Buzz baits....
I bought some buzz baits from a guy on this site a few months back. They were apparently some that he manufactures and he had an introductory price so I bought about 10 of them....THEY WERE AWESOME! Unfortunately, I can't remember who the username of the guy that sold them. If anyone has any idea, please PM me or email me at robert@alabamafishingbuddy.com. THANKS A BUNCH!

Smallie bite is starting to heat up...
The smallmouth are starting to heat up on Lake Wilson in north Alabama. A buddy of mine went up yesterday and he reported that they caught several including one that broke off right at the boat that was a heart breaker. I'm headed up Saturday and will know more after I crush them this weekend.

When to set the hook when fishing minnows.
I also use circle hooks for live bait. I use a 2/0 for most applications and I hook large shiners through the mouth. Just remember, DO NOT set the hook when fishing with circle hooks or you will usually haul air. Like was already stated, just a firm pressure and that fish will be hooked in the corner of the mouth nearly every time.

boaters wanted?
Simple solution is not to have a boater and nonboater classification. Just have boaters enter and they can bring a partner or not if they choose. If you are a nonboater, surely you know someone with a boat that you could partner up with. Trying to fish tournaments without a boat is like trying to play baseball without a bat. It just don't work.

Summer Midday Fishing
I have found fish shallow even in the middle of a hot summer and been able to catch them by fishing pockets on the shady side of the main river. I concentrate on boat houses, piers, and any other structure that I can find that might offer a little shade and use a very slow presentation. A lot of times, I will pitch a T-rigged finesse worm right up against structure and just deadstick it. If no takers, twitch it a little and work it as slow as humanly possible. That being said, you probably need to be deeper if you want to catch quality fish.

Re: Interest in starting an AL Federation Club?
Please contact me via email at rjcorobert@yahoo.com or robert@alabamafishingbuddy.com. I am in the process of starting a club in Alabama. It will be statewide and we have members from as far north as Huntsville and as far south as Mobile. I am looking for some advice on how to get this thing up and running smoothly and you might even be interested in joining us or fishing with us. Everything is in the beginning stages so I am looking for some people to take leadership roles and you sound like you probably are much more qualified than I am.

Sumner County Sportsmans' Club?
I am a member of a lake much like that here in Alabama. If that lake is anything like ours there is a full time caretaker and he should be able to give you the information that you might need for membership. I know that we have a waiting list somewhere in the 7 year range for ours. I would encourage you to look carefully to see if there is a full time resident caretaker or just try to flag someone down who is fishing the lake and ask them.

Starting a club in central Alabama
We are starting a small club in Alabama and plan to begin fishing tournaments in March of 2010. Hopefully we will continue to grow and as of right now we are looking at starting off with around 10-15 boats per tournament. Our membership is from all over the state of Alabama and we will be fishing an 8 tournament schedule the first year and trying our best to spread it out a little to take everyone's travel time into account. Along with the 8 points tournaments, we are also planning to have several smaller tournies, a few crappie tournies, a father/child tournament, and at least one charity event for Toys-For-Tots. If you are in Alabama or one of the surrounding states, we welcome you to join us. For more information, the club's website is www.alabamafishingbuddy.ning.com. We will be holding an organizational meeting early in October and will elect officers and start getting the schedule and rules in place at that meeting. Feel free to email me at Robert@alabamafishingbuddy.com for more information.

Is there a bigger doofus than Aaron Martens?
I am fortunate enough to have Aaron as a member of my website and I can say from experience that he is a stand up guy. He will break his back to help the guys on my site out and is a truly classy guy. Maybe he handles pressure a little differently than some guys but I can't fault the man for being passionate about his fishing and before anyone starts hurling insults, consider the fact that he must be doing something right considering the success he has had and continues to have. Aaron is one of the good guys and in his day to day life he demonstrates that continuously.

Favorite discontinued snacks/food
Magic Shell is one of my vices. They used to make a strawberry flavor as well as a butterscotch flavor but both have been discontinued and replaced with such flavors as cupcake and caramel...NASTY!!!! I want my butterscotch Magic Shell back. I also miss Chocolate Soldier drinks, these big M&M type candies called Oompa Loompas that had peanut butter in them, and another candy that I can't remember the name of to save my life but it was small bits of chocolate covered red licorice...mmmmmmmmm!!!

