Nice fish! Thanks for the post. @GrumpyOlPharttei understand trying to stop the spread of zebra mussels but I don't think that's the way to go about it!!! Hahah. There's no need for hassling the people that use the fishery. They are the ones that care the most and provide all the cash. Zebra mussels have already proven that they are much tougher than a signed release form.

Just saw where you were from Norris, there's some walleye in that lake. I'm no expert but I have caught them on accident while bass fishing on Norris. The way most people catch them this time of year can be done from the bank. The alewives will spawn up against the rock banks at night, and folks will slow roll big jerkbaits on top or throw top waters. Redfin, bomber long A, spook, popper and torpedo are common choices, but from what I understand it has to be done at night. I have caught them in the middle of summer in the middle of the day fishing a shakey head on Norris but I'm guessing that was totally random luck. People also catch them bank fishing below Douglas dam and fort Patrick Henry dam. Also tellico lake has a good population if you're ever out that way.

After hearing @roadwarriortalk about the power of the rage tail menace on the Tennessee river, I bought some over the winter. For some reason I have only thrown it once until yesterday. We started fishing around 10 am with the water temp around 56. Current was moving pretty good but not as bad as in the afternoons. First fish was a dink smallmouth that hit the rage tail hard and wouldn't let go. Then got a nicer one that bit the same way, maybe 17 inches or so. We got to a deep hole and I was just sitting down dredging the bottom and THUMP!!! Set into the slowest fish of all time but it was heavy. Up comes nice flathead cat, turned into a handful after it saw the boat

Sweet, nice fish and thanks for the details. We had water temps in the mid to high fifties in knoxville Tennessee this weekend also. But I'm guessing that's because the water is moving fast, but you still figure it would be warmer than Massachusetts.

That happens to me a lot when fishing cold weather. Never amounted to anything, I still refuse to use gloves

It all depends on what kind of area you will be throwing the net and what species of bait you are going after. 1/4" mesh is better for shiners but costs more. 3/8" mesh is good for threadfin gizzard and alewives. I catch shiners in small creeks and rivers and that will shred your net. Also I catch shad below dams and always lose a net or two per year. So don't throw expensive nets unless you are in open water. The best way to find shad is to watch for them flipping on the surface. The next best way is to locate them with a depth finder. As far as drawing them in, most people use a light on a boat dock and net them after dark
