New Tackle Vs. Old Tackle
Break a hook? Maybe "ever", but it would have been on a hang-up, NEVER on a fish. I fish a variety of different hooks and always give the highest quality newcomers a try. Mustad, Gamakatsu, VMC, Stroker, Trokar, Katsuage, X-Point and Owner all come to mind.

Bass Spawning Habits On Dam Controlled Rivers

Catching Bigger Bass
The biggest issue is the water you are targeting. Unless there are big fish in the pond, lake or river, you can't catch any! Some places are known for bigger fish and these give you the best shot at a trophy. If you have a bait shop, Cabela's, BPS or other sporting goods store, talk with some of the guys that work there, they just might give you a lead. We are blessed here in the Mid South with lots of opportunity and a wide variety of species. However, even though quite a few double digits have been caught this year, you can't "expect" to catch one. Your best shot at a monster largemouth are in the Big Four States plus Mexico. What I think most locals want is just bigger bass than they are catching. Location is still the key, but using bigger baits may help.

Bass Spawning Habits On Dam Controlled Rivers
My observation on the Tennessee River is that bass tend to congragate on and near gravel beds, but they do not spawn there, the water level fluctuates too much. Rather than nesting in 1'-5' of water, I suspect the successful nests are in 5'-10'. I have never actually seen a nest on the river itself. The lures that are red hot right now are all "moving baits". Specifically: PopMax, Pointer & Vision110, Norman Fat Boy, LC Rick Clunn 3.5, Red Eyed Shad, small swim baits (Keitech Swing Impact Fat, Shadalicious and Hollow Belly) and, of course, The Rig. This weekend I will be adding the Rage Lizard and Swarming Hornet/ LFT Live Magic Shad to the mix.

Try It For Yourself...
Too funny... Other guy's experience is a short cut for your success. Try everything in your tacklebox right now on the Tennessee River and you will catch a few fish, or take some advise and catch both numbers and size! The guys here share a lot of the where, what and why. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel.
