Should I go fishing? Conflicted on this one,

Featured Replies

I want to go but i'm very skeptical based on the conditions, It's beautiful outside right now but my Bassforecast app is saying it's poor, I know you shouldn't put your judgement into what an app says but the fishing has sucked recently and I don't know what to do lol.

  • This should be a no brainer. How many bites are you going to get in your garage?

  • Throw that bass app away .

Happy ending to this thread, finally caught some fish and managed to use my new scale for once.

Just go - any day you can wet a line is better than doing something else. And I've caught decent fish on days that those apps said were 'poor' - I don't even look at them anymore.

Yes, go fishing:  Test the accuracy of the forecast by collecting data.

With rare exceptions someone on the lake is usually catching fish... keep putting your time in and that may be you. Only time to say no when you have the option to go is dangerous weather/conditions, and since that's not the case go enjoy yourself.

No offence, but you should probably stuff that app in the trash.
I use quite a bit of technology on my boat, from trolling motor to Talon and side image units in between, but it’ll be a cold day in hell when I rely on a stupid app to tell me when to fish. If the lake isn’t froze up, and I have the time, my boat is going for a float, and it’s extremely rare I don’t find fish of some sort. There’s always a way to catch them, regardless of the time of day or weather pattern. Just have to figure out what they want, that’s the fun of fishing to me at least.

Thanks for the responses guys. I went out today but still got skunked, guess the fishing is just tough right now, glad I went though!

Always yield to your Horoscope ?

My app actually has a ringer on it when fishing conditions go to excellent.......sometimes it causes me to run outside and cast AIMLESSLY into the night.

Nah, haven't used them in years.

Only thing I check is wind speed.

Ummmmm.....yeeaahhh...go fishing. You'll be mad at yourself if you don't...always wonder what it would have been like. If you go you don't have to wonder what coulda been. Btw according to alot of things Friday was supposed to be a crappy fishing day here...I caught 21 bass that day. So don't believe every conventional wisdom nugget you hear about bass...they are only predictable to a point.

Last night should've sucked. Zero wind. High pressure. Crystal clear skies. A giant moon, like daylight. The bite was crazy for a spell, and its usually the pits under these conditions out here. Aggressive bite windows open up regardless. You've gotta be out there though...unless your wife/girlfriend sez it's red panty nite, or day.?

Hey, did you learn something?  Did you pay attention and make note of what DIDN'T work today in these specific conditions?  Did you practice casting?  Did you try a new knot?  If you did any of these things then you were fishing my friend, and fishing is better than not fishing.  That which skunks us makes us stronger.

Reasons to go Fishing:

1. Family first. No fishing.

2. Forget weather conditions - enjoy the great outdoors.

3. Get away from the TV and radio and all of those pain in the behind talking heads and enjoy the peace and tranquility of going fishing

4. And who knows, you may catch your personal best.

Just remember the only rule in bass fishing: FAMILY COMES FIRST.

Now go out there and slay them.

P.S. And you may find Jimmy Hoffa's body, too. ?

The answer is ALWAYS yes, I have gone fishing in -17 and spitting a blizzard down on the river, I caught a whole lot of nothing, but I would do it again in a heartbeat...besides, don't want the old woman to get the idea that I'm NOT as crazy as she thinks I am...

Yes, I learned that the bass are the pickiest creatures on this earth and nobody can predict them. Also practiced my pitching game and realized that the bass fishing will eventually pick up soon. They gotta eat eventually.

You could tell me that today was scientifically proven to be the worst fishing day of all time and I’d still wet my line if I had the chance

I don't use any silly app. If my cows are standing I go fish, if my cows are laying down I go fish, if my cows are eating I go fish, if my cows are on somebody's plate being eaten I go fish.

I don't care is the app is 100% accurate (it's not), if it's a nice day outside and I get teh chance I am going to go fishing. This especially true this time of year when the summer heat isn't cooking my brain.

The big problem with these apps is that local conditions specific to the state of your particular water-body at a particular time will trump any generalized information the app uses to generate the forecast.

Does the forecast consider the main forage species present, competitor predator species, fertility and clarity of the lake, amount and condition of vegetation, water temperature, or whether you've had an algae bloom? Does it know how much current there is, whether there is a thermocline, or whether the lake has turned over?  Does it know anything about the possible locations, depths, or habitats bass have to choose from in your water-body, or the level of dissolved oxygen anywhere?  All these things can and will overwhelm any of the factors used to create the forecast.

I think you just won the thread lol

We had rain in the morning and I think the high temp was supposed to be about 50 F. The rain was forecasted to end and the wind was supposed to be about 10 mph (not bad). We went. We no sooner got out and the wind picked up to hurricane force. I spent about an hour trying to fish but I don't think I got in a single cast that stood a chance of being productive. My wife quit fishing after just a few minutes. She bundled up and tried to enjoy the fall colors and the interesting sky.

Fishing is supposed to be fun and I don't have fun when the weather is so lousy. We could have taken in the fall colors and the sky in the backyard and it would have been a lot less work. LOL I should have gone on Saturday.
