That's what i was thinking too. I might use this for skipping docks and laydowns though and I've heard people say you want the fastest reel you can get to pull the fish out from under the cover before they wrap you up in something.

What do people think of the torque on the 7.4:1 vs. the 8.5:1? I know some reels it's a trade-off between torque and speed when you get into the higher gear ratios.

Okay, the Curado DC is one of the new reels I'm looking at for this year (along with the Tatula SV and Smoke S3) but it kind of worries me that it only has an 11lb. drag...why does it worry me, I don't know. It's not like where I live we have 11lb. bass, the heaviest I've heard of is around 9lbs. but generally speaking is 11lbs. of drag enough? I mean if you're going to haul a big girl out of thick pads and slop is it enough? If it is I'm definitely looking hard at it but of the 3 reels I'm considering it has the least amount of drag so I was just wondering.

Just ask to speak to the manager. Explain that this rod has been there for years, nobody has bought it and would he sell it to you for 50% off (or whatever...maybe you offer a certain price). The worst he can do is say no but more than likely he'll cut a deal just to be rid of the rod. Worth a shot.

I just got a 6'6" MH/F spinning rod for $11 at mine.

That's okay, all of our lakes and ponds are still ice covered and I'm sure ice-out won't be for at least another month!

Have you or would you buy a reel from an eBay seller that has zero feedback? There's a Shimano Curado DC on eBay right now for $200, the seller is new since December 2018 and has zero feedback despite apparently selling 16 of these reels already. My spidey-sense is tingling on this one...great deal for sure but you know the old adage about if something looks too good to be true. I know that eBay and/or Paypal would cover me if something went wrong but it's such a hassle.

Theoretically you can skip with any reel in any ratio but are there some reels that are more forgiving for beginners to skipping?

Check out the Dobyn's Colt series of rods. They are made for budget anglers who want good quality components but can't afford top (or even mid-range_ dollar rods). For $80 shipped you're getting a really nice rod!

It can be anything, overhanging tree limbs/brush...doesn't have to be docks but what gear ration reel (casting or spinning) do you use and why? I've seen some videos online but just trying to get a general consensus of what my fellow anglers here at BR use.

I don't know, I think the logo looks kinda' sweet myself. Some people don't like flashy and prefer a more simplistic approach but to each their own :).

Well, I made the trek to the nearest BPS (2 hr. 15 minute drive) yesterday and checked out some of the reels. First off I got to check out the Shimano SLX. Let me say I'm impressed. For $99 that is one sweet little reel which brings me to the most impressive aspect...it's size. When I say sweet "little" reel It's no joke, that is one compact and dare I say tiny reel...I can easily palm it and I have average to small hands. It just looks and feels like a quality reel, nothing about it feels cheap IMO. Next reel I looked at was the Daiwa Tatula SV. Very impressive reel...it just looks sexy and feels very smooth and solid. By comparison to the SLX the SV is a giant. I would definitely have a much harder time palming that than the SLX but I could still do it. The next reel was the Curado DC. Very nice looking reel...very refined looking, not as sexy as the SV but still sleek and polished leaving no doubt that it's pure quality, not quite as large as the SV but definitely bigger than the SLX. The last reel I looked at was the Quantum Smoke S3 KVD Edition. That is one nice looking reel! Very sharp features with the red/black color scheme...it just looks really nice! Probably size-wise it's around the same as the Curado. I was impressed by the deep spool it has...that Smoke can hold a lot of line and with a 25lb. drag that would be a perfect big swim bait reel. The last bit of info I learned was directly from a knowledageabl BPS fishing staff, that the BPS Pro Qualifier is made of an Abu Garcia base with Abu brakes, bearings, level wind etc. Now some people here probably already new that so that's not the most interesting tidbit, what is more interesting than that is this years Pro Qualifiers are the last based on an Abu reel. With their acquisition of Cabelas the next generation of Pro Qualifiers will be made by Daiwa (Daiwa of course makes all of the Cabelas house reels). So, if you have an affinity for Abu reels and like the Pro Qualifier as it's currently constructed I would advise you to grab one of this years models because next year they'll be quite different!

I just called eBay and the person I spoke to said they are never given advance notice of when those coupon codes are going to drop until the day they do but she did assure me that eBay is still going to generate those coupons this year so just keep checking every day. Keeping my fingers crossed...last year they had one around Spring time so hopefully in another month they'll have another one!!!

I mean that's just a partial interest, just wondering if the DC tech is worth the extra bucks. I do like BOTH Shimano and Daiwa...I already have a Curado I and a Tatula CT Type-R. Another thing that appeals to me is not having to adjust the tension knob every time you switch baits, not a big deal but still...a pain in the butt that if not necessary would be a wonderful thing :).

The thing is some of the hype around the DC is you could cast it into a wall and the thing won't backlash. They want you to believe that this would make it one of the best choices ever for skipping lures because it's almost impossible to backlash.

I have a coupon code i was given for a previous incident at Academy Sports. I was thinking how either of these reels would be good for skipping which is something I don't know how to do but would like to learn and have been told getting a proper skipping reel is essential to success.

Hi all, As the title of the post suggests, which reel is the better bang for the buck? I can get the Daiwa for about $170 and the Curado for about $190. Knowing this which one would you pick and why? Is the DC tech worth the extra $20? Anybody own both of these reels and can give me an honest, non-biased opinion?
