Popular bass fishing questions
Have you ever seen or read "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy"? In the story, Rats are aliens that run through mazes in scientists labs to study our reactions to this of our species. Maybe bass can calculate? Maybe they're doing the same thing. BTW, read the story and you'll know the answer to the universe and everything. Really....

GOOD AGM DEEP CYCLE BATTERY
I've got two of these agm's in my boat that Is strictly electric and runs two trolling motors and electronics for hours at a time. I recharge them at least a hundred times during the summer. I also have one in my camper. Been happy with them. they are mostly used in solar power systems.

Water temp by region
I was a teacher in my previous life. One year I had two girls arrive to my Maine classroom, in February, within two weeks of each other. One from Florida, one from Alaska. The Floridian wore a winter coat to class. The Alaskan wore shorts.

Trolling Motor - Kayak Project (Questions)
hi, I'm the original poster you quoted. I did install the unit when I took the boat out in the fall. It does work but I haven't put it back in the water yet to try it out wet as it's winter here in Maine. I've been using trolling motors like this for a long time. If you remove the head you'll see a red and black wire that is larger than the others. This is simply positive and negative directly to the motor. You can cut or cap off the other wires and connect directly to these. I also cut the shaft down and put a 3/4" pvc elbow on them where the wire comes out. I filled the top of the shaft with silicon to make a plug... just in case. You're right, the motor wires aren't that big. They don't have to be. But, for longer lengths you need a good size to help cut down on the resistance. 5 ft isn't that long though. I use it on a converted sailing catamaran I made. The intstructable is here with some info about the motors. It was made pre PWM though. It also has information on my use of a linear actuator for steering. If you have any questions, feel free to ask

How many carry while out fishing in the boat.
I saw it. It's on CNN and USA Today, NY times, NY post, etc. and the two parishioners who shot the gunman. Thing is, statistics show that it's extremely rare.

Fly tying materials recommendations
Even in my ignorance I ended up with the 210 off the shelf. So maybe lucked out on that.

Did something dumb today
I always tell the kids when they have something like this happen. "No one is sick and we're all together". Put in that perspective, the stuff is replaceable. It's the non replaceable things that happen in life that are important. And we learn from it. My life is replete with stuff like this.

Thank you, that makes a ton of sense.....I was thinking of superglue. The polish is a great alternative. We've got both in the house too.

Fly tying materials recommendations
I took all your recommendations to heart and made a trip to Cabelas. I got what I think I need to get started. I also had to get what they had. Anyway, I had the gift card to use on something and I've had this in mind lately. Left to right -Dr. Slick ceramic bobbin -Bobbin threader -Some bucktail an assortment -Gold and silver tinsel flash -Black and white thread -And I threw in a fish gripper, mostly for weighing as my scale doesn't have much of a hook -And some small split rings because I needed some. I don't have any thread glue but I'll be getting set up with some Alumi-UV and lights soon. I know they use UV stuff for this. I'll have a lot of it so I'll use that when the time comes instead of buying something else. I also have a small standard vise which will be just fine for my meager use right now. Thanks for the info everyone. I'll post my first disaster down the road when I make it! Thanks Jim, I'll give it a whirl at some point. Then I'll know if I need disaster relief!!!

Fly tying materials recommendations
I had decided to do this eventually but with a few gift cards from the kids for Christmas I've decided to put them towards this now. I've been making some hard baits lately and I'd like to tie a few feathers on the trailing treble hooks of some of them. It's a pretty minimalist thing. No big fly tying projects, just some trebles. I'm not setting up shop for anything huge. I know some of you have done this a bit. Similar to these: That being said, I've looked at a bunch of youtube vids and know I need these items: A bobbin Thread set glue feathers and such. ( don't need a fly tying vise, I think my shop vise will do for now for this small project) My question is regarding bobbins and thread: There are so many bobbins out there and each one (that is of the chevy variety not the ferrari ones) have both good and bad reviews. They're not expensive but I'd like to hit it pretty good the first time so I don't have to keep trying one after another till I get one that works. Also thread recommendations. I think I can handle the other stuff okay but any sources you like would be welcome. Thanks.

Bass fishing confessions
Left handed. But I have a righty reel. I do like to manage the pole with my good hand so I pole with the left and crank with the right. It would seem that the pole is the thing that you want to work. The crank is just a hand movement.

