  1. I really want to get a Powell Endurance 714 as a jig rod. Its a 7'1" heavy fast action rod. You want to get a stout rod for jig fishing to drive the hook. Heard nothing but good things about them for jigs in the 3/8 to around 3/4 oz range. It all depends on on how much you want to spend, the type of cover you're fishing, and what size jigs you want to use. Tell us these things and we can give you better suggestions
  2. A perch. Firetiger works great in dirty water
  3. Alberto for me too. If tied right, they won't break. Whenever I've had to break off, the leader breaks, and not the alberto knot.
  4. For me, I've tried using the same mono and it feels like I'm fishing with rubber bands. If you want to throw frogs and the occasional worm then I would use 50 lb braid with a 14 lb leader. If you are frogging in sparse cover then 40 lb braid
  5. Poor bass died, too. I saw that article on *** a couple days ago.
  6. I got the SS1 as my first baitcaster, but I wish I would've gone with a better reel like the Curado. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. If you buy the SS1 like I did, you'll want an upgrade after a couple months.
  7. I usually just do a wingspan of my arms and then cut that length to tie on
  8. I use leaders to save money on line. I'll use 40 lb braid with a filler spool of fluorocarbon as leader material because braid lasts a lot longer and is more maneagable. Also, leaders act as a shock absorber for braid. If you're fishing clear water with braid, then you might want to tie on a leader so the fish can't see the braid. Don't know if thats true or not, but its a confidence thing for me.
  9. People have so many rods because there are so many techniques in bass fishing, and some people like to have technique specific rods so they don't have to retie their knots. This would be convenient when fishing in a tournament. Also, some baits perform better on other rods. ex) crankbaits on rods with a parabolic bend so you give the fish more to work with If you can't afford more than 1 combo, then I would suggest you get the most versatile there could be. A 7' MH Fast with a 6.4:1 gear ratio for baitcasting. This can effectively fish texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits and more.
  10. For me personally, the Speed Spool was my first baitcasting reel, and it was really good, but I didn't want to spend a whole lot on a reel. If you can get the Curado I, go for it! You can find them for like $155 on auction sites if you look.
  11. On another note, the BuCoo with micro guides come with a lifetime warranty. The regular ones do not
  12. Just wondering, are these good choices if I do happen to get a kayak? http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=31609916&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792.32954906 or http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11279269&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792.32954906 I'm open to any other suggestions too. Sit on tops only. Also I'd like to keep it at 600 dollars or less. I'm going to try to buy new, so no used please.
  13. That's understandable. My parents already freaked out a bit when they saw me get hit in the face by a baseball, so I guess they don't want me to do anything dangerous.
  14. Thanks!! I'm not going to ask them again about a kayak, and I'm just going to save as much as I can to maybe acquire a better one in the future.
  15. Thank you. My dad doesn't fish, and he doesn't have time to. He works all the time, sadly. I got into it myself when I was younger. I already asked why and like I said, they think I'll only fish for another 2-3 years until I go to college or something. Like I said earlier, its not a big deal if I don't get one now, but I just got so excited after being able to finally get on the water that I just was thinking about getting my own instead of borrowing my friend's kayak.
  16. I doubt that they would get me one for Christmas. My birthday is in a week, maybe they might get me one? I don't know. They told me that you're only going to want to fish for like 2 years, then you'll never fish and use the kayak again. That's not true though. Oh well, I guess I may be stuck to just borrowing my friends yak and just carrying it down a mile or so.
  17. Sorry if this is the wrong section, I didn't know which one it would go in I went out fishing a local pond for the first time on a kayak. It was extremely fun. I've always fished from the shore my whole life and that's the first time I've ever been out ON the water. Unfortunately I asked my parents if I could get the same kayak I used today (it was a friends), and they said no. They cost 200 dollars retail but my friends say they got them for around 70 bucks brand new at a sports store. (just a normal sit in kayak, not a fishing one). Anyways, I make my own money by washing dishes, but they still won't let me get one. I am 15 by the way. Also, if I tried to tell them I wanted to get even a $200 dollar + kayak they would've definitely said no, so I don't want any suggestions for other kayaks. (unless there's an awesome deal or something). I don't understand why they won't let me get one. I make straight A's in school... but being of Asian descent that's kind of an expectation your parents have for you lol. Maybe they don't want an accident to happen? I've already told them that I'd wear a life vest. Still no. Well I'm going to try and convince them again, any thoughts? And if they say no, I guess I'm stuck roaming the banks or just borrowing my friend's kayak. I've found them online http://prntscr.com/434r15
  18. I rarely get skunked in the summer. If the bite isn't on, then I'll throw on a shakey head, which has always caught me fish, or a 1/4 oz jig
  19. Changed my mind again. May go with the Tournament Pro now. Does the TP handle shalllow cranks and 1/2 oz lipless cranks well or is the BB1 Pro a better choice. Usually I throw 1.5's, and I've read that the TP handles lighter lures better. Plus I want a reel that is palmable.
  20. Thanks for the input guys. Did a little more research and I think I'm going to go with a BB1 Pro.
  21. Just got my Powell Diesel 7ft Glass rod, but I don't know what reel to put on it. Using this for lipless cranks, jerkbaits, topwaters and such. Was looking at the gen 3 Revo SX, I saw them on auction site for around $130. Is this a good reel, or should I get a different one? Open to any suggestions. Price range 120-150
  22. 30 lb braid. When first spooling braid on I put it on super tight. After I catch a fish I'll just cast out lightly if I have any problems with it digging.
  23. Lew's Tournament Pro. 150 ish on auction site Edit: If you want to use braid then I think the BB1 Pro would work better. You can get those for 150 ish aswell.
  24. I picked one up too! Will be throwing the same thing as you, 1/2 oz lipless cranks, I think it'll be perfect for them.
