We went fishing south of PV this past weekend. First day was a skunk. I spent that night trying to catch squid for bait and got skunked again. The next morning I decided to fish for roosterfish on along the beach, to get rid of the skunk. We landed 35 roosterfish and a bunch of Jacks in the morning all released. Left at noon for the tuna grounds. Landed two nice blue marlin trolling lures on the way out, with the biggest around 400 lbs both successful releases. Spent the night trying to get squid for another skunk. Fished a bank for tuna the next day with no success. We didn't fill the freezer, but had some great catch and release fishing.

Have you ever counted your lures?
I don't need to count them. I know I have way more than I need, and far less than I want.

What do you think about eating bass?
I like to eat bass, but I don't like to keep them fresh, clean or cook them. I release my bass because I am lazy, and tell everybody it is because I am a conservationist.

Mexico Cruise Fishing Trip
Toro is the same as a Jack Crevalle in the states. Toro is Spanish for bull. They are called El Toro ( The Bull) because of how hard they fight. Fun to catch but not good to eat.

How to choose style and rigging method of plastics?
I let my friend the Bait Monkey all of my soft plastics and terminal tackle. He makes sure I have everything I might need. I may not know how to fish a particular soft plastic, but I guarantee I will have it. If I fail to catch a bass on a certain bait, he is nice enough to recommend one I should buy that will work next time. If I get overwhelmed and can't decide which soft plastic to buy, I throw a spinnerbait.

Do you adjust your hookset for different line types?
I swing for the fences regardless of line or technique, even when I know I should bunt. I strike out way more than I should, but it sure feels good to hit a home run once in awhile.

Would you claim a state/world record if it ment blowing up your local lake/river spot?
A state record would go back in the water after a quick picture. I don't even know what my state record is. If I catch the world record, I'm going to brag about it and beg for sponsorship dollars, more than a politician at election time

My first Cow tuna( yellowfin over 200 lbs. ) of 2026. The trip started slow. We found the tuna right away. The tuna were busting all over the surface, but we couldn't get them to bite our live bait or lures. We spent all night the first night trying to get squid for bait. Dolphins would show up as soon as we turned on the lights, chasing the squid away. The next day we gave up on the tuna, and trolled for marlin and Landed one nice striped marlin. That night we were up all night trying to catch squid again. We managed to catch a few squid, and went after the tuna on the last day. We landed a small 50 pound tuna, on the first squid suspended under a helium balloon, and landed this cow a few minuets later on a squid under a kite. We spent the remainder of the day driving home, and watching football. ( Go Seahawks). I have never experienced such difficulty catching squid at night, and have never seen a time when squid were such an important bait. I guess that's fishing.

Planning a trip for 2027
PM me if you want information about fishing in Alaska. I lived and guided there for over 20 years all over the state. The options are truly unlimited. Depending on your expectations, price is not always a determining factor. Fly out lodges, can be unbelievable experiences, but a tent camp on a particular river can be better fishing if variety is not what you are looking for. Saltwater fishing in Southeast Alaska can be inexpensive, and equivalent to going to the fish market the bite is good. If you want to fly fish, Bristol Bay freshwater is the place. So many options. You must decide what your budget is, and the type of fishing you want to do, then you will at least be able to start your research.

Lake Fishing Center
Thanks. That is the place. After looking at the lures, I looked at the line, and reels. Metaniums for $100 Seaguar fluorocarbon for $10 complete scam. The Bait Monkey is in the corner crying right now. I thought he was going to hyperventilate when we first saw the price of the Rico's. My wife looked over at me and asked if I was alright when I first clicked on to the site. I guess the old rule, is always the same. If it is too good to be true it isn't.

Lake Fishing Center
Has anyone ordered from Lake Fishing Center. I have never heard of them before. I was surfing the web. looking for peoples opinion about the Lobina Rico popper compared to cheaper poppers and this site popped up. They are selling Labino Rico's for $7.50, I was suspicions about the price, then noticed Pop Max were only $6.50. I started looking at other baits and saw 6th Sense Crankbaits for $3.95. These prices are too good to be true. Does anyone have any experience with this company? I don't want to order a Pop Max and find out it is a cheap knockoff.

