  1. It all comes down to the tackle you use, I have not admitedly fished an A-rig very much but have no problem throwing it with my Dobyns 795 swimbait rod . That said I would imagine it would be quite a chore with conventional tackle .
  2. I'm with you on this one Mike as are the vast majority of anglers on the B.A.S.S. tour .
  3. I've got 2 worms for you to try , a 10" XCite Maximus on a magnum jighead and a Texas Rig 10" Big Bite baits Kriet Tail worm have performed very well for me . As others have mentioned the Rage Structure Bug has a knack for attracting bigger fish .
  4. It's funny how different fisherman see things differently as I don't consider the 130 to be a big lure at all , I recently had one of my best days in a long while fishing for largemouths in SW Michigan with my best 5 weighing about 22 lbs which is a very nice stringer for my area anchored with a 6lber & 4lber . If it's not too big for our fish I 'm sure it will catch fish anywhere in the country . That said I also throw large swimbaits at times and when you see a 3lb bass choke down an 8" Hudd it changes your perspective on what a large fishing lure is to a bass especially largemouth .
  5. There are a lot of opinions on this subject , I will tell you what works for me. I have 3 Dobyns 795 swimbait rods , on 2 I have a Curado 301 and the other is a 301 Tranx. I have 1 spooled with Sunline Shooter Florocarbon, 1 with Stren Hi Impact mono and one with 65 lb Power Pro . I use the mono rod for topwater hard swimbaits and when I 'm trying to keep sinking hard swimbaits higher in the water column . The 20 lb floro is when I fish sinking hard swimbaits/ glidebaits or line through swimbaits . If your going to use Floro make sure it's a line you can trust, so far this fishing season I have not had 1 break off unless you count a couple of soft swimbaits that the toothy critters stole from me . I just started fishing straight braid for fishing soft swimbaits through the grass , other than that I prefer the other lines . The sweet spot for the 795 swimbait rod seems to be lures in the 2 to 3-1/2 oz range , though I will occasionally fish baits as heavy as 4 oz and as light as 1-1/2 oz . I have fished jig hook soft swimbaits with the 795 and straight floro but I've had too many fish come off and I 'm looking for a stiffer rod next season and I 'm open to suggestions . I've resolved not use braid with a leader because it seems like no matter what connection knot I use I will eventually see a heavy bait go flying off after it breaks so I 'm done with that though I don't have those issues when using the lighter lures that I use with conventional tackle . My last combo is a Dobyn's 867 , Curado 301 reel spooled with 25 lb Floro . I like to throw the largest baits in my line-up which include lures like the 8" Spro BBZ and Deps 250 slide swimmer. 4 to 7 ozs seems to be the sweet spot . Dobyns claims you can throw baits up to 16 ozs with this rod but I am highly skeptical it can comfortably cast baits anywhere close to it's upper range . That said it is one sweet rod for heavier treble hook lures and I highly recommend it . I realize that you are not likely to purchase multiple combo's , that said a Dobyns 795 will handle a lot of the medium sized swimbaits . Just choose the line and reel according to the type of baits you like to throw and line preference . Good luck and welcome to the dark side of fishing big baits
  6. For you buzzbait fans try the Eco Pro Tungsten http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Eco_Pro_Tungsten_War_Cry_Buzzbaits/descpage-EPWC.html
  7. To me the best waking crank that I have ever used was the one Xcalibur discontinued a few years back . Very loud and unlike others I've tried it doesn't blow out at higher speed retrieves . Explosive strikes when fishing shallow grass .
  8. I prefer the S waver over the Ganteral, that said I find that the toothy critters really like the Ganteral .
  9. Here is a good option, it's a title shot jighead .... https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwiz05KHoO7VAhUEB2kKHQ0mCJ4YABACGgJpcQ&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESEeD2Q_aLh3B84442zH7q4OBK&sig=AOD64_35a9kOZz9kCfyL6px3idnBQpC7uQ&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwjTq4yHoO7VAhUI7oMKHWZPDogQvhcILw&adurl=
  10. The 8" Spro BBZ swimbait , River to Sea S Waver 200 and a 9" MS Slammer are some of the better swimbaits that carry a moderate for swimbaits price tag .
  11. Nice review, looking forward to trying them .
  12. Kicker the Xraps and especially the Shadow Raps are legit baits. The Shadow Rap is one of the very best jerkbaits out there in my opinion .
  13. I have buoyant soft plastic baits I would rather use if I'm going to fish it like a shaky head rig, I would also use a different jighead. Years before the " Ned rig " I have fished a variety of small soft plastics on 1/16 oz jigheads with a small hook including 3" Senkos. 90 percent of the fish that I catch are when the bait is falling through the strike zone. I feel confident that I can catch fish in similar if not better numbers than the Ned rig Zman fisherman . I like the Senko because it's heavy for a small bait so I can cast it far which is critical in the lakes I fish which usually have very clear water . Other baits that works very well on a 1/16 oz soft plastic is a R.I. Smallie Beaver , 3" Yamamoto grubs, Zoom finesse worms and the list goes on . Small soft plastics on jigheads catch a lot of fish including the Zman, that said I see nothing special about it .
  14. The Strike King Perfect Plastic Blade Minnow has worked well for me.
  15. That was the one I was thinking about trying, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
  16. I have no doubt that they will catch a few fish, that said I'm curious if the electronic chirping sounds have made a difference in the overall catch rate and if there are any noteworthy baits in their line-up that have performed well for you . I've dabbled with them a little but I was not overly impressed with the couple of baits that I tried, however I don't think I've put in enough time with their baits for a fair evaluation.
  17. My favorite way to catch them is with swimbaits or jigs .
  18. I have not fished them but the Powerbait line is a proven performer . The bait looks like a fish catcher, worth a try at 75 cents .
  19. I use snaps for crankbait fishing , the BPS saltwater snap is a little stronger and so far it's never cost me a fish .
  20. What he said
  21. The difference is that the Trash fish is made with a softer plastic that will still have movement retrieving it slower or when it's falling as you are waiting for the bait to reach the desired depth after you cast it . The sick fish will work fairly well if you retrieve it faster and might have some action on the fall with a heavy jighead , that said you can try boiling the tail to improve the action if you want to be able to fish it slower .
  22. Primus replied to Ghostshad's topic in Fishing Tackle
That is a terrific bait on the 5/8 mag shakey head that they have . The Big Bite Bait Kreit tail is my favorite ribbon tail , I usually fish it on a T-rig with a 3/8 or 1/2 oz sinker .
  23. Bummed that I missed out on the Weedless Shad's as they are one of my favorite baits, I also like weedless Hudd 68's from the Hudd Line-up .
  24. Night time is a great time for large swimbaits and I'm ok with trebles because I scoop them up with a net . Some of my faorite's would be a MS Slammer, the Crankdown Slammer, Matt's Hardgill and a Pat's Perch . Another bait that I like is the Strike King Magnum 8.0 squarebill , works good throwing it over deep water at suspended fish .
  25. Cool idea, thanks for sharing