Wilson Lake, AL
Fished Wilson again on 5/2 and loaded up again. We had 64 fish from 10 species. The bite is really on right now and I will be making that 2.5 hour drive again next weekend.

Your favorite mono and flourocarbon?
Original Stren mono. The best fluoro is whatever kind is on someone else's gear. I hate the stuff.

Wilson Lake, AL
I fished Wilson Saturday 4/25 and we loaded the boat. 61 fish with 9 different species caught. Only about a dozen were smallies and we spent all day fishing the tailrace. The white bass and small hybrids were on a tear and made up most of our catch. We caught smallies, largemouth, hybrid, white bass, yellow bass, drum, channel cat, blue cat, and one nasty old shad that managed to jump on the bait. I fish up there at least once a month even though it is a 2 1/2 hour drive from east of Birmingham where I live and I plan to be back up there this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as well as the following Saturday. Some of the hottest action in the state of Alabama is on Wilson right now but some of the other lakes are wide open as well. Smith, Guntersville, Neely Henry just to name a few are giving up big numbers and some quality fish.

MagWeights
Has anyone used these? What is the verdict if you have? I like the concept of a magnetic weight that will stay attached to the eye of the hook but I have a hard time believing that a magnet that small would be strong enough to adhere to the surface area of the hook that it comes into contact with.

Which Speed Ratio for Different Presentations?
I am using a 5.4:1 for crankbaits, a 7.1:1 for topwater and I have found that it is also helpful for t-rigging and jig fishing so I can pick up slack a lot quicker. 6.4:1 or 6.3:1 for everything else.

Website help!
Thanks for your responses. I went with ipower and got the site up fairly easily. Check it out at www.alabamafishingbuddy.com and see if you think my concept will work. Keep in mind that I already own my own business so if this works cool and if not I'll live. If I can get 1 client, I will have broken even. If I can get a few I will have an excuse to fish.

Website help!
I am starting a new website and I am a rookie. Can someone recommend a good hosting service that is fairly cheap and has no long term commitment? I prefer one that you have actually had experience with, not just one that you have heard of. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please pm me or reply to my personal email at rjcorobert@yahoo.com.

Pouring soft plastics
I am considering trying my hand at pouring some soft plastics. Any advice. Better yet, anyone got any supplies that they are not going to use that I might buy fairly cheap to see if I am going to continue this or not?

New guy from Alabama
Looks like you live in Atalla. I am in Leeds but I fish Neely Henry almost every time out and that is in your neck of the woods. Always in the market for a fishing partner especially one who doesn't mind not loading the boat on these hot summer days. I usually will try to hit the water off of Greensport Road in Canoe Creek around noon or so and bass fish until dark thirty, then I start catfishing if I haven't had enough. We also noodle for catfish on Neely Henry but the noodling season is done for this year. Drop me a message if you are interested in getting on the water and we'll hook up within the next few weeks.

A Tip to remove the "muddy, lake, fishy" taste
Believe it or not mustard works really well too. Just brush the fish with mustard and let it sit for about an hour then rinse the mustard off before you batter and cook the fish.

MY BOAT INSURANCEPOLICY JUST GOT CANCELLED THANKS GEICO-Sea-Safe
Check with AllState. I moved all my insurance to them about a year ago and have been really happy with the premiums as well as the customer service. No claims (knock on wood) so I don't know how they are in that department.

Polarized Sunglasses...what frame/lens color/brand???
I wear Bolle Vigilantes with an amber lense and I love them. I like the way they fit and replacement parts are easy to get if you need to make repairs.

Catfishing Help Please!
We usually just wade out there and find holes under boat ramps and catch them with our hands but if I'm gonna catfish with a rod and reel (and I do quite a bit), I have found that one of the best baits in the world is cheese hotdogs. Cut them into about 1" pieces and put them into a large Ziploc bag. To the hotdogs add 1 pack of grape kool-aid mix and some garlic powder. I use Whisker sticker hooks and 30 test Stren super braid on a BPS Tourney baitcaster. Good luck.

Towing
It's not the towing that will be a problem...It's the stopping. I had a Toyota PreRunner with a V6 and it would drag a 19' fish and ski around with no problem. As long as I didn't need to stop quickly and as long as I didn't mind replacing brake pads at least once a year. Just be careful and keep in mind that a boat that size is going to push a truck that size.
