  1. Those first 3 bass, feeling ashamed of falling prey to a fishermen, went and met with the lake's headmaster bass. Usually the largest fish of the lake. After explaining they fell prey to an In-line spinner, the headmaster scolded the 3 fish for not paying attention to the "Lures you'll most likely see during tourist season" class lesson that was held in the spring when the bass were schooling. He then told them to go forth and spread the word.
  2. With wanting a 25hp motor I assume you're primarily fishing an Il. lake with a 25hp motor limit like Coffeen? One thought is buying a rig with a slightly larger HP motor, selling the motor and then purchasing the 25hp motor. Craigslist usually has a bunch of motors in the 25hp range for sale.

I thought this was going to be another "I'm the real father of one of Michael Jacksons kids" thread. ;D
  4. Most boats that are free, just tow it away, are usually in such bad shape they're not safe to float in and the costs to fix them up will cost you way more money to fix up to make it water worthy than if you simply saved the money to get a better boat that's already water ready.
  5. A new baitcasting reel for under $50 that's the best? There isn't one. They're all chinese made and of fairly low quality. It really won't matter which brand you buy. Just pick one, it's a crap shoot.

C'mon guys, cut him some slack. He said plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  7. A little tip on ledges when fishing the Rogue bite at LOZ in late Feb - March. As you cruise along in many coves, you'll often come across darker, ledge type rock outcroppings on some banks. This is a tipoff that the creek channel comes in close to that bank at some point and there will be more of those ledge rocks under the water. Those are dynamite spots most of the season, especially so early in pre-spawn and a real super hotspot if that area is adjacent to spawning coves.
  8. Sharpen those willow blade edges enough and you have a slicer capable of slicing the cheese thin enough for use as a salad topping or any pasta dish. Just keep it away from carrot sticks though, you may wind up with a jullianed rod tip.

