a surprise success

Do you have a hard plastic or wooden lure that you thought would never catch a fish, but it actually did?

Mine happened on a long hot day where we had no bites and were just messing around before leaving. We had tried everything just short of throwing the tacklebox out and letting them pick what they wanted. I tied on a cheap old Kmart (rip) KO type of crankbait and cast it out. Close to the boat, I caught a small bass. It never caught anything else, but I guess you never know. What you got?

I was having cabin fever 1 year and could not wait for ice out. I was at one of my construction sites and had picked up some electrical wire. Well I was board and made this inline up.

Couldn’t believe how many fish I caught with it just after ice out.

You just never know

We were skunking in Little Bay de Noc and as a joke, I tied on a Heddon Tiger lure and cast. The water erupted!

I'm surprised every time I catch a bass.

About eight years ago I purchased a cheap, BPS popper. After switching out the hooks and adding an oval split ring, it sat in one of my topwater boxes. On a rare night outing with my son-in-law, I tied it on his rod. That night, it was the only hard bait that produced and man, did it produce. So much so that it's the only topwater he'll throw. 'The Pop Special' he calls it. Go figure.

I bought two new vintage Rogers Big Jims at an antique store for a buck each. Didnt expect much out of them but I caught more bass on those two baits than I ever had with any crankbait, big ones too. The only reason I have'nt throw them more is they are a little light to cast with my baitcasting gear. I have a set up now to cast them. I scored four more lures on the auction site.

I bought a new Bomber Long A Minnow. When I got around to using it , I noticed it had this stupid prop on the back. I went ahead and started throwing it and caught a limit. The next week i caught my largest limit ever with it. I have about 8 of them now . Other than a buzzbait , its been my most productive top water.

Bill Lewis Floating Rattletrap. I bought 2 of them a long time ago but never used them. Was catching bass on a spinnerbait on a flat on an early spring day with warming water and a strong south wind. The bite died so I put on one of these floating traps. Caught two 6 pounders and another big one jumped off. A FLOATING Rattletrap? You gotta be nuts!

My solid blue bladed jig. I don't even remember why I decided to make one, or what gave me the confidence to fish it, but it's one of my best producing colors every year for several years now, and the bait that I caught my biggest bass in a kayak tournament to date on.

What cereal brand were they in? I want to get it on my wife's grocery list. 🙂

J/K...The top one looks like a topwater and a lot going on there.

I think blue is one of those "sleeper" colors. I picked up some blue crankbaits last week, excited to try them out. Bill Dance once said you can use any color plastic worm as long as it is blue. Where did I put that Color-C-Lector?

I almost bought these when my kids were big into Pokemon. I thought they'd think they were cool but never did end up getting either.

My daughter brought the blue one back from Japan and she got me Pikachu from Tackle Warehouse.

When she gave them to me I wanted to try them out but new if I lost one I would never hear the end of it so they have seen limited action. Pikachu really works though. I think i caught over dozen the few times I have used it. Fun baits.

Years ago my dad caught a few bass on a Heddon Big Bud. I thought he was fooling until I saw a pic that his friend took.
