  1. I don't use bow or stern liens either but the rack on my jeep also has three bars so really only about 2' on the front and back at the most are hanging off the bars. My rule of thumb is if more than a third of the boat is hanging off either end then use the bow & stern tie downs. On my old subaru i used them because i could feel the boat moving and i didn't really trust the factory rack system on there.
  2. If you are looking for something fun to catch bass and sunnies on i would go with a 5 weight. It will give you a good fight for bass and still do ok for most bass too. I would also agree that the majority of your budget should be spent on the rod and line with a minimal amount spent on the reel. I usually think a good rule of thumb is about 60% rod, 30% line and 10% reel. Also, look at sierra trading post.com as they always have good deals on high quality fly fishing gear.
  3. Time out there will help but the advice given is right on. Being in a kayak you are at a disadvantage in certain situations for sure but you learn to use them to your advantage. Depending on the nature of the places you fish, I have found that a stakeout pole is the best investment I have bought for my kayak. It allows me to hold position in water up to about 5' deep and doesn't take up much space in the kayak either. I want to get an 8 or 10' one though as that will open up more areas I can use it. As far as paddle management goes I just set it across my lap and never had any issues. I do have a raised seat though which does make this a little more manageable in my opinion. When i had my first kayak with a more traditional height seat on the floor of the kayak, keeping the paddle under control was a little more problematic.
  4. yup, definitely a smallie and a nice catch for sure
  5. Yeah it is pretty high up, not as high as a canoe but way higher than a normal kayak seat. If you have a Ride 115, why not just buy a high seat? save you some cash
  6. Bungee cords are not going to hold anything down in the case they are needed. If you can, go through the handles.
  7. I was looking for a boat that was self draining and a bit faster as i have a few lakes where a longer paddle is necessary. I also want a raised seat position with a regular seat and not the captain's perch bleacher style seat as it doesn't offer the support i like and need given I have a bad back. All that being said, it is an outstanding boat and if i didn't want the self draining feature i wouldn't have sold it.
  8. i am not sure why you are blaming the bait when the probability of you being the issue is just as high. Maybe it was as subtle take and you set the hook late and as the bass was spitting it out you managed to foul hook them
  9. well he has played 4 years, made two pro bowls and only missed two games and won a playoff game last season so he is doing ok for a 4th year QB. And as much as people don't want to admit it, the pure pocket passer, while still being a big part of football is slowly being modified to fit more modern style of offenses. Sure, they still will put up points and do well but they are not required to win as can be seen by the seahawks super bowl.
  10. who would you replace him with? that is the problem with the paying of NFL QB. I would bet there are 20 teams who would like to have a guy like Cam Newton on their team. The past few seasons he has done pretty well and looks to have turned a corner as far as his play goes. I like the guy and hope he does well, just not against my team
  11. gotcha, i saw flights for around 200 round trip but i know those things change quickly, I was also under the impression that you did not want a vehicle and were going solely with metro transportation. Have fun and drive safe and enjoy the DC traffic, it is some of if not the worst in the country but being familiar with Chicago traffic, I am sure you will be fine lol
  12. I haven't found a particular bait to be more effective than another for targeting bowfin. The baits i have caught them on range from Spinner baits, cranks, wake baits and even stick worms. My thought is if you get it in the right spot they get mad and hit it. I have had them follow a biat all the way to my boat and just sit there and watch me and any bait i drop in the water for a long time.
  13. I would find a new hobby.....but i will play along. Moccasin blue super fluke.
  14. Polygraph examinations are par for the course as far as the rules are concerned in the tournament rules I have read. My ex father in law was a polygraph examiner for the Navy and I asked him about the accuracy and he said that they are accurate and in his 20+ years administering them for the navy, there were less than 3 that were not accurate based on other evidence. I am sure it has been said on here already but anytime you add in money to a competition, there will be people cheating. Just look at the Cheatriots.....
  15. I am not real familiar with the areas that are safe or not but i have left my vehicle in the metro parking lot over a weekend before and had no issues. You also might want to look into flights from Chicago to DC as i would bet they are probably pretty comparable or even cheaper than what you would pay to drive not to mention a whole lot less time.
  16. This is a classic series where there is a team with an obvious superstar and another team that while it has the reigning MVP, they aren't star studded or playoff tested really. Styles make for good series and i think this one will fit the bill. If the cavs win this one, I think that it should silence a lot of critics about lebron and his lack of killer instinct. In this playoff run he has carried this team further than just about anyone would have thought.
  17. Well for the first time in at least 5 years I am kayakless....feels weird to look out back and not see my commander on the storage rack....i am guessing I will be purchasing this weekend though and breaking it in the same day..... And as far as the weight is concerned, I do think the ATAK is heavy but my old Coosa was a pig to carry even though it isn't listed as being that heavy the first year of the boat i had carried a lot heavier due to the bad balance points where the handles were. Anyways, once i pick up a boat i will be sure to post up some pics
  18. according to Appomattox river company's website, they have some colors of the ATAK in stock and since they have a store about 20 minutes from me, I hope they have one in that i want. They do have the color I want in stock according to their website so I just might be picking up a new kayak this weekend I will be selling my commander 120 tonight so i will have some cash burning a hole in my pocket....
  19. i haven't had any of those in a while but i may just have to pick some up now. i have been on a dogfish 60 minute IPA kick here lately.
  20. i am a big fan of stradics but to be fair, I haven't fished many other high end spinning reels because after finding the stradic i really didn't see the need to try others
  21. Nice fish!! I hope i can get into something remotely close to that size when i go down to the Outer Banks in about a month
  22. it is definitely shady and since this is a SPRO tournament and a SPRO employee was involved in providing the waypoints, at a minimum, if i owned SPRO, that guy would be fired for unethical behavior that impacts the competitiveness and spirit of the event. I also find it very hard to believe that they didn't use the waypoints, maybe not day of the tournament but i am sure they review them to use from memory at a later time.
  23. http://www.cheatsheet.com/automobiles/the-15-most-american-automobiles-of-2014.html/?a=viewall for those who are interested....
  24. Shimano stradic of any variety and in the 2500 size.
  25. i have tried a few types, stren, power pro, power pro super slick, suffix 832 and recently seagar kanzen. Out of those the only ones i didn't like were the stren and the suffix. I like the power pro super slick a lot more than the original and i picked up the seagar chanson this past weekend because they were out of the super slick and so far i am impressed with it on my spinning set up. I alms tried the bass pro house brand braid but the price wasn't as much of a difference to warrant me trying it.
