How to be a better jig fisherman
Pitch a jig to every piece of cover. I usually cast out to Cover and crawl back to the boat. Jig Fishing is awesome! It gets chewed by giants

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Decided to hit a new pond on the cape, checked it out in the early spring from shore. Shallow very weedy. I worked my way along the eastern shore to the the NE shore line. Nothin. Weeds were almost to the surface couldn’t work much. But there was Enough water between the shore line and weeds to cast a lure. Tried chatter bait, tiny klash. Weedless hudd and jerkbait, nothin to show. I worked my way over to a shallow wind blown cove. I almost wrote it off due to the weeds near the surface but the wind blew me into the open water thankfully. Got 2 on the vision 110 jr. Nothing big pair of 1.5ers. Fish were shallow in the dying pads. had another whack on the tiny klash. kept fishing and working my way along the sun baked shore. It got deeper and weeds weren’t as bad. No hits. I did see a ton of bait up shallow at the launch. on my way back Home to marshfield. My trailer blew a tire on route 3 north, between exit 3 and 5. Anyone sees that boat, it mine, lol. Goin back tomororw to grab it!

Silver Buddy Tips
My favorite winter bait. I did well last weekend on it, water temps in the 50s. Slow hops. Lift Pause, lift pause repeat, I don’t rip it up, I lift it. As said above, they’ll eat it off the bottom. Also good in healthy grass. Rip it off the grass to get a reaction bite. Good winter bite find healthy green grass. That’s where the bugs bait and oxygen is

Got a bunch today at a new pond. Busted as gettin there. Fished 1-830. Slow bite till sunset, then got a bunch quick. Hudd shad and Matt’s 6 inch strong shad. Figured night bite would be great. Grind for em. Fished a couple different baits without a whack, switch to the 7 inch black slammer as I work my way around the pond, started getting dinks. I was near the launch cast out, my last cast, gets smoked, fish missed the 7 inch slammer. Switched to the 9 inch, and it smoked it. 2 good fish and bunch of dinks. Biggest 2, 3.13 and and 4.12.

I’ll bee out night fishing tomorrow and Friday up Here in MA. Saturday and Sunday during the day and probably night It’s been in the 40s And lows in 20s-30s going to be 60s the rest of the week and next week. Night fishing I’m targeting places where there is an inlet. Water flowing into the pond. Wake bait. Go Slow!!!!! During the day. I’m fishing, jerkbaits, Jigs, rattle traps, hair jigs, swimbaits, maybe start Tossing a blade.

Southern vs Northern lures.
More like technique. Like chase shad into back creeks in the fall. No shad up here. Their cold water spring and fall season are much different. When I look up winter fishing. They are most likely talking about shad schools and water that reaches 45 ish, my water freezes. Not many reservoirs up here. No suspend bass over 100 Feet of water.

Need suggestions...
I second this

Targeting big cold water bass

Fishing until ice up..
I target deeper clear water ponds, I try to make sure they are smaller so I can find the fish easier. Blades, hair jigs, ned rigs, small finesse swimbaits have done well. I Also target shallow ponds at night. Wake baits 5-8 inches. Go slow. I’ve caught night bass when the guides were ice. some ponds are better then others. I hit 2 new ponds last winter here in MA. Some weeks they were frozen, other weeks they were open. I did very well. All from shore. Ned rigs, jigs, big swimbaits, small swimbaits did well. Both were shallow ponds. Both same river. One had more current then the other. This was the smaller shallow pond. When the bite was on, the fish were stacked up in the deeper section near the outlet. It was an impoundment with a small culvert dam. the 2nd pond down river from the 1st. Much deeper and much bigger. All fish came in the area near the inlet. The inlet area is very shallow, but there’s a deeper hole close by it. First deeper water in the pond. There was a shallow flat the that extended out to the creek channel, I was standing on a point, straight in front and to the left was the deeper hole, the right side was shallow flat. one of my go to cold water spots, deep and clear. 25 feet deep. The northern side is where I do the best. The northern side is deeper, and has more structure. There a shallow flat that drops quickly. Also has a point, shallow one side deep on the other. I say point cuz it’s dry land that goes out but it drops quickly off the right and straight out but the left side is shallow and weedy. Also I believe the reason this area is productive is the green weeds all winter. This is a spring fed pond. This pond started my cold water fishing. We found it by accident. We were pond hopping struggling, picked this pond we slayed. It was mid December. If there’s no ice I’m on the kayak here! hope this helps. When I’m looking for info. I like when some describes a spot, so I can try to find a spot like that on my spots to help me get better.

Went out to my usual spots. Little shore mission. Got a nice little brookie at spot 1. spot 2 was hoping to see the juvy herring stacked up. But they were no where to be found. Got a perch. spot 3 I haven’t been to in awhile. Got a few pickerel, perch and 2 bass. Most were on the jerkbait, but I got a few perch and pickerel on a jig I tied.

Best walk the dog lures?
A lunker punker is awesome! 6 inch spooks and one larger size. Fishing magician skid stick. 3-8 inch sizes. Throws a lot of water while twitching side to side. Hardcore customs 8 inch Hellfire missle. Casts like a bullet but good luck getting one. smaller spooks I love the strike king sexy dawg

When to shut it down for the year?
Never. Up here in Massachusetts drive 30min to an hour north or west 12 inches of ice. 30 min south open water! I love fishing on the boat in the winter. Got some lakes loaded with smallies. Got a small pond loaded with stripers to. Can’t beat it

Targeting big cold water bass
Makes so much sense! I do love cold water smallies, definitely will be out there on smallie waters since I got. A new boat! Blades are definitely the best for smallies. Ive done well on largemouth with blades. I have a 6.9 giant smallie. But I need that giant 8lb largemoit that’s why I spend time chasing largemouth. I’ve seen a lot of guys CRUSHING fish in shallow ponds allll winter ! Like big fish like 5-7lbs!

Targeting big cold water bass
Id say anything over 6 is big. One of my PBs. Don’t got a weight, d**n scale broke. It was in super early March, pond still half frozen. Got it on a black blue finesse jig up in super shallow water under a tree. I enjoy winter fishing less people out there, weather comfortable. But I’ve always struggled getting large fish in cold water. Even pre spawn when everyone says it’s time for PBs. My biggest is 7.8 on a 9 inch swimbait cranked down along a steep drop off, this fish was on a hot sunny afternoon in June! I catch my big fish in warmer waters. May-September. I REALLY REALLY want to break 8. My buddy has 4 8s in the past 3 years. He only really fishes april and may for bass. very specific time and place. Worst part is I do the same thing he does. Same baits and same spots during the same time. I’ve often fish the same spot and says he gets his 8s. Like I’d fish the morning and tell him it’s TIME!!! He’ll fish the afternoon and get em. Or he’d fish the morning and I’d fish the afternoon. so slow rolling a spinner bait? Never tried it. I don’t fish spinner baits often. Ive also heard lipless cranks work well! I’ve been trying those but haven’t gotten much on them. I’m more of a methodical, dissect an area with slow moving baits kind of guy. Bottom fishing with jigs. But always the dam smaller bass hitting before the big girls

But If you watch Matt Allen’s videos. He fishes in northern Cali. Their waters get into the low 40s even high 30s. You know calli and it’s rep
