  1. A bit more than your price, but I've got a Dobyns Champion735c 7.3 MHF Glass rod. I just can't get enough of this thing. I sometimes fish the baits it works best on just to use the rod. Mine's paired with a Curado DC.
  2. The flu has a lot of people either taking vaccines, or have had flu's before and when they get it it's not as devastating or they don't get it at all. The corona virus has no stops.... So, if 1000 people get the flue at 5%, 50 people die. At the same time that the 1000 get the flu, lets say 10,000 (guess) will get the corono virus. At only 2%, but 200 die. Even a low percentage of a large number of people is a lot of deaths. Without a large number of people being vaccinated, it spreads from person to person much more easily as everyone can become a carrier. No stops, it just travels across the country like ripples on the water.
  3. Skunk Fly with a little help from Walmart Okay, don't laugh.... I tied my first fly today just for the fun of it. It took about 30 minutes so you can see not a whole lot of effort put in on my part. I'm actually not much of a fly fisherman. I had eyes around that I use on my hardbaits. And a rusty hook the right size in the bottom of my tackle box. The rest of the stuff pretty much came from the craft area at Walmart. The head has a drop of UV resin on it to hold things together. Just thought I'd try it so see what happens. The wife has already christened it the "skunk fly". She finds the humor in a lot of things... mostly me. She also says it looks like Beaker on the muppets. You're laughing aren't you......?
  4. I'm on the lake. In early spring I wheel the pier in and lock it down. The water is still ice cold. I bring the boat to the ramp and launch it for the season. The slow 40 minute, electric ride down on the surly mermaid, is nice even though it's still early spring and probably still fairly chilly.. maybe 50 degrees. The water is maybe 36-38 degrees as the ice would have just gone out. In winter... this year... I'm in a heated shop learning how to make baits. Nice off season hobby don'tchathink? Fall's a drag. Pretty leaves, then they're on the ground to have to pick up... then the prolific forest looks like skeleton sticks. But the first blizzard hits and I'm happy. Of course in May this year, it's off with the camper to Hershey Park, and Dollywood for several days of steady roller coaster riding. WooHoo! You can't go wrong with roller coaster... as long as they stay on the rails.
  5. I go to a place like Harbor Freight. They've got lots of choices in lengths, curved ends, and sizes. Sometime's they're a couple of bucks. I don't need them to close perfectly for doing precision work in the shop so they're just fine. If they rust a bit or I drop them off the boat.. no great loss. Often I've got another pair or two ready. For the price they're just fine. My split ring pliers and my bait making stuff is much better though. Not fun working with cheap pliers for stuff like that.
  6. Welcome. Lotsa fun here.
  7. New bait... strange one this time. Fashioned (very loosely) after a Goa'uld symbiote from Stargate SG-1 (a TV show with 10 seasons under it's belt). Just having some fun.... Wonder if the Bass watch that show? If they do they won't get near it. You can view the build video here
  8. Until it's fixed I'd make myself a hat. ... tin foil I'm just having fun with this... sorry, it is a real problem for you but it's also sort of a bizarre thing too. It evokes twighlight zone thinking. I certainly hope you solve this issue. It must be maddening for you. Speaking of maddening. Tin foil hat and I'd move all my kitchen knives to another location until it's fixed.
  9. Poltergeist.
  10. I just pull out some line until it feels like It would give enough if a fish grabbed it but not enough so he'd run away with it.
  11. I'm using mine on a Dobyns Champion 7.3 mhf glass rod. It does work best with heavier stuff. Lots of crankbaits here. But I often just use it for lighter stuff instead of picking my my spinning rod. Seems to work fine. Then again I'm not picky. The Curado DC and the glass rod combo though are such a pleasure to use. I look for opportunities to use it whenever I can. I've mentioned before. It's the only rod I've got that with a fish on it the fish fights the pole and the pole fights back. Love it.
  12. Legos should rise to the occasion and match this somehow.
  13. Another Ditto on the chatterbait. Funny because I love fishing with it always thinking that it will be irresistible but deep down knowing that catching anything with it is probably not going to happen.
