I have spent hours throwing spinnerbaits, the only fish I have caught is a 8 lb. catfish (with witness). :-/ :-/ :-/ I have them in my tacklebox, but they stay there... When it comes to spinnerbaits, I feel the same way Fluke does..... that is why he got them on his last challenge. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Avid, I used to wrap a colored cord on my rods when I used to build them. It was like sisal rope in 1/8 in... could get in like natural, blue, red, etc....... I loved the stuff, especially for my big fish rods, like salmon and sturgeon.. gave you a better grip and was bigger in diameter..... looked better also in my opinion..

Trust me, I have every intention of learning that lake!!!!!!! I will not give up until I do.... guess I am stubborn that way.... will not let it get the best of me, even when I get upset with myself for not catching fish out of there.... sooner or later, I will be posting hawgs out of that lake..... I may be 80 yrs old, ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D but it will happen

Fluke, That day you and I went out? That was extemely slow fishing compared to how my buddy fishes.... Maybe I fish to slow.. but then I primarily am trying to fish plastics and jigs, and some chatterbaits..... I still have no confidence in rat l traps or spinnerbaits... can not for the life of me catch fish with them.... But then, Varner has become my nemisis lake, maybe because it is so close to me, and I can not figure it out.... Randall, thanks for the advice. And soon you will be getting a call from me to book a trip,, the bait monkey is still dead until then ;D.

Heck, he will even admit (off the water of course) that he probably should slow down,, however, he never puts it to practice.... : : : : I have taken him out in my boat and we both caught fish that day..... but he still wont learn,,, maybe it is the fact he is hyper or ???????? Who knows,, it will probably be a couple of more weeks till my boat is ready for the water again, but I will drag him out once it is done,,"to have him help me test drive it" then maybe I will go throw a drop shot or something and make him slow down, ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am the type of fisherman, that will exhaust an area before I move on..... If I am working a jig or plastic slow,,,, I want to be able work it as slow as neccessary to catch fish... I may work an area for 45 min, before I slide down the bank to another spot.... I hunt the same way,, yes, I may cover a lot of ground hunting, but is very slowly, 2 or 3 steps at a time, then stop and watch and listen.... When you grow up hunting the thick brushy Pacific Northwest, you have to hunt that way or else you will walk right past a deer or elk... and they will stand there and let you walk by then move on in the other direction... My thinking is this,, fishing is nothing more than hunting on/under the water.... if you are blasting thru an area, you may just miss that one you are looking for.....

I guess to me, it is the fact, he complains about not catching a lot of fish or a lot of big fish... however, he knows what needs to be done to increase his chances to catch these fish he is looking for, but will not do it... It would be like a guy has a broken arm, knows what needs to be done to get it fixed, but refuses to do it.. :o :o :o :o :o I know it boils down to ea. individual person about how the LIKE to fish, but is that not what versatility is all about..... to fish a way you may not be the most comfortable with, but if you get results, you become more comfortable.....???????????????

But, we are talking apples and oranges for a lot us.... I am working on a jon boat that will probably never see a gas motor. I fish electric only lakes or lakes that only allow 10 hp motors. As for rivetted boats. If all your gonna do is high speed running then yes, the rivets work loose getting bounced on the waves, however, for us jon boat TM only fishermen, that is not an issue. We also do not have to consider getting up on plane or how it is gonna corner, any of that, so the weight other than slowing us some with our Tms actually helps us out, by making the boat sit a little deeper in the water and makes us a bit more stable. And again, it may boil down to just price..... aluminum is a heck of a lot more expensive than wood. For me, that is the main stopper right there. My budget for working on my boat is very limited. So, you do with what you can afford. IF I could afford to have someone do an all aluminum job for me, ,,, I would, but I can not, so I use the wood... and like LBH said, the carpet will wear out before the wood rots anyway. just my 0.02 worth.

