Targeting big cold water bass
I live in New England. I do pretty well fishing in cold water, down to 40. But I catch a lot of smaller fish mostly 2-4lb fish. It’s still fun cuz I’m getting them. But I’ve always heard best time for giant bass is in the winter and colder months. I fish a lot of big swimbait, jigs, small swimbaits, blades, hair jigs, ned rigs. Now that i have a boat, no more shore fishing or kayaks fishing. Last year I did well on 8 inch floating hudd, I rigged the hudd to slow sink, dam near suspends. It was killer fishing over weed beds. any advice for targeting bigger cold water bass

Slip bobber rig, cold water big bass
I’d rather fish a hair jig on bottom slowly twitching, but in this situation where the big bass are sitting under stumps. I think I may try it. Even if it’s a bit bigger then most flies. Subtle movements of hair and fur right in front a big bass. I’m sure it would hit it. Just drop it in front of it’s face. And twitch it!

Slip bobber rig, cold water big bass
So I’m thinking out loud here. I was thinking of fishing a slip bobber rig in cold water, pitched to deep stumps. I feel the bass sit under these big stumps. If a hair jig slowly falls down in front of them and sits there, slowly twitching in front of them, if it’s 30 seconds or 5 minutes, they’ll hit it. Right? Am I crazy???? What are some other baits you would fish in such a spot as I describe. I’d fish anything under the rig. 1/16 ounce to 3/4. Different weights and size of material for bigger bait fish. I live in Massachusetts. I got a pond with really big bass. My buddy has 3 8s over the past 3 years. Biggest here for him is 8.12. my biggest is 6.13. Don’t get me started lol. Fish the same baits during the same time of year, but I haven’t gotten my 8lber. It’s driving me crazy that I haven’t broke the 8lbs mark! But we only fish this spot a very specific time of year for giant bass. 1000s of river herring run up the river. I’ve had my heart stop and d**n near cried at some of these bass, that nip, follow or stare at my bait. But I HATE!!!!! Let me repeat that. I HATE!!!! that I have to wait till this time of year to get my chance at breaking 8. Could be a week or a month. Now the weeds are dying I want to get back after it again for cold water. I do pretty well in cold water, better then my buddy. Layout- it’s an old apple orchard. THERES A TON OF STUMPS!!!! very weedy in summer! Old creek bed, river channel snakes it’s way through. Channel gets to 15 feet but along the sides, it’s 3-5 feet very shallow along the edge of the channel. These stumps will be surround by 3-4 feet deep but under them it’s a big hole. I’ve marked 8 feet under some stumps.

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Took the 2.5 hour drive west to the CT river for some walleyes. They were not cooperating. We got a few smallies, fallfish, rock bass and so many dam big eels, I could of had enough striper bait for next season. Broke 2 PBs for fallfish and rock bass!

Catching big bass
Yep, I’ve switched over to big swimbaits a few years ago, the numbers of big bass I caught went way up. It was awesome. I still fish everything from ned rigs to 10 inch swimbaits. Biggest for me is 7.8. Worst part is I KNOW IVE HOOKED 8s! No doubt in my mind. Sadly it been a few years since I’ve hooked into some giants. Haven’t broken 6lbs in. 3 years. Lots of bass 3-4s lbs on swimbaits now

Catching big bass
I live in MA. My goal is to break 8. Bugs the hell out of me that I haven’t done it. My buddy has 4 8s in 3 years up here in Ma. He only fished very specific time of year in very specific locations. Sadly I fish the same place as him during the same time. But it’s like he gets them during the afternoon and I’m fishing the morning bite or vice versa. We often fish the same baits. I’ve had them nose my bait. Follow them or slightly nip it. But I have to wait a full year to ge them. It’s during the herring run when 1000s of river herring run in to the pond from the ocean. They stack up like cordwood. I hate the fact that I have to wait all year to get my shot!

Topwaters- does it get too cold?
I’ve caught topwater bass in February in Massachusetts! I don’t know the water temp. No more then night 40s. Caught 2 that trip. Bite sucked during the afternoon. Nothing. Tried out a new swimbait, Matt lures 6 inch strong shad, playing with the bam. First fish of the day. Small 2lber, but I was so shocked. Then I stayed after dark to try for another, got a 2.5er on a 9 inch ms slammer. I’ve done well in mid November at night on topwaters. But I mostly fish wake baits!

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
I’ve always done better deep water ponds in the cold. But last winter was the first winter I had good success with shallow water. Big and small swimbaits! Not much else worked

That’s not bad chipping, I was thinking if I paint it, big chips would come right off I think I got some when I used it on some wooden lures

Painting spoons?
That’s what I’m thinking, but I don’t want them to chip on my first trip

Painting spoons?
Never heard of them, ill check em out thank you
-
Painting spoons?
I have a bunch of spoon blanks. How should I paint them? Don’t have an air brush and I’ve never used powder paint before. Was thinking nail polish or spray paint. Use 400 grit sand paper, scuff it up. Then paint it, then use a clear top coat.

No ones on the lakes, fish are chewing, I fish blades and light jigs, I’ve had great days with small 1/8-1/4 hair jig, and a small jighead with a small swimbait. I’ve even had great topwater fishing at night In late October and early November.

How effective is “wake lure”?
Last February I got 2 small wake bait fish, 1 was on Matt’s 7 inch strong shad, the other was on a 9 inch slammer. This was up here in MA. February 9th I believe. I was shocked. But I’ve caught swimbait wake fish in mid November here in MA as well mostly at night. Some ponds are better then others for topwater baits, especially at night, in the cold.
