Tank is an 11 week old Belgian Malinois German Shepherd mix.

We've been waiting a long time for a chance to share our lives with one of these special & stunning dogs.

Those dog are a pretty amazing breed. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have one as a member of the family. High energy for sure! 

He’s a beauty. They are a great breed. True athletes.

congrats my daughter has both a shepherd and a malinois. Both are beautiful animals. The Malinois, at four yeas old, is as energetic as a pup.  He is my son-in-law's K-9 partner and the smartest of dogs I've ever known. Love its color. Male?

Best laid plans . . . 

This was a such a rare oppurtunity.  Knowing the parents and lines doesn't happen often in a rescue situation.  We picked him up the day after we re-Homed the foster husky.  Been a bit of a whirl wind weekend for us.

Good thing you are retired. Those dogs are smart and can cause trouble if not trained young and often.

My best friend has a Malinois (she's sort of half mine, at least the dog thinks so) and she had it trained professionally for a while.

 

There are a few personality types (some more aggressive), but they can all be trained. I always trained dogs myself but he really did a great job. She was difficult at first.

 

The cops in San Jose told me they call their department Malinois "MalinEvils", so be aware!

 

Very intelligent dog she is like a well behaved perso...scratch that, shes a great dog! I love this dog to death. She's my phone wallpaper.

Haha... Pretty soon you'll have to pair up singles and everyone will know you have a puppy.

Beautiful puppy.  Those Malinois are really fastidious and resilient.  If I reflect on it, working dogs of those 2 breeds probably have saved me and a lot of my buddies from serious injury or worse on more than one occasion.  Once he gets a little older, you can probably give up your exercise routine just to keep up with him.  I know my brother had to start running and lifting weights after he went from being a patrol officer/dog handler to investigations a couple of years ago.

Like any dog they take a lot of work to train. Normally, the dog isn't the problem, it's the owner. I think @A-Jay is fully capable of turning this pup into a fantastic companion.

It takes a village or in this case 

A Pack.

And we have a stable one which is a huge advantage.

Not all dogs and breeds are made equal and it's best to know that from the start. My friend's Malinois is the best dog ever, but she was a handful at first. We knew a lot about the breed and what to expect though. That's all I'm saying.

 

For instance, German Shephards are almost identical in behavior. Malinois are just as protective but also more aggressive in general. Some are some aren't, it's well known that there are these personality types with the breed though. It's not a bad thing, they aren't Pitbulls. 

 

Shephards aren't considered aggressive, Malinois can be. Not out of control, but aggressive. I saw it myself early on and it was eye opening. They are pretty high energy too. This is all well researched and easy to look up.

 

I don't feel she needed professional training, however she needed more training than most people do for their dogs. Most people don't train their dogs too well in my opinion.

 

Like I said they can be trained just fine. I don't really know A-Jay but he seems like a very responsible guy who does things right.

 

My friend's Malinois is like a (good) person - so smart, so well behaved. A great dog that I honestly love more than most people I know.

I appreciate the concern 

My wife and I have quite a bit of experience with several breeds,

They are all dog first and that's where we start,

Breed specific and then individual personality traits become apparent and are addressed along the way.  Clearly we expect to learn as much or perhaps more from this little guy before it over.

That's one aspect that made this particular rescue so attractive. 

He's a smart dude though, I can already tell you that.

I imagine dogs that are already trained can help the trainer on a new pup. When I was at the conservation event this past weekend I watched a guy throw a retriever dummy into the pond. Dog went and grabbed it. When he got back to the beach his master had him sit in the water with the dummy in his mouth for probably 5 minutes before he gave him the ok to bring the dummy to him. I can only imagine the hours upon hours of training that goes into creating a successful hunting dog, or any other kind of working dog for that matter.
