  1. Heres an interesting paragraph from a science web site . Specific frequencies of light get absorbed by water at different depths. Water act like a selective filter. Red, which has the longest wavelength of the visible spectrum, gets absorbed first and can only penetrate around 5 meters before losing contrast. Blue light with a shorter wavelength can penetrate around 60 meters before the same effect occurs. This is due to the fact that water is much more dense than air. This means that the molecules are much closer together and the water molecules actually absorb the energy from the electromagnetic wave and convert that energy to heat. Blue light, having more energy, takes the longest to diminish and therefor travels the furthest underwater. Different depths of the ocean have specific temperatures due to this selective "solar heating". Interesting fact: infrared light (cannot see and comes before red in the spectrum) can barely penetrate 1mm of water.) permalink embed Red is a very popular color in cold muddy water because it catches fish . Bass move shallow in cold muddy water and red is not as effected as much as the other colors because of its longer wave lengths . Coincidence .?
  2. 8 foot of visibility from above ?
  3. I got started fishing as a toddler and cut my teeth on panfish and bulheads . When I was old enough to venture out on my own I would go to the Mississippi river and fish all day for whatever the river would give up . So I already had a lot of angling experience before I got heavy into Bass fishing . I joined a Bass club as at eighteen and learned how to beat the banks with crankbaits and spinnerbaits . I didnt catch much in those days . A year later I got my own boat a 15 foot Skeeter ,then I started catching a lot of bass . The Texas rig worm was the turning point . Once I started tossing it into the snaggiest cover ,the bass came by the dozens . . Learn the T rig . It opens up everything . You will be able to fish it "everywhere". You will learn how to dissect cover and become a better fisherman no matter what lure you throw . Learn that skill then when you venture out to structure fishing you will be well prepared .
  4. Heres how light waves disappear under water . Not from a humans eye , or a basses eye its just the way light works .So in most waters greens and yellow light waves penetrate deepest . In gin clear water blues and purple penetrate deeper . Blue has long been associated as a good color choice for clear water and chartreuse for murky . There may be some science behind that . A white lure as Molay just mentioned in another thread can only reflect the light that is reaching it .
  5. When shad are all over the place unmolested , ignore them . Fish tight to cover or search out structure or change locations .. I ran into this yesterday and caught bass in laydowns on a small bluegill colored spinnerbait .

I fish stained water most of the time .and use both bright and more natural lures about fifty / fifty .
  7. Went yesterday expecting a hot bite .Water temp 69 degrees and cloudy with light winds , perfect .Took four rods and started out with crankbaits on three and a t-rigged worm on the other . Did not catch a single fish on a crank and only 2 from the worm . Managed about 25 fish total with 4 barely over 15 inches . Most came on a little 1/4 ounce ,single willow-leaf , home-made spinnerbait . . The fish were very tight in lay downs and accurate cast were needed in minuscule places . Make a good cast and bass were all over it .
  8. I wonder if they make a laser in pumpkin .
  9. Cousin and I were fishing Table Rock one fall in very clear water . Mike caught a crawfish with bright orange pincers , so we tied on brown jigs with a bright orange trailer and started catching fish . I would not have chose orange in that clear water until I saw it was not out of place at all . ,The clearer the water the brighter the fish . Some darters are brilliantly colored . I had some Orange throated Darters that I seined stocked in my aquarium . They were stunning. Orange , turquoise and other colors and they came out of gin clear water .
  10. . If I was wanting to match the pumpkinseed I would go with the fire tiger . Maybe it will be the right choice maybe not .
  11. I think they are all good for slow rolling like a spinnerbait on the bottom . The Red Eyed Shad shimmys when you kill it . Thats a good feature .. I dont know what you mean by a lot of surface area .
  12. I do well with crakbaits in the fall ,when the bass are aggressively hitting shad , dont know why you are having trouble . The Rapala Fat Rap in perch or gold foil work well for me . I also like the Luck E Strike RC's from Walmart , Bomber Model A is good too .
  13. The way I figure crankbait for depth trolling is two multiply the lures max depth x 2 . A Rapala Fat Rap is a good 5 to 6 foot bait for me so if I see fish at around 10 foot , it would be an option .
  14. I fish a shallow lake with irrigation ditches . Max depth 5 foot . The best fishing by far is the cover close to the max depth .
  15. Creatures Bass are likely to eat are not a solid color . So I never go with one color only . My jigs usually have a streak of another color and/or a different color trailer . Even when T rigging soft plastics . I have become a Spike It marker convert and often add a little different color to a solid bait .
  16. My worm rod use to be a 5'6" med hvy fiberglass Lews Speed Stick . I had no problem feeling light taps .Hook setting ,that was a different story . Reel down and cross their eyes , but hey , it worked . Caught thousands of bass on it .
  17. I have the same problem with a Spook . I can work it good , even walk it around stumps . The bass just miss it so much that I rarely use a walking bait .Maybe this fall I'll catch some biguns on it . Never say cant .
  18. have a Bass Baby with built in wheels , so I can launch it easily by myself .
  19. I eat six types of wild mushrooms . Took a hike today and found what I was looking for .Chicken of the Woods . World class eating here . Usually I saute them but I feel like frying them tonight .These guys are choice .
  20. Ok , pulling a loop out is not a backash , so I get them rarely ,once proper adjustments are made . Bad ones come when you hook something on the backcast , like your partner .
  21. One of the most useful bass fishing articles I ever read came sometime in the 80's by Rick Clunn in Bassmaster magazine . I would like to find it again . RC taught to view your tackle box as a tool box and your lures as tools . Pick the right tool for the job . So ask yourself what you want a lure to do in each situation you encounter . Sometimes you need extra weight , sometimes you need a crankbait that reaches 12 foot, extra flash , weedlessness..., Make sure there is a reason behind lure choice instead of just choosing something .
  22. That would make a good spinnerbait skirt too .I'll have to try to find the right material . I still make the Living rubber skirts but only have six colors ..
  23. I dont know if he took anybody but I know hes been back and there are several other people hunting it since . Connecting the dots I'd say he told others .
  24. I dont take friends to my good mushroom spots either .Theres a wooded valley where II have found over 100 old coins with a metal detector . I took a friend and guess what happened ?
  25. I hope to find out next week .The wind has kept me off the water all this week .
