Two parts to my answer for your consideration: Cranking success is in the rod as you need a rod that can cast your bait, set the hook and fight the fish. A "crankbait specific rod" is your best choice. Start with the Bass Pro Shops Cranking Stick information as a base and you can't go wrong. You will find that the rod manufacturers like to use a baitcaster set up for crankbaits so check out other "crankbait specific rods" at the Forum's sponsors web sites or give them a call. They will be happy to discuss why you need a "crankbait specific rod" for crankbaits. Use the "crankbait specific baitcaster rods' information to base your selection of a baitcaster or spinning rod for your crankbait presentations. As for the reel, a baitcaster reel of your choice, as long as it is either Daiwa, Lews or Shimano. Some like the slow 5:1 while others like the faster 7:1 gear ratios. Your personal choice. The second option is a spinning set up. As long as your spinning rod has the characteristics of the baitcaster "crankbait specific" features you should not have any problems. A 7-foot, medium heavy spinning rod may be best for you. You can cast, set the hook and fight the fish with a 7-foot medium heavy spinning rod. As for the spinning reel it depends on the reel size you find is more comfortable to you. I like a 2500 reel size while others go with the 2000. When selecting your combo in a store don't be bashful - put the reel on the rod and see how it feels. Do this for both baitcasters and spinning rigs. Remember the number is the size of the spool. Higher the number the more line it can hold. I use spinning rigs for Shad Raps. Works fine. It is a 7-foot medium heavy, fast action tip. I no only use it for Shad Raps but I have used it for other crankbait presentations. No problems. Just make sure your reel's line test limitations balances with the rod's line test parameters stamped on the rod. Also check out the bait size to make sure the rod can handle your favorite crankbaits. Let us know what you select and who helped you make the selection. Good luck.

I don' usually follow college basketball but this year I have noticed that any one team can beat any other one team on any given day more than in past seasons. I am used to seeing ACC or Big Ten teams plus Kentucky and Kansas as Number 1's. And I am used to watching UNC, Kentucky, Kansas and Duke in the upper echelon of college basketball. So seeing Duke and Kentucky struggling this year has me somewhat confused. With upsets each day it will be interesting to see the final rankings; the tournament seeding; and the tournament games. This March may produce the wildest and craziest NCAA basketball tournament in a long time. So don't put your money on the name brand teams. There are a lot of teams who can pull upsets, even the ones not included in the Top 25. We need to start another thread on who we pick for the championship as tournament time approaches. Will be a fun March.

By the way, guys, I sent the author of this thread a personal message with the information I received from the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries biologist who is in charge of their crawfish studies. OK Alabama Freak, let's discuss the answer to your question. First, the Chatterbait - A "bladed jig" that you swim through the water like a spinnerbait. Second - What is a good line to keep the Chatterbait in the correct depth and having the shock absorbing features of a quality line and a strong test rating? Answer - Any fluorocarbon or copoly line with a test of at least 12-pounds. Some guys and gals go as high as 17-pounds but a quality 12-pound test fluorocarbon line will give you the necessary stretch, shock absorbing properties and strength to land those ladies. You have your favorite fluorocarbon line so spool it onto your favorite baitcaster reel and hit the water. Now, does anyone out there want to chime in on the reel ratio you suggest the Alabama Freak use for this technique???

Great having you with us and even better that you have a Tracker. Be sure to post your Toledo Bend results out of your Tracker. You will be out fishing the guys in the Rangers, Bass Cats, Skeeters and Phoenixes. Catt is the leading expert on Toledo Bend so look up his "Do You Want to Learn Toledo Bend" posts. He is a great guy and he will give you any help you ask him for. What college are you attending in that neck of the woods? LSU-Alexandria? Or Northwestern State in Natchitoches? Either way, get that degree! Right. It is where you land the bait and how easy and soft the bait enters the water. Casting is one of the major principals of bass fishing that is ignored by the majority of bass fishermen. And when you can't cast to a target you don't get bites and you lose confidence in your skill level. It is imperative that everyone practice their casting, flipping and pitching in the off season. And remember to keep that elbow next to your rib cage when you cast. A very important factor in casting perfection.

In Richmond, VA, we have at least 8-inches and it is still snowing. Son called us on Thursday night with a wonderful offer of having both grandkids stay with us Friday since school was closed and he and his wife would stay at home and work and frolic around the house without any clothes on. Knowing that the roads would be closed and the three roads leading to our property would be unpassable due to the snow on both Saturday and Sunday, we quickly decided that it was best they stay in the boonies at their own home for the weekend and enjoy being a family. So we dodged that bullet. Wife is quilting and I just finished putting all of the 500 pounds of tackle I took off the boat earlier in the week back in place for this spring. Took me from 8 to 2 to get it done. Now to strip the reels and put them, along with the rods, away. I surrender to the notion that I am not fishing until March at the earliest and probably into April if I can stand it.

Last I looked, about two hours ago, we had 8 inches. And it is still coming down in Richmond.