OK, here is a scenario for ya...... I have been out with a buddy a couple of times lately(in his boat, since I am converting mine)..... he is the run and gun type fisherman, but always complains about not catching a lot of fish ...... With the colder weather, he still will not leave that @#$%%$#@$#@ trolling motor off, and just fish a spot for 20 - 30 min.... even fishing plastics, I can cast out and 2 min. later, I am trolling my plastic, ;D :-/ I have tried numerous times to get him to slow down and just fish a spot, (he wont listen) Now, he does hang a hawg once in a while, 10.5 lbs is his PB. But his average per trip is down around 2-3 fish a trip both fishermen included. We are talking Lake Varner here guys, where Randall hangs all those hawgs. I see Randall out on the lake, he sits on a spot till he wears it out. My buddy completely disagrees with the tactic, he wants to cover the entire lake in one outing................(even though he sees the results from Randall's posts...... I guess I am frustrated, this guy is a good fisherman, but he is not reading the situation right and keeps fishing like it is late spring or early fall still. Any ideas????????????? other than smacking him up side the head with a bat, and throwing him overboard (although he does have a real nice new G3 : )

Superstitions are crazy. Just because I hook the boat up a certain way every time. Just because I refuse to leave unless I have my camo hat. Just because I hang my lucky rabbits foot off the bow of the boat. Just because I do a chant, and make an offering to the fish gods before and after I am done fishing. LBH, Lots of fluids, rest and a hot toddy every 4 hrs. Has worked for my family since I was 6 yrs old.. or so... (mom would not give us a hot toddy till we were that old I guess.) :o

Again, the cure for this is to get as many kids out fishing and hunting as possible. They are the sportsmen and women of tomorrow. Show them how to have clean safe fun, catching fish, stalking a buck, etc..... and they will continue this tradition. The other thing is to exercise your voting rights,, this means paying attention and writing congress people if neccessary. jmho

OK, one more question, then hopefully I am actually building this weekend. On the thickness of plywood. I have a 3/4" thick lip on the seats, (LBH understands) Now, if I buy 3/4 ply and carpet it, is it not going to end up being like 7/8 " thick????? So do I need to buy 5/8 ply so that after it is seald and carpet wrapped, it is actually 3/4"??????????????????? Man, did I just confuse myself???? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :-/ :-/

A few years ago, members of ALF (animal liberation front) openly supported by PETA, broke into a mink farm in Oregon. They released all the caged raised mink to the outside, where it was snowing, needless to say 90% of the mink froze to death, and the rest were killed by coyotes, neighbors dogs, etc..... but it was worth it to them because they were being abused... :o :o :o :o These people need to get a grip on reality. I had one member actually tell me that the whitetail deer would not starve to death if we quit hunting them... ummmmmmm ok, how about in Pennsylvania where more deer are killed on average by cars than hunters, and there is still a population problem.......... I have a salute for PETA members,,,, and it is very similar to Michael Vicks salute last Sunday.... The only way to beat them is to educate the kids.... because PETA preys on kids, like they are candy.

I used to have a golden retriever that went with me in my boat fishing out west. Didnt matter if it was for trout, salmon, steelhead, whatever. Bear, layed in the bottom of the boat on a cushion, occassionaly would get up and walk over to investigate what I was doing, then go back and lay down. Now, when a flopping 40 lb. salmon came in the boat he would get a little excited, but it was manageable. It is how the dog is trained. If the dog is trained properly then it will be no problem. If not, you will have your hands full... at least you do not have to worry about salmon poisoning if they grab a fish.. unless you are going salmon fishing that is...

If any private pond fish should not be allowed into the record books, then all you whitetail hunters better not be crying when they do not put your trophy buck in the record book because it was killed on private property that feeds and promotes huge bucks. Same song different verse in my opinion. You can not have it both ways.

without the above mentioned topo map of the lake, I would be hitting all the points and islands you see in the map,docks, any stump patches, etc..., and fish it slow, unless the bite says otherwise.... I would probably use a jig or maybe a rattle trap or chatterbait.
