  1. Mark the structure and cover instead of the fish. Theres a real good chance they are not bass . I've been fooled by channel cats a lot . Also big shad . I marked a bunch of fish one time , stated ripping a spoon through them. I could not get a bite. I was determined to catch one and started to violently rip the spoon and ended up snagging a great big shad .
  2. Dont be afraid to set the hook more than once. My initial hookset is forcefull [ unless its the first of the day and i'm often a little hesitant lol ] then I will set it again when I feel i'm in a good position to do so. I do it with both jigs and texas rigs .
  3. I Googled domestic mergansers and came up empty. The article I read states that only Mallards and Muscovy's are domesticated but anything can be hatched and raised on a farm .
  4. When I got into bass fishing seriously in the mid 70's I read as much as I could and watched all those television shows like Virgil Ward , Roland Martin , Bill Dance , Jimmy houston ... The jig and pork was always labeled as a cold water bait . In the summer plastic worms were the lures to use. My best friend and I were fishing in the same club tournament at the Lake of the Ozarks. It was summer time and I was fishing plastic worms around docks. I caught a lot of fish but only two keepers. My friend shows up to the weigh in with a limit of four lb plus bass and easily wins the tourney. We were fishing the same way in the same area but he was using a jig and pig . So much for jigs and pork being a cold water technique .
  5. I didnt know they were still made , havent seen any in so long . I Googled it and there they are .
  6. I think the jig n eel may have originated in the Ozarks. Virgil Ward use to use it a lot on the shows. Probably where I first saw it. If I remember correctly Bill Ward use to use pork eels as trailers on scorpion spinnerbaits .
  7. Who remembers the jig and Uncle Josh pork eel as a trailer? When I first got into bass fishing that was the hot combo . Then the pork frog got popular . I used the Uncle Josh Water dog also , it was a big fish lure . The first plastic's I used were the mister twister black double tails . Now all one hear about are short squat trailers that resemble crawdads . I still use worms for trailers occasionally to give the old jig and eel profile .
  8. If you catch 12 fish with a swim jig without eyes then how do you know you would not have caught 13 if it did have eyes. They cant hurt .
  9. I cant remember why I didnt fish it much. When I blow I can here the two blades hitting . Maybe they get stuck together .
  10. I t-rig them . Didnt know any better .
  11. I have a bunch of lures that need fishing . I'd loan them to you .
  12. When I hike to fish I usually carry a S&W 38. Always have a Leatherman. Usually a fixed blade , hatchet , machete or something just to play around with. A pocket knife of some sort . I might have a half dozen knives . Camera , 5 gallon bucket . I like to just hike somewhere get some lines in the water and play like a mountain man .
  13. I dont know the maker , maybe a homemade job. I dont even remember fishing it but I can tell its been used some. A buzzbait with a prop within a prop .
  14. The old rug pull . Hate it .
  15. Bomber mini wacker with a bit of weight clamped on the hook shank .
  16. I have never night fished for crappie but have an experience that I think were crappie. On an August night I was fishing for channel cats on a huge flat close to the river channel. I mean I was way out in the lake and catching lots of catsfish. I had bow lights on in both the stern and bow. All night long there were fish hitting topwater all around my boat , I think they were crappie hitting baitfish that were attracted to the lights .
  17. Sorry for the double negative .
  18. If the thermocline is clearly visible then does that not mean the lake hasnt turned over ?
  19. I used minnow traps a lot. Bad part is they were constantly getting swiped .Once I started covering them with rocks that stopped . I usually baited then with a slice of bread bit I think anything would work. Dry pet food works good .
  20. He would be beautiful in an aquarium. Ive been thinking about setting mine back up with a few sunfish in it. a couple of green sunfish and Pumpin seeds would be cool .
  21. Old school tackle box? I need a good way to keep spinners and buzzers . Never mind . I missed the picture .
  22. I try to be but it doesnt last. I have two dedicated crankbait boxes and crankbaits thrown in a night fishing box. One box holds cranks with the line ties on the bills [ med / deep divers ] and one box with line ties on the bodies . I often cant find a bait and its in the wrong box "How did my vintage green Deep Little N wind up in the topwater box ?"
  23. Black jig brown pork frog is a killer combo .
