Hello Huddleston... Where are you?
^^^ yep what he said. There’s plenty out there for slammers and hudds. I have no issue in getting them. I just bought my 20th slammer a few days ago, and almost pulling the trigger on some hudds

Ice fishing for smallmouth?
Haven’t done much ice fishing for them. Have a spot we SMOKED them. It was a few years ago when we last had a good solid freeze. This pond only had perch and smallies. It was just a mater of finding them. once we found them was balls to the wall. North area, nothing, southern area smoked em. Did good on shiners also jiggin grubs on bottom. I’m sure hair jigs, small plastics and blades will get them. They are open water winter baits for me during the winter they stack up. I fish for them open water near off shore structure. I would find a good depth map. Look for breaks. Ledges. Deep flats, humps, deep rocks. Also a change in bottom composting like sand to gravel will hold fish. Some lakes that’s all it takes is the change in bottom. These are usually spots that lack offshore structure. Keep fishing checking different spots. Once you get them. Stay don’t move. Fish the whole area.

Winter fishing
Shallow ponds are more affected by the weather. So that’s good and bad. the deep ponds are less affected. shallow ponds warm up quicker but also cool faster. so during warming trends that shallow water will raise a few degrees getting the bass active. BUT!!! those deep ponds are more stable. So during the cold weather a deep pond may be better then the shallows do to stable water. But then again. A shallow pond will have bass that will be easier to find. Are they hitting??? Only one way to find out. deep ponds I like to fish more then the shallow ponds. Find some deep structure. Green weeds, rocks, humps, ledges etc. I fish finesse baits. Hair jigs and blades mostly.

Pond bass in winter
Agreed. It’s probably the pond but also just about finding active fish in the pond. I’ve spent a lot of time fishing a lot of different ponds in the winter. Some ponds simply better then others. Some ponds I love in the warmer months but can’t buy a bite in the cold

Pond bass in winter
I’ve been fishing a new pond. Been killing it. Only fished it twice. Both times this past week. I’ve only shore fished. The pond is only 9 acres. The bass have been in one spot. It’s the northern side of the pond near the dam. The have been chewing swimbaits. 4-8 inch swimbaits. But I know that if I fished a different pond I wouldn’t be doing so well. Just keep fishing. Try new spots. Maybe you’ll stumble on a killer cold water pond.

Bunch of hits and had a chance for a big fish. I’ll take it. 2 times at this spot. 2 big fish and bunch of hits! In January. Can’t wait to see what this place is like in the warmer months

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Thanks buddy!! Plenty of open water down here!!! Got out again today shore mission. Got a late start thinking it was going to rain. Pond hoping around carver. first spot, small super shallow and weedy. Been here handful of times never killed it. Don’t hit this spot often. Hit the dam area. It was the wind blown shore also sun baked. Recipe for good fishin. Had a few good hits, managed 2 bass few pickerel. Real preys and hudds got the job done. Nothing big. figured this was the pattern to be following. Yesterday was the same pattern. Fishing the windy sun baked dam area. Couldn’t repeat the pattern again. just couldn’t find a spot with the recipe. spot 2. Shallow weedy a bit bigger then pond 1. Fished 2 spots on it. The dam area. Nothing. Went to the sunny calm area. Got a big hit on the hudd. Only hit I got here. spot 3. I’ve heard good things. Biggest out of the 3 ponds I fished. Shallow and weedy. Started out fishing the sunny side. Started out slower. Got a hit on the hudd. Wasn’t a big fish. Kept walking around hitting the shallow wind blown shore. Slow fishin. Got one small bass on a chatter bait. worked my way back. Started getting more hits as the sun was going down. Couple more big hits on the hudds. Some small pickerels. Saw a few splashes and swirls

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
First trip of the year today. It was bit windy out there especially in the kayak. But it was so worth it. Decided to try and scratch up a holdover striper. Got one, fought hard as hell. Man, I sure do love these striped fish. Had a few whacks. Got a couple of huge white perch also got a few jumbo yellows! Decided to do a recon mission down the cape Wanted to check out a new spot I’ve been eyeing. Just wanted to get a feel for it. Wasn’t expecting to slay the bass. Got a bunch of fish. Mostly 1-2 lbs fish. Biggest one was 3.11. All fish came on hudd weedless shad. Tossing an 8 inch hudd. It got CRUSHED. Missed the fish. I had a few hits on the real prey pond shiner. They didn’t want anything else. Tried a rattle trap, jerkbait and real prey perch. Man did they CRUSH the weedless hudd shad. The bass were beating it like it owed them money. such an incredible first trip of the year. So happy. Couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Looking for a swim bait
If you want to throw bigger swimbaits. Lot of people say a 4 inch keitech is a swimbait. For me swimbaits are like hudds, ms slammers. Spo , savage gear. if you want to throw bigger baits. I’d look into savage gear, and spro. Both are “cheaper” swimbaits. They get bit. They also have a decent line up, good variety. A spro rat 40, bbz1 6 inch, savage gear 6 inch line through, savage real trout. Those 2 company’s are were a look if you want to get started.
