  2. My first real success in bass fishing came during the mid to late 70s after I'd found the Arbogast Hawaiian Wiggler at a local bait shop which was the inspiration for the Sally. Finally, I could fish something through pads and heavy grass without worry, and at the time I was using a 5'10" M Ugly Stick and 6 lb Stren. I rarely lost one to break offs, and better than that, I caught bass at a pace none of my friends could keep up with. They didn't always want it, but when they did it was on. Sadly, it was discontinued about 1980, but the Sally fills the gap nicely. It still works. Caught on the perch pattern.
  3. Brakes, whether magnetic or centrifugal, are internal under the palming side plate of the reel sometimes controlled by an external dial on that plate and sometimes controlled by manually setting individual friction blocks. The small cap on the handle-side controls spool shaft side-to-side play.
  4. For now, you'll need to stop with the light-switch thumb after the release. You're not ready for that. Once you get a feel for loading and unloading the rod correctly with a given bait, you'll be able to let baits fly. In the meantime, practice slightly riding the spool with your thumb while the bait is ascending even if you lose some distance in the process. Also, practice pitching with a heavier bait which is a thumb-heavy exercise. It'll help educate your thumb. Backlashes are extremely rare once you've figured things out.
  5. Sometimes that's just how it goes. Those moments stick in one's head for sure, and not to diminish your suffering, I'd take near misses over a totally bite-less blanking any day. That sucks even more, IMO.

  7. 2 coupon codes, thanks and bbb10, and free shipping. Good deals.

  10. Those pics were of water that's at least fishable to a degree. Here's a shot of that lower lake that I gave up on. Looks like frogging paradise, and fish try, but they can't bust through the canopy of tightly overlapped Lillies and pondweed to get it. I've never seen it this dense. The upside is that this year's hatch of bass fry should be safer from predation than in years past, and mature resident fish have a refuge from poachers with no way to fish live bait under a bobber. Lemonade.
  11. "Looks" like they pushed the line guide farther away from the spool like they did with the latest BB1 Pro.
  12. A kid I'd known since kindergarten moved away at the end of 4th grade. Angelo was as Brooklyn-Italian in his speech as it gets. Dis, dat, deese, etc. Ya know. Like a mini Paulie Walnuts from the Sopranos. He came back one day to visit while I was in 8th grade, and it turns out he'd moved to Texas. He was dressed like a cowpoke and now had a cartoonish southern accent right out of an episode of Hee-Haw. Texas can change a boy. Don't change, LMS.😁
  13. Nope, just equatorial Long Island.🤣 I actually started at a lower lake just across the street, but it was way worse, so I gave up quickly. Weedlessly rigged plastics were frustrating to bring back in. Even when skin-hooked, they'd get wrapped up with what looked to me like a new-to-the area type of floating brown-green weed.
  14. It's been nearly 2 weeks since I'd fished my local hole and was surprised by just how choked out it's become with the relentless sun and heat. Just wild. Only had an hour after work but didn't even get that in because of lightning and pounding rain. Managed one scrappy acrobat on the Heavy Poop chucked as far as I could past a weed line and into slightly deeper water. Had to fight her back through the pads, but no problem on a heavy stick and straight 50lb braid.
  15. It isn't broken. It's designed that way. The knob will not add tension whatsoever in this particular model even when fully locked down with the supplied tool. The cap only allows for access to the pinion bearing. Expand on that. Rod and line? How lightweight of a bait are you trying to throw?

  17. Explain further. How often and how bad? Due to where I fish, which is remarkably weedy and padded, I'm fishing with straight 30lb braid most of the time in the warmer months. It's never failed me, and in hot water, and for their health, I want to get a fish out then back in as quickly as possible. I can horse in a 5lber covered in a 5lb mop of weeds fast. Not something I'd ever try with mono of an equivalent diameter or even close. A full spool blowup is very rare with braid. Hooking something on the backswing or clipping a tree branch right after the beginning of a cast is the only way I've ever caused it. I've salvaged most of those too, although some required a couch, a pick, and a few bathroom breaks in between. I don't give up easily. A backlash from user error that occurs at the beginning of the cast typically locks the spool and is usually quick to deal with. Catch the first locking loop, pick it, rotate it out, and you're back in business. Same for a cast where you're just slightly late on the splash down and wrap a few loose loops around the spool. This happens to me at night every once in a while, and it comes right out. Both examples are rare, quickly resolved, and not fatal. Neither seemingly does any damage to the line either. I have some reels spooled with the same braid for over 3 years. I use clips that stay on for months at a time, and without the losses of constant re-tying, this is possible. This isn't something I'd ever do with plastic lines. Additionally, they are often compromised to some degree after a backlash, especially fluorocarbon. Personally, I feel that I need to stay sharp and more deliberate when I'm fishing with monofilament line, especially fluoro. Braid on a bait caster is simply a more carefree experience for me. Also, I've never experienced line dig with 30lb braid unless I hooked a log and dragged it in, and that was years ago when I was dumber than I am now. It casts very nicely, especially typical USDM 30lb 8 strand, and your reel's spool when fully loaded will be lighter by a good percentage than if it were spooled with a plastic line. The advantage here is that you'll be able to throw lighter baits farther and more easily with the same rig. However, you'll need to get used to it. Adjust to it somewhat. Once you do, it'll become a mindless exercise, and if you think mono or fluoro is the better choice for the water you're fishing at any given time, then simply tie on a leader and retain the longevity and benefits of casting with braid.
  18. I've been using this for years. It's fantastic. You can swing it behind to your back if you like, but I find it fine to cast with it on my side as shown. Magellan Outdoors Sling Pack | Academy
  19. If bluegill is primary forage in your area get some in Junebug too. It's been killer here. Strangely, Junebug anything else has been a dud for me around here since forever, but in the Jerk Minnow it's been money.
  20. That one was in August way past the spawn. No bed fishing, and they were smashing largemouth too. I believe Andy Morgan got 93lbs of LM one day.
  21. Find the stage 6 MLF event there from 2 years ago. Smashfest.
  22. Use the 4000 if you like. It will allow for farther casts because spool-lip friction as line is paid out is less of a factor with a larger diameter spool. And don't worry about a shallow or deep spool either. If it's a deep spool or a shallow spool, use backing plus about 200-225 feet of mainline braid. Measure out the braid mainline, wind it onto the reel's spool. Tie some cheap mono to the braid with a connection knot, then wind that on to fill the spool. Reverse all of that off the spool onto a spare filler spool, then again onto another spool which leaves the mono backing's tag end at the top. A bolt, nut, some washers, and a drill gun makes this fast and easy. Tie the backing onto the reel's spool and wind it all on. Now you have permanent backing on your spool for 200 feet or whatever footage you prefer of braid mainline. I do this on my shallow spools as well as my deep spools as to not waste braid mainline. Even a shallow spool will gobble up way too much thin braid that'll never be paid out even on the longest cast, so why waste it?
  23. If the stock gears get meshy I would, but that hasn't happened yet. If they do, I'd definitely get the Hyperdrive gears.
