cent. brake and mag brake (often not even needed) these reels are virtually thumbs free casting in just about any fishing condition. In comparison? Consider the Morris to feel like a larger sportscar like a Dodge Viper and the Patriarch to feel like a smaller, more nimble Porsche 911. Hope this helps.

A lightning rod is only about $10 more and is a far better rod.
