  1. Ive used the 1/8th ounce bitsy bugs quite a bit. To aid in casting I mostly use half a Senko type worm as a trailer. Its a nice combination . A jig doesnt have to have a crawfish trailer .
  2. The Seagull pattern , I.m always noting where he gulls are .
  3. I would go with mono . That way you can change line cheaply after the inevitable backlash. Remember with baitcasting gear to let go earlier, like you are casting straight up in the air and use the thumb heavily . Eventually you will be able to cast with very little thumb .
  4. First big bass I caught in in my Avatar pic. Cane pole and worm. Been hooked ever since . Probably two maybe three lbs it may as well been an 8 lber .
  5. Heres my thinking and I may be completely wrong. Light doesnt go deeper than the thermocline. I use to have a light meter and this was always the case when I tested it. So after the turnover I dont fish deeper than where the thermocline was before , if the water is about the same clarity .
  6. Youre right. The surface water mixes with deeper water when the temps drop. Seems a little early to me especially for Texas but Ive never fished in T exas .
  7. Beginners , like in the topic title .
  8. " If I can't figure out a pattern after 3 to 4 hours, I call it a dud and go home to try again tomorrow. " 8 hours for me. 3 or 4 hours I'm still in elimination mode .
  9. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the message Lucky is conveying to noobs is not to let lady luck dictate if they are successful or not .
  10. I've used a lot of different ones. The baby bass and smallmouth patterns have produced well for me to . Fire Tiger is another .
  11. I have two in different sizes . Lurenet has them .
  12. Bomber Model A with silver flash insert. Very good producer .
  13. Now I have a new use for my potato gun .
  14. I feel the OP's original post is the best advice a new bass fisherman can get., not what lure is best .Whether they run with it or not is up to them .
  15. Heres those jigs I was referring to . I used Hales craw worms as trailers .
  16. On of the best fish catchers I ever used was by Hales . A lightweight finnesse jig with wire weedguard and tube like body. It worked so well that I am slightly surprised it didnt become a stalpe in everybodys tackle boxes.I still have a couple . I'll get a photo .
  17. Buzzbaits are my favorite . Bomber Long A Minnow is next .
  18. How can you buzz your beloved Larew salt craws? It wont create much of a commotion , just come straight in . I buzzed curl tail worms like the Gator tail and curl tail grubs .
  19. When fishing a big flat I am casting at a depth or baitfish my marker buoy.. , I still dont chuck and wind . There is a reason for every cast ..
  20. If the bass take the bait deep you will not lose many . If you're barely hooking them or face hooking them then you are close to having them figured out. Try to make changes so the bass will take it deeper . You may get it right maybe not. Different colors ,size, action ,retrieves... theres a lot of changes that can be made .
  21. Every angler should think about each cast ,each lure change... Even beginners , its the fastest way to learn . There will be lots of mistakes made but when things click they will have a better understanding .
  22. I slow roll 10 to 15 foot deep on points with heavy lures and a single willowleaf blade . It a good technique. Also a few decades back I use to do this with a black 1/2 ounce Blakemore Charlie Campbell spinnerbait that had a single large copper Colorado blade in stump fields around 5 to ten foot deep . I caught a lot of fish with it .
  23. When I lose a lot of fish on crankbaits I go rattleless and lures without a lot of action .
