I bet your dogs are better behaved than mine, but man oh man, a dog on a hot scent trail is a force to be reckoned with. I “had to” carry my dog a ways to get him to relent on a deer scent trail. I wasn’t ever really sure what set him off each time but I saw it with my own eyes just this evening. Luckily I didn’t have Bo with me haha

i think being inside a fence for 8-12 hours each days just makes our dogs prey drive worse and worse

D6-D00475-FC85-481-D-9-F3-F-50411-DBE0-D

We have a fairly massive deer herd that lives all around us.

Really find out just how many there are and how they are all over the property every night after the first good snow.

I have 'several' huge oak trees out back and they come in to dine on the acorns.

We leave them 'piles'. Our Dogs get used to them.

The prey drive is a little different in each and I've had many that would take off after them and never come back.

They stayed on lead all the time.

My current pack is somewhere in the middle, they'll make a short chase but when the deer get way out, they turn around and come back.

Except for Tank, he still thinks that one day he'll catch one - he'll figure it out here soon enough.

But The Rabbits are playing a very dangerous game with him - like peek a boo.  Tanks gets a little closer each time.  It's only a matter of time before Old Bugs Bunny will be getting his pencil neck snapped in half compliments of Tankus Erectus . . .

And as for being being better behaved, that's a relative term in our pack.

We train them to co-exist with us, not to be crazy in the house, chill out after all meals and relieve them selves ONLY in the 'dedicated area' - we call it the Zone.  They know. Every once in a while some one will steal third.  We know they get it when a couple will be ruff housing in the back forty, suddenly stop, and head over to the zone to poop it up. Hard parts over after that,  Foster dogs though, that's a whole different story.

Tank got his first squirrel while heading out for his morning constitutional.

A black one; they are everywhere up here.

The deep snow along with the element of surprise tipped the scales in Tank's favor.

A couple of wicked head shakes and it was over.

Of course every trip out since has him on way high alert now.

Yes, we have a prey drive.

Will be interesting in the spring when he wants to ride on your lap while you’re mowing the lawn.

videoing was pretty much done for the day . . .

Thanks ~

It's starting to poke out in a few spots.

But just a few.

Spring 'happens' here REALLY Fast.

Seems like we go from winter to just about summer in only a few weeks.

Once the world unthaws and plants & tree buds start to appear,

the whole deal goes from brown to green surprisingly fast.

Buds are just beginning to show, through the ice & snow.

So it shouldn't be too much longer.

Either way, you can probably tell by the way I'm rambling on here,

I'm more than ready for this winter to end.

And so are the dogs, the little ones anyway.
