  1. all good advice, im looking at 6.5 creed, and through our research we figured out that you can't have semi auto. and I kinda realized there's no reason to wear camo in pa because of the orange rules. all good advice, im looking at 6.5 creed, and through our research we figured out that you can't have semi auto. and I kinda realized there's no reason to wear camo in pa because of the orange rules.
  2. ultimately, would like to use the rifle for long range shooting, so I think I'm gonna invest in the 300 Win Mag. I believe my grandfather has a 30-30 and a .308 so ill mess with those as well and will decide. Going to get some cheap 300 win mag ammo to set the rifle up and then put a few rounds through in hunting grade and ill be ready to go. this is good advice. if I am taking game over 250 yards, I will be laying down. Planning on a mobile hunting style, on foot in the woods. this makes it important to practice both methods of shooting. I have decent knowledge of the woods in the area im planning on going which will help. might just buy a 50 cal...
  3. you make a good point with the .308, cost and learning curve are going to have an impact on me and this will help a lot
  4. long time member here. I am an avid outdoorsman, and got really into bass and trout fishing five years ago. My friend was talking to me the other day and expressed an interest in hunting. He is 22 and I am 18. Nobody in either of our families has ever been or expressed an interest in hunting. We live in PA and want to start hunting together. We both want to use rifles, hunt on foot, and target deer. behind my lake house there are 17,000ish acres of state game lands. I spend a lot of time hiking back there and have a pretty good mental layout of the land. We both plan on purchasing rifles, as we would like to get into shooting and hunting simultaneously. I am looking at either a Remington 700 Magpul Enhanced in .308 or 300 Win Mag. also considering the Remington 700 LTR in .308. My friend would like to get an AR-15 style rifle. I am realizing there is a significant price difference in 300 Win Mag and .308. If I were to get the 300 Win Mag, I would likely only use the rifle for hunting, and would do range shooting with my friend's AR-15. I told my friend to look into getting a Federal Firearms License, as both of our rifles are expensive and this will save us a lot of money even with the license fee. The next step would be to purchase a scope. I am thinking of a 4xish scope, whether that is an ACOG style scope or a traditional rifle scope. Would likely be shooting a shorter ranges but would like the option to go long too. I relize I am not at the point where I am going to be making very long shots, and cannot afford a scope for that stuff yet. I do have a very nice pair of binoculars that I will be using to spot deer, which helps negate some of the high cost. I would obviously need Camo, hunting license etc.
  5. going to school in Lock Haven, haven't had much of a chance to fish (priorities, ugh). I did however get a few chances to catch some trout. That has provided a nice break from a stressful couple days. Coming home in the 21st to reclaim my tournament trophy for the 4th time in a row this year. Would be a clean sweep if I hadn't tried to boat flip what would have been the winning fish with 2o minutes left in the first tournament...lesson learned use a net, always!
  6. bump, going to school here, want to catch bass and smallmouth, don't have boat with me
  7. off 115 and 903 near then abandoned motel
  8. thats why I am planning on buying a very inexpensive electric car, for daily driving, and keeping my Toyota FJ as a project for fishing someday! theoretically, if I use the car long enough, it will pay itself off in gas money saved. I know this will work bc I will have had the 2007 FJ for like 20 years by the time I graduate college
  9. think I've fished Brady's before, can't remember. lmk when you fish Pocono again, I am 20 min away, just moved up here for the summer!
  10. sounds good, I will PM you now
  11. Sweet, I fish there all the time, might even do the Tuesday Nighter today. Let me know next time you go, maybe we can cross paths and work together!
  12. nice fish, is that marsh as in marsh creek? been fishing the last two days for 2ish hours at night. my home pond, nothing huge, a few decent bass around 3 lbs and a few big pickerel around 2.5ishlbs all on bhite delight jackhammer
  13. has anyone on here ever fished lake Shirley, my cousin lives on the lake and I have only catfished, and bass fished it once, many years ago.
  14. lmk if you go, Id love to try it out too!
  15. fished Marsh Creek Lake a couple times, water is muddy and about 1' higher than normal, temps at 73* caught like 15 bass on a black and blue jackhammer. Also fished a few small lakes in the Poconos, water was like 63*, normal pool, normal clarity. Caught a bunch on a bhite delight chatterbait.
  16. That's the system I use, sun reflects flakes better, and cloudy, low light matte shows up better.
  17. Should I use it with or without flakes
  18. Thanks, which of the three colors would you throw. I also have a ton of non jackhammers too
  19. First tournament is tomorrow. Won’t get to precise. Small lake, no structure. Water should be 2’-4’ visibility. question: I have three colors of jack hammers: white, black/blue, and bhite delight. Only have 2 rods for chatterbaits tomorrow. Fish from 7-11amWhat two do I throw?
  20. I carry a lot of different weights and styles, and believe it or not, its fairly straight forward for me! You have several compositions: lead, steel, or tungsten - I use lead when I am breaking off a lot because it is much cheaper. Steel when I am not allowed to use lead, like in the Northeastern USA and I am breaking off a lot. Tungsten is my go-to, as it is the smallest and most sensitive. you also have several styles of weights: ball/round, skinny/cylindrical, and teardrop - I use round around rocks, it just comes through better and has more surface area for added sensitivity. Skinny for vertical weeds, because the weights come through much better, and teardrop are like a combo of them both. They come through rocks and weeds well, but not perfectly, so if you are fishing around both, choose a teardrop weight. you now have to choose what weight to use: 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, & 1/2 - I use 1/16 in 0'-4', 1/8, in 5'-8', and so on. If its windy, I go up a size to hold bottom better. I drop shot a lot, and it is therefore worth it for me to carry a ton of weights. If I were just starting out, I'd get two packs of 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 in lead, and experiment with tungsten if you are willing/at that point
  21. fixed!
  22. when I try and sign in, or create a new topic using the top left corner links, I get redirected to the home screen, off the forums. Only way around this is to get a sign in popup to come up or use the create new thread button. might just be my computer, but its been happening for a while so it might be worth bringing up.
  23. went to Marsh Creek yesterday. water temps at 73*+ with 2'-3' visibility. no fish on beds that I could see. fish were in the shaded areas. all smaller sized bass, biggest was around 2 lbs.
  24. have been golfing instead of fishing lately. did get out over Memorial Day weekend n the Poconos. few decent fish and a bunch of smaller males. Seems like a post spawn funk. water temps were pretty high around 64*ish. thats a nice fish. Ive heard that big ones are in there, but they are hard to come by.
  25. you think they already spawned?
