There’s another thread where Keith Poche’s DQ in the Toledo Bend Bassmaster Open was/is being discussed. I’m not trying to start another thread on subject but wanted to take a poll to see where folks stand on the issue.

Hopefully, someone qualified will answer your question. Until then I’ll give you my answer. ? If it’s idling really high then I would think you need to adjust the throttle cable. If it’s idling a little higher than normal you should be able to adjust the idling speed on the carburetor with a screwdriver. If’s it a modern computer controlled engine you need to consult someone smarter than me. I just noticed you said you put a new starter and selenoid on it so you probably already know everything I just said. ?

I knew a guy that put a caged chicken in the middle of a field and then after dark shot the coyotes that gathered around the cage. He used a rifle with a night scope and silencer. He used military equipment. None of it was legal. He had no coyotes on his place for a couple of days until the replacements arrived. ?

The difference in IPT between the two reels is 4 inches. That’s assuming they have the same amount of line spooled on them. The IPT actually changes during the retrieve as the line is added back to the spool. I rarely think about the gear ratio of the reel I have in my hand. The fish will not know if you’re fishing a 6 or a 7 and you probably won’t notice the difference either. Don’t overthink it.

Rod balance is a concept dreamed up a few years ago to sell more rods. If you fish by balancing the rod on one finger without a lure tied on, I could see where it would make a difference. Otherwise, I think the whole concept is laughable and completely ignores the laws of physics. Some people seem to enjoy trying to achieve a balance point as close to the reel as possible using the one finger balance test. If this brings you joy then go for it. My only objection is when folks claim it matters while fishing.

You control the lure’s speed by cranking faster or slower. I can fish any lure as fast as I want with 5:1 ratio reel. Where I want a fast reel is in situations where I want to get the lure back in as fast as possible so I can make another cast. For example, if I pitch a Texas rig at a stump I’ll let it sit for several seconds, hop it few times and then I want to reel it in as fast as possible so I can move on to the next stump. Where I want a slow reel is when I’m casting and cranking the lure back to the boat all day long. The lower ratio still allows me to retrieve the lure as fast as I want but it’s easier to crank, especially with a big crankbait. For a big swim bait I would go with a 6 but a 7 would work also. There’s not that much difference.

The 6 will be 14% easier to crank and 14% slower. I looked at the inches per turn on their website and did the math. If you make a 200 foot cast it will take 85 turns to retrieve the bait with the 6 and 75 turns with the 7. Could you even tell the difference and if so which would you prefer?

I lived in northern Alabama when I got my first boat. When I bought my first map of Guntersville, the owner of the tackle store asked if I fish the lake a lot. I explained to him that I just bought a boat and was new to lake fishing. He pulled out a pen and said he would mark a few spots for me. The first place he marked he said was the most famous spot on the lake. I’m pretty sure that spot is where Wheeler was when the tournament ended today. It's hard to bet against Wheeler. He's been over 20 lbs in every round he has fished in this tournament. One of the others will have a big day and make it interesting. Wheeler will probably need 20 lbs to win.

Does “Visitors may access the area by vehicle as well as enter the 500 acre impoundment via a roller boat ramp” exclude other reasonable options? Can a kayaker carry his kayak across the road or does he have to use the rollers some how? Poche did not use the rollers because he could not do so without violating tournament rules. People have ask for evidence that jumping the road is prohibited by law. I haven’t seen that evidence so I assume it’s not against the law. I do think he violated tournament rules that justify his DQ. Breaking the law is not one of them from what I’ve seen.

Spinning gear was very popular here in Tennessee when I was growing up and when I started choosing my own gear in the 1970s. Billy Westmorland and Charlie Brewer had a big influence around here. I didn't start using a bait caster for bass fishing until the early 90s. I now use both every time I fish. I probably use spinning gear the most. I would not be happy using just one. I think it's important to fish your way. There's not a right answer. Do what works for you where and how you fish.