If you suddenly flipped how you catch fish, how do you think you'd do?
I would like to flip from daydreaming about bass fishing every day, and going fishing only when time allows, to someone who bass fishes everyday and daydreams about work, only when time allows.

Split or full grip
I prefer full cork grips, but I currently have all foam split grips. The reason is the rods I have either only came in split grip, or were far cheaper that way. If expense is no concerne, I would have all cork full grips. Expense will always be a concern, so I guess split foam grips it is.

Benefits of #15 mono/co-polymer over 12#.
It depends on many factors. The techniques you are using, the cover you plan on fishing, size of equipment you have, size of fish you catch, size of your tackle box etc. I usually choose my line, not by the size of bass I will catch, but what techniques I will be using to catch the bass. If I need to get a crankbait down to maximum depth I will use a lighter line, than if depth is not a consideration. If I am using a medium action rod, in order to cast and work a small popper than I am not going to use 20 lbs line like I would when I'm fishing a large plopper on a heavy rod. When I am fishing around abandoned nets on one lake I fish, I use 30 pound braid for all of my crankbaits, because I can pull the baits free from the net, and not lose all of my tackle. If I had an unlimited tackle supply, I would use lighter line in many situations, where affordability comes in as a major factor. Around heavy cover and large bass, I use heavy line, but if a certain technique requires lighter line in order to get the bites, I will use lighter line even in heavy cover with DD bass. I try and determine what is the best line size for the technique that will get the bites and worry about how I'm going to land the bass after I get bit. I see many people come to Mexico with very heavy gear because the bass are big, and the cover is abrasive, but then try to fish lures that only cast and work well on lighter tackle. In general 12 - 15 pound line will land any bass in any lake if you don't get around some type of cover. If you frequently retie and don't mind loosing a few lures, 15 will work in heavy cover, but you will get your heart broken when a big on wraps you around a stick. 20 pound will land more large bass in heavy cover, but does not cast as well as the smaller lines, and you may want to go up a size in reels. Matching the rod, reel, lure and technique with the line size is very important. New line with new knots is as important as pound test. I once landed a bass just shy of 11 pounds on 15 pound Invisex, that wrapped me around a tree for 20 minutes before the limb broke and the fish was mine. That same line broke on a two pound bass a few days later because of a weak spot in the line I didn't detect after landing the large bass. I didn't change the line, because I was too cheap, and I wouldn't be able to find more 15 pound fluorocarbon in my local area even if I had wanted to spend the money ( use what you can afford to change often) If you already own a large quantity of 12 pound line and you don't want to purchase massive amounts of new line, then I recommend you use the 12 pound and change your line often. When the line you have is gone, you may want to change to a stronger line. The Bait Monkey recommends you buy new line now in multiple types and weights. The Monkey always wins. Go buy some 15 and 20 pound line and give it a try.

Planning a trip for 2027
The two places I recommend for freshwater fishing are not as difficult to get to as you may think. Alaska and Mexico. Alaska is expensive, but every fisherman should experience it once in their life. Mexico is bass fishing heaven on earth. Lodge rates are about the same price people pay to go to hotels on beaches in Mexico, but you get to catch DD bass for the same or less money. You can fly to almost any major airport in Mexico from anywhere in the US in one day. Most lodges can get you to the lodge on the same day, but at worst you will be fishing evening on the next day. For a little more money you can rent all of your gear from the lodge, making packing easy. A passport, sandals, a couple pairs of shorts, t shirts, sunglasses and a light jacket are all you need. A passport, plane ticket and carry on bag, does not seem very difficult for a trip of a lifetime. Baccarac, is by far the best for trophy fish, and Aguamilpa may be best for numbers. Both lakes have great lodges, with adequate gear and quality guides. Getting to Mexico and catching bass is easy, bass fishing at home after you go may be difficult. The most difficult part about an Alaskan trip is deciding what type of fishing you want to do, where in Alaska you want to go, and how much money you are willing to spend. Alaska is a big place, and the fishing in one location compared to another is equal to the diversity of fishing in all of the lower 48 states combined. Once you decide on a lodge, and time. Book a direct flight to a major airport near your lodge, and enjoy the long days, and great fishing.

