Sheriff Joe At IT Again.
Sounds like a no nonsense guy. I've always thought it was ridiculous that inmates get cable tv. Some people who haven't committed crimes don't even get cable, let alone have it paid for by the taxpayers... Also, why do inmates at so many prisons get weight sets? Doesn't that just allow inmates to get strong enough to become more dangerous? Aren't weights capable of being used as weapons? I think exercise is fine, but make them do sit ups or push ups, don't give them weights so they can become excessively strong to a point where they can more easily injure other prisoners and guards...

We Need to Block the Sun
Sorry to hear that, Sam. I never knew that melanoma would do something like that. I used to never wear sunscreen because I never burn. I have naturally dark skin and the worst that ever happens is my skin turns red but then the next day it is brown. I don't know if that means I'm less susceptible to skin cancer, but recently I started realizing that later in my life I might pay for all my sun exposure, even if it isn't burning me. So now I use sunscreen when I am out for long periods of time.

Two Choices
having worked with many kids with disabilities, some of them cannot achieve physical accomplishments that they are cognitively aware of, and that is frustrating and depressing, especially when they see their peers accomplishing those things. A little help can go a long way in making their lives a little less difficult (for the parents and the kids). Even if it wasn't for real, it was to the kid, and that's all that matters.

Top Water Baits
Great advice, SuskyDude. For river smallies, my favorites are spooks and prop baits. Remember that in many areas, smallmouth are more likely to hit topwaters in the daytime than largemouth. I have caught lots of smallies in small, fairly shallow rivers in the middle of a summer day.

Potomac
I don't know about fishing the Virginia side of great falls, it's too steep and rocky and fast flowing so I only went there once. The MD side has some good spots though, I went fishing there last summer but I don't know if they changed the rules or not. The banks get steep in some areas, but not like the Rapp. The Rapp (at least where I've been) is just eroded dirt about 10 ft above the water, the Potomac has some spots where it is just rock cliff faces. I remember I went to one park and could barely find a way down to the water to fish because most of the land there was too steep to walk down to the bank and it was probably 50 feet high. Putting in parks should show most of them. Points of interest are Riverbend Park (best for wading and bank fishing IMO), Algonkian Regional Park (they have a boat launch and the water is less rocky so you could probably launch there) and the Dranesville District Park which is also called Scott's Run (which is actually below Great Falls, just west of 495 on Georgetown Pike. There are other, smaller parks but I haven't really explored them very well, mostly because they involve a lot more hiking. Riverbend is not too bad off a hike, more like a walk on a trail. Algonkian has a launch and parking lot so there isn't much walking. Dranesville has quite a hike from the parking lot to the water that includes a very steep hill that is tough with a tackle bag.

Potomac
Jay, you wouldn't be launching in the upper potomac unless you have a canoe, kayak, small jon, or something like that. Their are loads of rocks and obstacles. I usually just bank fish or wade a little bit. It's not the best for wading because it's a little gross sometimes and its very rocky, but there are some pretty nice spots. Take a look at google maps and look at parks along the river. I like Riverbend Park. I may try to wade there when the water warms up a little. On google maps, use the satellite view to try to find a park that has lots of rocks in the water. Most of the smallmouth are above Great Falls, which isn't tidal, so they are pretty typical of smallmouth as far as I have seen. Most of these places are off of Georgetown Pike which is a fun drive because it is so curvy, but be careful not to crap your pants when you see all the giant houses out there. Let me know if you need any directions, advice, or suggestions. I am by no means an expert at fishing the upper Potomac but I know of a few spots. Also remember, the

Potomac
does anyone besides me fish the Potomac above the fall line? You can get some pretty nice smallies at a few parks west of Great Falls and from the MD side of Great Falls.

Nova Bedding Bluegill
I saw that the other day. THey were going absolutely nuts, chasing each other, baitfish, and bugs around. I'd never seen it before

Rick Ankiel
Babe Ruth was a pitcher! at least for a while. I saw the plays on Sportscenter's top 10 of the day. As a former outfielder, I really love quality throws and diving catches especially. I hope the steroid allegations aren't true, he is an inspiring story.

Isn't that their choice? I agree, it works both ways, if you are told private information, common courtesy would suggest that you reciprocate. Just like you gave me info about that pond and I offered my own info. That's the way it SHOULD work. BUT if you tell someone in confidence, make sure that you make it clear that you want it secret. If someone just makes a general public post about a place, you can't necessarily expect return information. Also, people don't have to give return information, they should, but they don't have to--and in return, you can refuse to give them any more information, that's up to you.

Potomac
I don't know, that's why I thought you should check. VA territory usually ends at the water line, if you are fishing from shore, it should be ok but if you launch a boat, it might be different.
-
Potomac
I don't know, but make sure you check the fishing regulations. I know Maryland has reciprocal licenses with VA for the potomac, but that water is DC, not VA or MD. You might want to check what the rules about that are, just in case.

Off work in Nova
man, I wish you were going out later, Jay. I have some stuff to do this morning but I'm planning on going out in the early afternoon/evening.

Red Line - Opinion
The difference between red hooks and red line is that the line is translucent. Light passes through the line, it does not pass through hooks, it reflects back off of them. I have never used red line mainly because I really haven't seen any red translucent (not braided) line from a quality brand (although to be fair, it's not something I normally look for). My thoughts are, if it's crappy line, I don't care what color it is, I'm not buying it. Now if I could find some Yo-Zuri in red, I MIGHT try that.

So what's the deal with Yo-Zuri Hybrid?
It's limp, it doesn't coil very much, and it's very strong. I use it on my spinning gear for any soft plastics. It would be good at other applications as well. For spinning, I would try #6. I haven't used it on my baitcaster yet.

Diawa Samurai rod?
when I worked at dick's we sold the Daiwa Samurai combo. It was one of the lower end combos. The reel wasn't what can be expected of a reel in that price range, I never really looked much at the rod. I would assume it would be the same story as the reel, but I could be wrong.

Anyone fished Buggs Island lately?
I don't have any tips, but I wish you good luck in your tournaments!