  10. Who'd have thought that a BR roadtrip kodak moment would happen when everyone was in the restaurant eating breakfast and Burley staggers in the room in his pj's!
  11. 1. Big Daddy. That's it. It's on my short list ONLY because that flick was saved by Kristy Swanson in a bra.
  12. The majority of the answers to my question were exactly what I expected. I'm in the middle of downsizing my rigs. I'm dropping 3 off the list as their uses are redundant and overlap with other rigs. I decided to sell 2 of my supremes baitcasters. They were in very good shape. The buyer notifies me that the he got the reel out of the box and immediately noticed a grinding feeling when he turned the handle and a loud noise. He wanted to return it for his money back. Now, I know that reel worked perfectly when I shipped it so I pried a little. His response was, despite the fact the reel made that grinding noise he stripped the line off of it so he could put his own line on. He then disassembled the palm plate and "oiled" the reel to see if that got rid of the grinding. Of course, unless he's an odd one, his response, especially stripping line off in order to put his own line on makes no logical sense if the reel is broken and NOT as described in the item description. I told him to return the reel but that I would not refund any money if the reel had been damaged or altered by him. I immediately found the cause of the grinding noise when I removed the palm plate. The mag brake holder was falling out of the brake assembly. I found oil all over the inside of the reel, on the spool ends, on the spool surface itself along with oil underneath the mag brake assy. That's when I knew he had pulled that brake assy off. If you know anything about those style mag brakes, if you disassemble them, they're a pain in the rear to put back together. The natural inclination is to snap the magnetic holder back onto the mag brake assembly. If you do that you break the catch on it that allows it to ride on the cam. That's exactly what I found. I immediately notified him he'd have to file a claim, that I wasn't refunding his money and told him what I suspected he did to the reel. I told him I'd be happy to return his reel along with a couple sites that could sell him the part he needed to repair the reel he broke. It just goes to show you that while many folks are afraid to deal with ebay due to unscrupulous sellers, there are quite a few buyers who think nothing of trying to put the screws to a seller.
  13. The reel was advertised with a 3 day refund policy.
  14. Ebay's changes, much of them meant to attract buyers to the site, have left sellers more vulnerable to being ripped off by unscrupulous buyers. Add that to the fee increases and it's not hard to figure out why there are fewer sellers there and many stores that shuttered their E-doors. It's not just Ebay though. A flea market approximately 12 miles south of me was one of the biggest in the state for years. The past 5 years or so they've been jacking the rates on sellers who sell there full time and for those that just show up every once in awhile on the weekends. The place is a ghost town now. The buildings that held the full time dealers are nearly vacant. The outdoor pavilions that held others are the same. The number of temp sellers has dwindled to 1/3 of what it used to be. Essentially the flea market owners priced themselves right out of business.
  15. Like I said, whether he was operating as Harry's fishing reels or his new handle, Bevs, his MO was the same. His item descriptions are cut and pastes. In fact, he uses the same photo's over and over too. His reels normally sell for quite a bit less than others being sold even if they're the same model, etc. I'm sure the reason is nobody wants to take the chance of purchasing a used reel where the item description is obviously merely copied over and over along with pictures that are not representative of the exact reel being sold.
  16. The palomar knot is as close to a "tie it with your eyes closed" knot as you can get.
  17. I recognized the item description as soon as you posted it. bevsfishingsupplies He was formerly selling as Harry's fishing reels or something like that over a year ago. He sells a ton of reels, his Feedback score (at 1527 right now) isn't close to how many he actually sells. I doubt he takes the time to go over every reel he posts nor actually knows if any of them have problems. I have probably purchased around 40-50 reels from this guy in the past. Maybe more, I can't remember. I've only had a couple problems from him and he resolved my issues pretty quickly without resorting to the paypal resolution panel. I get the feeling he has some connections with BPS reel repair even though he's located in Florida as he sells a lot of BPS product. BTW, as for his item descriptions? They're copy and paste, over and over. He has never given an item description that actually reflected what the reel he was selling looked like or performed as. In my experience, most of the time they're accurate or even better than described, a few times not.
  18. If you purchased a reel off of Ebay that was described as operating smoothly and you took the reel out of the box when you got it and there was a grinding feel along with a loud noise when you turned the handle, what would you do? Choice 1. Inform the seller immediately of the condition of the reel and ask for a refund. Choice 2. I'd start by stripping the line off that came with the reel so I could put line of my choice on despite the fact the reel is making a grinding noise. After that I'd disassemble the reel and squirt oil all over the internal parts, ie, spool ends, the spool itself, mag brake etc. to see if that would stop the grinding. If that didn't do it I'd ask for a refund. I'm just curious.
  19. Medicare kicks in at age 65. 65? Ouch. That's 15 years of providing your own healthcare coverage if he wants to retire at 50.
  20. Looks like you guys had a great day on the lake together. 8-)
  21. Retirement plan. Build a portfolio. Watch greedy wall street investors and mortgage houses crash it to the ground. Start all over again. After 51 years of living I've found it's impossible to "plan" for anything. It's amazing what life can throw at you on a lazy Tuesday afternoon when you least expect it. I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to fully retire. I'm not even sure I would want to unless I had a sack of money under the bed which allowed me to really live life the way I wanted to. I certainly look forward to the day when the daily grind of going to work everyday becomes less of an issue. I'd love to have the ability to take more time off. Something that becomes more important as you grow older. As for your plans. Health care is the most important aspect of living after 50. Since medicare doesn't kick in until you turn 55 at the earliest, (I think), you'll have to shoulder the burden yourself. Healthcare coverage costs really start escalating after age 50 because that's when most peoples bodies start falling apart (literally). Not too mention, it's often wise to have additional coverage beyond what medicare offers.
  22. My favorite song by Reverend Green Let's stay together at the Apollo. I'd like to add Nat King Cole to the list as well as Dean Martin and the velvet Fog, Mel Torme.
  23. I've just never understood tatoo's. To permanently mark your body for life for a momentary whim seems nuts. I feel the same way about body piercings. At least with those you can take them out.
  24. My wife is a funeral director and worked in a funeral home in the nicer part of town. Her experience was most are just plain folks. Then there were the others. Due to her business, she can't just turn those folks away and think she'll keep her job. Instead she found that if she pushed back when they attempted to brow beat her it worked out quite well. Those folks are suffering a loss just like anyone else but they just don't know how to turn "it" off. Once my wife laid down the rules as to who was in charge and directing the funeral they actually turned that egoist side off and started acting like everybody else. For many it was quite a relief to let that side of themselves go and turn things over to somebody else. They found a side of themselves they probably hadn't experienced in many years.
  25. It's not unusual for a Yammie to be stubborn to cold start. Mine is the same way though 9 - 10 trys? Nope. Starting my motor after it's sit is a little bit of fiddling with the cold throttle lever and the choke. Once the engine has run that first time it turns right over the rest of the weekend with ease.
