Not the usual....w/ pics
The first fish is not a 19" largemouth, it's a smallmouth bass.

Crank Baits not working
It's not "what" it's "where." You need to target structure and/or cover with a lure that runs at an appropriate depth. On a grass flat that might mean a Mann's -1, Bomber Square A or Norman Fat Boy. If there is deeper water, Bagley BII. On humps, drops, riprap or through timber a Rat-L-Trap type lure or Fat Free Shad might be the ticket. Deep structure can be reached with a DD22. Fall is a GREAT time of year for crankbaits!

So what would you guys do ???
I'm trying, really trying, but I just can't work up a tear... :'( So, What's wrong with fishing for striper half a day and sturgeon the other half? Or alternating full days? Heck, anyone that would fish for green trout when GIANT smallmouth are an option is half crazy, anyway! : BTW, Nice pic of the sturgeon, but I thought they were brown? 8-)

One of those days...
Man, I'm surprised you went to the trouble of making this post and reliving the day. I guess this winter when its -20 degrees and you're snowed in for the duration you can go back and read your "old post," realizing that even when things seemed bad, they can still get worse! Great post! 8-)

backreeling?
whittler, I have read similar stories on another forum about Shimano reels used by kayak fishermen. I always assumed that the reels were submerged for a period of time. I have never experienced the problem, but I am not questioning your statement. I'm sorry the reels did not work out for you.

some more topwater action
Nice fish and pic! I think a great title for you thread would read: "Want To See What 10 lbs REALLY Looks Like?" 8-)

Top Water Senko
According to Gary Yamamoto, you need to use a heavy 5/0 Offset Round Bend Hook with a 1/4 oz screw-in bullet weight. Energy is transfered to the tail with this rig for better action.

Whats your average bass???
Yeah, right... I don't think "anybody" can "do it," but if you ONLY target big bass your "average size" will improve dramatically. However, your "numbers" will decrease even more so! Catching big bass consistantly requires catching no bass occasionally. There is a reason why some very good fishermen (tournament professionals) have never caught a 10 lb bass. I think KVD has only caught one or two DDs and he fishes a lot! :

Top Water Senko
If you're going to fish the Senko as a topwater bait, I STRONGLY recommend the Senko Swimbait.

backreeling?
Shimano Stella 2500FB. Actually, all of my Shimano spinning reels that I have fished over the years have had a dependable drag system. That includes Symetre, Stradic (1000, 1500, 2000 & 2500) and Sustain. In more than ten years I have never had a problem with a Shimano drag (spinning or baitcasting).

Found a new spot
Outstanding post! Now that you have found the brown fish, green one's just aren't going to cut it anymore.

Name 1 thing you learned
Jig fishing. For the past ten years most of my fishing with artificial lures has been predominately soft plastics. I have been focused on the jig for two years and in the last month or so finally "arrived." #2 Swimbaits. Although I have not advanced to the big baits, the smaller plastics (Mattlures Baby Bass and Storm Lures) have produced both size and numbers.

anything you enjoy as much as fishing or more
Cooking and gardening...Seriously... Not just BBQ, my specialties are sauces and soups. Gardening? Yes, my wife and I have an extensive garden that is in full bloom and different bloom most of the year, including the winter! Each season has it's own color scheme, height and texture. Our plantings are for the most part, perrinial, which allows us to add variety over the years by building on the flowers we enjoy the most. Our trees and shrubs compliment our gardens and are have been individually selected. Even my grass varieties were choosen for "special" color and texture.

Colts vs. Broncos
I thought my Broncos played a pretty good game, had an excellent game plan and initially went head-to-head with Indy. But, as the game went on it was obvious that the Colts are The Real Deal! I have seen a couple of their other games and think there is a possibility that they can run the table. Good luck Colt fans, but you still have to face New England. Great football is ahead!

backreeling?
Triton_Mike had a write-up recently. He and a few other "experienced" anglers use this technique exclusively. I works for them very well. Personnaly, I rely on the technology Shimano has built into their reels over time. My experience confirms that these drag systems are 100% dependable and at least for me, much quicker to react than I could possibly be. You never know exactly when a big fish will surge.

Spinnerbaits & Jigs
Yep. Dig around the site a little, particularly in "Fishing Articles." Our library is extensive and most have links for additional reference. We might not have "everything" but we're pretty close.

My 2nd PB with pics-funny story!
Nice bass. Buy a scale, they are not expensive and it will take the guesswork out of your next PB!. Most "8 lb bass" weigh around 5 Lbs. :

The summer slump will end...... it really will ..
Nice fish! The fall bite started a couple of weeks ago in the Mid South. Over the past three weekends I have had a BIG bite on the Cavitron Buzzbait early and a 1/2 oz jig during the day. Although we're a couple of weeks away from Primetime on the Tennessee River, we had a big day Saturday with small fish and I managed to find one 4 1/2 lb smallmouth. Still looking forward to cooler temperatures, but "the season" has begun.

Anyone still use spincast?
I don't carry that rig, but I am surprised. I didn't think ANY spincaster had "come a long way." This is a technology that has reached a dead-end. As far as I know, in terms of advancement, it has been abandoned.