(Winter Thread) The perfect tube of crazy glue?
Interestingly... I use a fair amount of superglue, although it's the thin stuff. I share your pain regarding loose caps, clogged dispeners, etc. I have found, much to my surprise, the two small tubes in a package at the Dollar Tree to work the best. They shouldn't but they have for me. Every time I remove the cap the nozzle is still clear. They also have the same thing in a gel. It shows it here as having to purchase 24 but they are single cards on the rack in the store.

DC reel for my brother-in-law?
To make the Curado DC cast well with no nests. The best setting for the DC reel are not what is in the directions that come with it. -Set it to the number designated for the type of line -Put the lure on and adjust the tension knob so that the lure drops very slowly when the tip is shaken. That's it. It needs to be adjusted for each different weight lure but just takes a second. No nests. You can loosen the tension some or a lot if you want to use your thumb.

Are lures made for people not fish?
Yes but lets say you take that into consideration, correct water temp etc. All things being equal, will they bite on one color or the other more if under the same conditions?

So what did you get?
The kids got me a gift Certificate to Cabelas. I think I'll look at hardware, split rings, hooks, stuff like that. Oh, and some pistachios... Other than that I tell them to go easy... I usually get whatever I want on my own anyway. Best thing I got was family together. That's all that's needed really.

What's for dinner?
Tourtiere Canadian meat pie. Traditional Christmas Eve food in Canada. My ancestors hail from Quebec. Our version is an old family recipe.

Winter is here and I’m bored.
The Matrix series (three of them) All of the movies made from Tom Clancy books. i.e. The Hunt for Red October, to the ones featuring Harrison Ford. All the old submarine movies, like Up Periscope or Dive,Dive,Dive, you can also find a bunch on youtube. Heck, think of them as big killer crankbaits. Stargate movies or better yet the tv series. Right now it's on Amazon Prime. The old Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. Just about anything Star Trek. There are 45 continuous years of it. A diverse list and stuff I like....... There are tons of them out there. You'll find something.

How many carry while out fishing in the boat.
This is the old, "even cars can be used as a weapon". Thing is. A car was invented to get you from point A to Point B. Sometimes it's used as a weapon. Anything can be called a weapon but few things were designed to be one. Firearms are designed for one thing. To kill things.

How many carry while out fishing in the boat.
There's probably some political reason the website didn't go beyond 2010.... There's been a steady increase in since 2010 with it peaking at double the rate in the past couple of years.

Anyone use straight braid for everything?
I switched to braid last summer. So far so good. Probably won't go back. I don't use a leader. It doesn't seem to be an issue.

Show Off Your Work!
A couple more recent ones I made. They're lures three and four. I posted my first two earlier. Both about 3 inches long. This one made because I see it coughed up by bass on the deck more often than not. A deeper diving bill. This one because I wanted something very green...The next one will be very red.

How many carry while out fishing in the boat.
Well, your experiences are definitely more than mine. Maybe it's where I live. In my life I've never come across any of the stuff you've had to experience. I once had a drunk guy throw up on my shoe when I was in line for a concert. But then he passed out, so not much danger. But, that's it.

Jon Boat
I've got a homemade pontoon boat made from an old Solcat sailing catamaran. It was a fun build. It has two 35 lb thrust minnkotas. Top speed is 2.5 mph (according to my garmin) with two 100 amp batteries used in solar power systems. 1.5-2 mph is great for trolling. My lake is 4 1/2 miles long. I can do about 3 1/2 miles up and return on a charge with some to spare. I do a lot of trolling as you can imagine, and a lot of stop and casting too. It's a fishing platform much different from the bass boat world many live in. But, it's calm, slow, and so nice on a warm summer day. One of my favorite things to do. So, electrics do work, even on a sizable lake. (BTW, I use lawn chairs)

YES! FINALLY!
I'ts December 21st. The ice just formed for good outside my front door on the lake where I live. It will progressively get 3-4 ft thick over the next several weeks. It will leave around mid April. It's beautiful here. They stock the lake with trout and salmon in the fall. Those fish will grow and be ready to catch in the spring, deep. Then the bass will run a little later on. Southern Maine. We have it good. Northern Maine on the other hand, on the Canadian border will have thicker Ice that will form earlier and last longer. We Southerners feel mighty lucky to be living in the warmer climate. It was 6 degrees yesterday.