Can you tie an FG Knot?
I have used the FG knot for years in saltwater. I can tie it a few different ways, and my deckhands can tie one with their eyes closed in rough seas. I use an Alberto for most of my freshwater fishing. I can tie an Alberto in seconds, and it is p strong enough. I used to use both uni to uni and albright knots, but after tying my first Alberto, I never looked back. I do use blood knots for tying similar size mono to mono, but do not like the bulk of a blood knot for braid to leader. The FG is the strongest knot, but gets more difficult to tie the lighter the leader line is. In saltwater I'm using 60 lbs or more leaders, making it easy to tie. It is easy to make some common mistakes with the Alberto. I have watched many videos where they are even making the mistakes in the instructional video. Once I learned what the mistakes were, and how to avoid them I did not have any problems with the Alberto, and even use it when I'm in a hurry while saltwater fishing. The Uni to Uni is a strong straight forward knot with almost zero possibility of making a mistake. If you want a strong knot and don't want to take the time to learn a more complicated knot, you will probably never have any complaints with the Uni to Uni. I used it for years and landed numerous large fish of many different species. A correctly tied Alberto is slightly stronger, and much smaller than a Uni to Uni, but not as strong or as small as an FG. If you insist on having the strongest smallest knot possible, the FG is it. There are many ways to tie one, and once you find the one for you, with a little practice it won't be difficult. If you struggle with the FG, don't bother. In my humble opinion it is not necessary for any application you might use in bass fishing. If there is an application that you use while bass fishing that requires the strength and size of an FG ( I'm sure there are many, I just don't use them) than I recommend either taking the time to learn to tie the knot, or use another technique.

First fish of 2026 thread
Not any bass yet, but started the year off with a bang offshore. I won't have time to bass fish for a couple of months. The tuna and marlin bite has been hot the past few days.

Other Species Latest Catch Pics Thread
My boss came down to vacation and we took his boat Redneck offshore of PV for the first time in 2026. First day was a half day, but we still landed 4 yellowfin tuna, all on live bait below a kite, the biggest about 120 pounds. The weather was rough so we were not able to drift offshore for the night, so we motored for two hours to the nearest anchorage at a place called Punta Mita. We got up at 4 AM and headed back out for the second day. We landed 6 tuna the same size class as the day before. All were caught drifting live bait under kites and balloons. We tried trolling for marlin for a couple hours but no luck. That night the wind died down allowing us to drift for the night and try our luck at catching squid for bait. I new if we could get some live squid we could crush the tuna. We fished hard for a couple hours and got 6 nice squid for bait. The dolphins moved in to our lights and chased the squid away. I turned off the lights, and tried again at 3AM, but no luck. We were going to have to get by with only 6 squid. We ran to the numbers from the day before and had the squid under helium balloons at first light. Instantly one balloon went down and we were hooked in to a tuna. The angler took that rod to the bow to fight it and I followed him. I turned around and my deck hand was walking to the bow with a bent rod. He said it was a blue marlin, and right then the marlin went airborne. I asked him if he thought we should break the first tuna off, start the motors and chase the marlin, and he said we couldn't because we had a big tuna on a third rod in the stearn. So far three squid and three fish hooked in 5 minutes. Nothing I could do but hope the marlin didn't spool the 600 yards of line on the reel. I gaffed the first tuna, a small 25 pound yellowfin, and went to the stern to help. When I got there my other deckhand was letting another balloon and squid out. I questioned him if he thought that was wise, when the balloon went down and we were hooked to another large tuna. I have had some hectic moments fishing offshore before, but this was sizing up to be the biggest rodeo I had ever seen. Luckily the marlin kept circling the boat, and we were able to get the tuna in before it decided to head for the South Pacific. I climbed in the tower fired up the engines and a half hour later we had the marlin along side the boat. The fight was too long, and the marlin was not in good condition, so we gaffed it and brought it in the boat. This is the third blue marlin in a year I have kept, I was hoping to tag and release all billfish in 2026 but no use letting a fish go to waste. We hooked a jack and a toro on the last two squid, we only had a few other live baits left, so we decided to call it a day and get back to the dock in time to get some fuel. This was a great way to kick off 2026 and I hope to have the same kind of luck when I get a chance to chase big bass.
