  1. Sounds like a great deal. Go for it and yes either rod will just fine as a senior rod.
  2. I uséd to have a spinning model that was called the senkos model. I was pretty disappointed in the sensitivity. It felt like a glass rod. I sold it. Now my buddy has the drop shot model and loves it and says it's very sensitive. Idk, everyone has their own opinions.
  3. I like the president a lot more than my trion. Worth the extra $20 IMO. As far as rod, maybe a Fenwick silver hawk that goes on sale often for about $50. Last summer I caught a 4' hammerhead on mine. I thought the rod would snap at any moment but the medium powered rod handled the 40 minutes battle like a champ. Pretty sensitive too.
  4. Awesome, let us know how you like it. I've never owned any okuma stuff so I'm curious.
  5. Shimano metanium mgl xg on a dobyns DX HP of your desired length and power.
  6. Can you give a little info: spinning/casting, technique, budget helps narrow it down too.
  7. 3 years ago my buddy and I were on the Ohio river on his boat in September. The shad were schooling so we threw a cast net and caught a bunch for live bait. I had a 7' medium spinning rod with a live shad rigged drifting while I was casting senkos for smallies when all of sudden something hits my shad. I grab the rod and set the hook. All of a sudden I was in the battle of my life. I only had 20lb braid with a 15lb fluoro leader. This fish was pulling the 10' boat around. Id reel a little then the fish would run. I was losing this battle. I thought the rod was going to snap or my line would break at any moment. After 30 minutes I started gaining some ground finally and was able to bring the fish up to the surface. We got a look and it was a huge flathead. It must've been 4' long! This is when I got stupid and tightened my drag and she dove and poof she was gone.
  8. 4" senkos, rapala x rap 8, coffee tube, 3" grub, fat ika.
  9. You are going to get a lot opinions on this. If it was my $500 I'd get a megabass xx orochi spinnerbait special or flatside special because they are versatile enough to fish all of those baits. For reels, I'd look at: curado 70, curado I, tatula CT or alphas sv.
  10. Wire leaders for toothy creatures. I've never used one. I suppose if you're targeting pike or musky but I don't. A Snell wraps up the shank of the hook and through the eye. I snell flipping hooks. If you tie it right it helps set the hook and it's really strong
  11. I use 15-20 fluoro leaders for flipping/pitching although I don't really flip. One of the main reasons is if I get hung up I can break off without losing a ton of line especially fishing from the bank. Good luck trying to break 50lb braid and if you're not careful you could break your rod or damage your spool.
  12. Anti reverse bearing or what Lew's calls roller bearing is the 11th.
  13. It looks like your budget is around $100. Of those 2 I'd get the Lew's, but I'd rather get a tatula for under $100 on eBay.
  14. It sounds like a typical medium and will work fine.
  15. I was in FL this winter visiting a buddy and in his housing plan were a bunch of little ponds. I didn't have my gear with me so we borrowed a neighbor's. He had some Walmart combos which were Shakespeare. Not the best maintained or quality gear. They were light rods but I still t rigged up some senkos. I just made sure to reel the slack before sweep setting and did quite well. My buddy who doesn't fish actually got the hang of it did well too.
  16. For a dedicated frog I look at tip action first. It needs to enough tip to work and walk a frog and then a nice strong back bone to set the hooks and get them out of nasty stuff. Sensitivity isn't necessary but I do like a lighter rod if possible. I don't have a dedicated frog rod though. I have 2 rods that double as punching and jig rods so sensitivity is important for me.
  17. A medium power spinning rod is one of the most versatile of all. What's your budget? Look for sales.
  18. I agree a wacky rigged senkos is a my favorite follow up bait. If it's weedy I t rig it weightless.
  19. Wow, those are some pics. I'd keep that place top secret. Up north that would be a rare place like a little utopia.
  20. The tatula CT is a great choice. Get the 8.1. Why do you want a MH rod? I fish in the North but still use frogs in some of the nastiest stuff so I use a 7'2" heavy rod.
  21. I'm not familiar with that rod. I always look at the line and lure rating as well as the action when determining the use of a rod.
  22. I have other xx models and they are some of my favorite rods in my arsenal. They aren't as sensitive as my nrx893, but they aren't in the same price range. I don't have any glx but I've heard they are comparable in sensitivity. They are in the same price range as the imx, but heard they are more sensitive. It's all opinion anyway. I'll bet you will be happy with it. Be careful because you're going to want more.
  23. You should fine with a rod rated 3/16-5/8 for 1/8 rigs especially if your primary use will be senkos and you want to take one rod. You definitely don't want to use the ml for senkos t rigged.
  24. I take 3 rods with me and I choose based on the body of water I'm fishing. I use casting gear exclusively in my yak. Most of the time I have a medium, MH and heavy powered rod.
