You have to listen to what they say very carefully. They do not say they caught them all or just the big ones on the baits and tackle they are hawking. They say they used the baits and tackle in the tournament. Ike is a master at promoting his sponsors' products. So listen to what Ike says at the Classic's weigh in or an interview and focus on his words.

A gentleman outside of Suffolk, VA who has a small crawfish farm brought a blue crawfish to one of our crawfish boils. They do exist and we have them in Virginia. Never seen one in the wild but then again, I don't look for them.

Fishin, I swim about three times a week and I take various baits with me to drop to the pool's bottom to see how they sit and move. It is very interesting to get to the bottom and see the baits as the bass see the baits. I suggest everyone try it at least once with one of their favorite presentations.

Since we can't discuss politics on the Forum we are at a big disadvantage due to the politics in the commercials. The Audi commercial was excellent. However, it was bought out today that Audi does not have any women on their international board and only two females on their USA board. So they shot themselves in their foot. Other than for the Skittles commercial I really don't remember them or care to remember them. A number of my friends will no longer drink Budweiser products and like stated above, they will avoid 84 Lumber. Maybe we will have better ones next year. P.S. I really enjoyed the game.

BassBaitCaster, Now let me get this straight. You are in Maine. Main is next to Canada. It is ice hockey season in Maine. It is skiing season in Maine. It is ice skating time in Maine. The lakes and ponds are frozen in Maine, or very close to be frozen. And you are not getting any bites at a local pond with dirty water. Local man says there are big ladies in the pond. OK. I got it. And you ask, "So, at what point do you decide that there are not any bass in a pond?" Answer: Next Fall if you don't catch anything in the spring and summer. Where are the bass now? They are deep. Holding deep and not wanting to move to catch a meal or snack. They will save energy as best they can. But they have to eat. So where do they go to eat and find some warm water? They go to the northern and western shore where the sun beats down and warms the water. Your first places to start are the northern and western banks as the sun warms the water. Do you have any idea of what forage is in the pond? Large bluegill and bream? Minnows? Crawfish? Small catfish? Frogs? Turtles? Throw some white bread on the water and note if any minnows, bream and bluegills come up to feed. If not, you may have to go with other forage they may be eating. Would the pond support crawfish? Do you have a swimming pool thermometer? If not, get one. Attached to a long cord, throw it in the pond. What is the water temperature? 40's? 30's? The colder the water the slower the bass' metabolism and the less likely they will be interested in your presentation if they have already eaten a minnow. Could take up to two weeks before they will feed again. What to throw? Smaller baits retrieved slow. Ever heard of "dead sticking"? If not, look it up and give it a try. Boring, but it can produce results in cold water. You have a lot of homework to do both at the pond and at your computer before you write off the pond. Check out articles on winter fishing; winter presentations; effect water temperatures have on the bass; how deep will the bass go in the pond? What forage is in the pond? Can you meet with the individual you spoke with about the history of the pond? If he does not know maybe he will give you the name of the individuals who know about the pond and who stocked it with what. Read, read and read. Experiment, experiment, experiment. And let us know what happens. You may have to wait for the water temperature to warm up into the 60's before the bass will become active. In Maine that will be in June. But don't give up on the pond just yet. Give it one season and keep trying. Let us know what successes you have or if you give up and move on to another pond.

Yes Wayne, you are correct. And it is not the law enforcement agencies fault. You would be surprised how many other bass fishermen have no idea what counties or parishes they are in as they move around during the day. On Lake Gaston you can go in and out of Virginia and North Carolina all day long. Or where they are, exactly, while on the water or at a ramp. A ramp can easily be determined by a 911 operator in the county or parish and help can be on the way. But some of the guys I fish with don't even know the names of the roads the ramps are on or you have to transgress to get to the ramp. We know how to get to the ramps but if you ask me and many of my friends we have no idea of the names of the roads we take. And others have no idea what creeks they are fishing during the day. That is why I carry on the boat and also have a flare gun. If I call law enforcement I want to be able to fire a flare so they will know where I am on the water. We don't have many conservation officers in Virginia. Around 130 to cover the entire state. So we have to depend on local sheriff and police departments to give us assistance. And some of these great departments do not have access to watercraft at all ramps or on the water. So your comment above is correct. The local sheriff and police departments have only "so many" officers and they do the best they can.

MassBassin, you are in Massachusetts so I am surprise that you just found out about the requirements eliminating lead products. Although tungsten is much more expensive than lead, I think you will enjoy using the weights as you will be able to feel the bottom and structure better than with lead weights. As for a tungsten jig, if it is the law to use these products then please do so to be legal. Send Mike at Sibert's a personal message and ask your questions. Good luck.

Your post reminds me of the tourist that asked a New Yorker how do you get to the Radio City Music Hall? The New Yorker replied "practice, practice, practice." Same with bass fishing. Read, read and read some more. Study your adversary. Know baits and techniques. And know your body of water and how the bass are "supposed" to move around each season. If you are losing baits try wake baits, topwaters, spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits and shaky heads. You will then be able to fish all three levels of the water column while reducing the probability of getting hung up. Picture your bait in the pond and if you picture there is a high probability that it will get snagged. If so, use a presentation that reduces the possibility of getting snagged. Bass fishing is a challenge but very rewarding. Your job is to learn all you can about the different aspects of the sport and you need to know the body of waters you fish. Southern Cal really does not tell us anything other than the girls and weather are beautiful. Let us have your background in the Introduction section, too. May I suggest taking your rod to your favorite tackle shop and try some reels on it? See how it feels. Balanced? Fits the seat snuggly? Feels confident and comfortable in your hand? Weight OK? Line test parameters march those on your spinning rods? Remember, the higher the reel's nomenclature (1000, 2000, 2500, 4000, etc.) pertain to the size of the spool although the higher number reels are larger. Any name brand is a good option. Bassun, I just removed all mono and flouro line off my reels this past Wednesday, February 1st. I usually do it over the holidays but got lazy. I left the braid on the reels. I use Gamma line. Found it to be excellent and many of the pros use it. But I also use Ande and it is a good line. Taking one reel to Wayne Knabe in Powhatan, VA, next week for servicing. It is imperative that we all remove and replace all flouro and mono on our reels within three days before we hit the water. I was fishing a tournament on Lake Chesdin a number of years ago with a guy named Robert and Robert lost a beautiful young lady and his only RICO when his line popped a the boat. He then looked at me and said, "I guess I should have changed my line from last year." Live and learn.

Get a few and "dribble" them around. Maybe you will have a "slam dunk." You can "pass" the information along to us after you use them. You can put on a "full court press" and nail those bass. But if you use them in a year end tournament don't "choke." Just go "as deep as you can" before you bomb. So give them a "shot." And let us know what you think and catch. (Just having some fun. You are a UK fan and basketball is UK's sport and the SEC's only hope in the tournament.)

I make a mean chocolate cake from scratch. And you should see me beat up some instant chocolate pudding. I cook Louisiana style. Usually make my fantastic seafood gumbo (shrimp, crab meat, lots of bay leaf) for the Super Bowl but just not into it now. Maybe later for our LSU gumbo party this month. I follow Chefs Prudhomme's and Folse's recipes and the food is outstanding. Have made this cake before and it is a Louisiana favorite. Catt knows what it is.

K, your major obstacle is not having a boat. My club in Richmond, Virginia, is the only one in BASS Region 3 and Region 6 to allow nonboaters to join. Your FLW and BASS state federations may be able to help you unless the people in charge don't care about nonboaters. Sorry to say but this is true throughout the country. Don't give up. Fish local ponds and hone your skills so when the opportunity presents itself you will be ready.