  14. I have a little Garmin, you know the vertical kind about the size of a cell phone. I look at it as I'm going along. I think..ooo look at all the pretty colors. I use it for my speed and depth mostly. Once and awhile I'll see a fish go by. I get excited and then it exits the other side of the screen. I sigh and return looking at the pretty colors. I've only had it two years. I always wanted one and now I have one. The pretty colors sold me. I recently discovered you can change them in the settings. I'm a simple man.....
  15. Typical excerpt from my recent log book. I've filled it out like this for a long time. It goes back seven years. Date:------ Location: on the water a little to the left of my house Weather: Nice day Bait: perch crankbait Fish: nothing Date:----- Location: on the water a little to the center left of my house. Weather: Nice day, a few clouds Bait: perch crankbait Fish: Somethin's there...I think. nothing. Date:----- Etc....?
  16. Size does matter. I once knew a woma...... Hey, what? this is the bass forum? Oops, nevermind.....
  17. This is... number 5 or 6 I think. Still tryin' Another bait leaves the shop. This one is a Roach bait. A fish only seen in Europe and Asia as I understand it. But it looked so good I had to make one. After making a handful of baits I think this one came out great. New skills with this one, more detailed carving and use of fluorescent paints. As usual, everything is handmade, the body, the eyes, eyelets, etc. The video on this one is only fifteen minutes long.
  18. An extremely light dusting of some spray stuff, enamel, or whatever will stop the flake from falling off and probably won't hardly be noticed afterwards.
  19. On my boat I have a pvc pipe within a pvc pipe so that it slides up and down. I drilled holes and put a clip through it to hold it at various depths. At the bottom is a pvc T fitting. The transducer clamps to it with the supplied band clamps that are used to strap it to the bottom of an electric motor. The wire is routed up through the center of the pipe. It wouldn't stick up much as you need just a short up/down to get it to the right depth on a canoe.
  20. Here in Maine, and living at the lake, I sometimes wait too long to remove the pier and raft. Sometimes I have to get into the water when no one else would. It's just a short time but a swim of about 100 ft (and I grew up in the water) at very cold temperatures is just extremely difficult. The shock of submersion never lets go. Your breathing is shallow and difficult and it just feels like you have to be someplace else, anyplace. Swimming feels dangerous as you always feel on the edge of distress. It's not just hypothermia with cold water. It's also difficult to be in it from the start.
  21. Like I've written about in previous posts. This is my experience. A little fuzz sometime but it settles down. No backlashes once set correctly. I estimate maybe 1000+ casts last summer. I never pulled a thread afterwards from May till October.
  22. Hmmm.... I have hobbies and I love to fish. I'm out three or four times a week in the good season time. But, I don't understand the reason to have an overflow of multiple poles, reels, baits, etc. Yes, enough but just a huge number of items I may never use. I have a good spinning rig and a good casting rig. I make both do multiple duty, sometimes beyond what they would normally be used for. There are actually a handful of baits I use regularly. I like to try something different once and awhile but always return mostly to my confidence baits. I don't fish competitively though and I understand needing to change things up fast to keep ahead of things, but I see casual recreational anglers with more stuff than they'd ever possibly be able to use. I actually know people who have a ton of stuff they carry with them all the time and it's never gotten wet and never will be. Sort of a mystery to me. I guess it may be an addiction. Sort of like gambling anglers or something. I'm flummoxed.
  23. Welcome from a fellow NElander. Maine here.
  24. Winter really hasn't started yet here in Maine. It's mid February and little 4-6 Inch storms. Some zero weather for a night or two then back up to a balmy 35 during the day. Seriously, 35 this time of year is light jacket and get out weather. My lake which should be 3-4 feet thick of ice seems to be less. I saw an auger, from my front window, the other day punch through in seconds. Looked like six inches. No more than a foot for sure. Strange... The National Weather Service predicts winter to extend into March though... there's still hope.
  25. Well, familiarity helps. You take the same route(s) day in and day out and they become very comfortable. Of course this is the benefit of living a life in the same place. On the other side of the coin, it's pretty much all that I know!
