Can you help me identify this bass?

Featured Replies

I caught my first fish today! It was so exciting! We were on the chattahoochee river and found the beetle spin was a favorite of the panfish, and I ended up catching my first fish! My boyfriend caught a bluegill and a yellow perch. I'm not sure if what I caught was a largemouth or maybe a spotted bass. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Its probably a largemouth but if it had a red tint in its eyes its a spotted bass.

Largemouth.

Red eyes don't count as means of identification, largemouths also may have red eyes.

I think the devil has red eyes too. Probably was a spotted bass in a former life.

I agree with the others. 99% sure they are juvenile Largemouth bass. I am not 'expert' but for me I have a few odd ways to identify a spotted bass. First is the coloration along the middle section of the fish. Second is the pronounced "belly". Third is the smaller jaw/mouth region that is more reminiscent of a smallmouth compared to a largemouth. Lastly the redish/orange eye.

The coloration doesn't identify the bass; LMB,  Spotted or Red Eye. If The lower jaw extends past the eye then it's a LMB, can't tell from the photo. If the bass dorsal fin is connected then it's a spotted bass, if not it could be a Red Eye and it does have the black spot at the base of it's tail.

Looked like a spot to me at first glance because of where the jaw line is, but I can't tell if maybe it's just the way the bass is being held. Almost hard to be 100% just based off the pics provided,

It looks like a largemouth bass being held by a Georgia Peach (just a compliment, no micro-aggression intended :D)

slayed the bass last year in the hooch on the beetle spin, but with a chartreuse yamamoto grub.  definitely the fastest and easiest way to catch them in the chattahoochee.  i was out on saturday with my wife floating from island ford down to azalea dr and missed a couple trout, had a small bass get off and landed one bluegill.  slow day on the river!

Congratulations on your first fish!

Based on the photo alone, it could either be a largemouth bass or spotted bass.

The mouth isn't especially large and there is a spot on the tail stalk.

Spotted bass also have a raspy patch on their tongue that you won't find on a largemouth bass.

When you close the mouth of a largemouth, the mouth hinge (maxillary) will extend beyond the eye.

Now at least, you now what field marks to look for the next time around.    Have at it  :)

I see 2 of God's greatest creations 1) a pretty woman   2) a largemouth bass.

Welcome to the Forums and congratulations on your personal best largemouth bass!

Glad to see another ATL area basser. I recently checked out the Georgia DNR Fisheries Page and noticed that they have recently discovered four new species of black bass, the Chattahoochee, Bartram's, Altamaha and Tallapoosa bass. Hope to eventually catch all of them, starting with the Chattahoochee.

Chattahoochee Bass:http://georgiawildlife.com/node/4364

Tallapoosa Bass:http://georgiawildlife.com/node/4365

The lower jaw says it's a LMB but it could be a hybrid

Huge congrats on your first fish and welcome to Bassresource. :thumbsup3:

About the same size as all the fish I've caught - welcome!

Bob.  His name is "Bob."

(I've used this before but I couldn't resist)

Not sure of the species, but some days I'd be using that fish to cull! Congrats!
