  1. Is mileage about the same on your reels and his? Are you performing maintenance on your stuff? Almost all modern reels will feel smooth when brand new. What has the extra $ gotten you? I guess if nothing else, a warranty ...
  2. Cleaning gears I usually use Simple Green. WD 40 is fine as long as you remove it afterwards. Even wiping down with alcohol should do it. Nothing special to get it off. Its also unlike to damage anything honestly. Unless the reel is baking in the sun or it has more than just residue. IMO its not a big enough issue to tear it down again right away. Fish it and enjoy it!
  3. That WD gonna get sticky and attract dirt and eventually turn to varnish. I would give it another cleaning within 6 months.
  4. If you read the review he is stating it is inferior compared to the previous iteration of Shimano's AR, not to the plastic cage. Old Shimano AR > New Shimano AR > generic plastic cage .. but enough of hijacking Clumsy's thread
  5. I don't think he agree with you doe Inside the clutch each brake cylinder has its own wire spring that keeps it in constant contact with the sleeve for instant braking, and to self adjust for wear. It's a superb design that works with complete reliability and compensates for internal wear and thermal changes, and since it was one day good enough for the Stella it certainly is more than enough for the Spheros. Another component that is shared with the Saragosa SW. Source: https://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/spsw.html The great majority of the anti-reverse clutches in spinning reels have the generic design where plastic V springs are moulded into the cage, and those activate the brake cylinders. Those plastic springs have different life spans depending on the quality of the clutch, but ultimately they lose their elasticity and become permanently set, causing slippage and eventual failure. 6. I don't come to this forum to "win", everyone's got an opinion. I appreciate you sharing yours.
  7. If you're referring to this Shimano AR, I'll agree to disagree.
  8. Hadn't heard of these but they look good on paper. A worm gear at the $100 price point is great. These don't appear to have Stella sealing and the anti reverse is the older white cage style but for freshwater it should make no difference.
  9. Oh yeah...??? Well would a fan boy want a reel accented with green, blue, and red colors to perfectly match any series of Dobyns rods they own?
  10. Anyone here tried the Varivas Very Low Stretch nylon? Labeled as trout line but on the panfish forum many people sing its praises and tout it as a lower stretch alternative to fluoro. https://www.varivas.fishing/products/super-trout-advance-twitch-master-vls/
  11. Dock Demon or nothing ... Its a good kids combo and IMO an upgrade from the snoopy/princess rods https://www.amazon.com/Zebco-Spinning-Spincast-Fiberglass-Anti-Reverse/dp/B07XW34KKX?th=1
  12. $2.59 plus shipping ... probably also need the little cover for it. https://fishshop.shimano.com/collections/vfc3000xgf
  13. Sounds like the culprit may be a bad roller bearing. Check to make sure it spins freely and clean/oil if needed.
  14. Ultralight lines are the only time I worry about precise drag settings, 4lbs and lower, I'm setting to 25%ish using fractional weight plates ... everything else is by feel. If I was using "true-to-test" line I would probably start setting the drag with plates at 6 or 8lb line but im using YZH most of the time so there's a BIG cushion there.
  15. In the couple of reels that I have had with that type of bearing, there was no bearing on the spool tension cap, only a black shim. That bearings was the only spool bearing on the handle side.
  16. I came across my spool bearing remover tool and realized I hadn't used it in a LONG time. So my stupid question to you guys is do any reels still use spool mounted bearings? I know none of my Daiwas or Shimanos use that design anymore but I want to make sure I won't need this in the future before I send it to a home where it's needed.
  17. Not sure, but the felt or drag material shouldn't break down. Worst case scenario I imagine you would clean and regrease.
  18. Should be fine as long as they didn't collect dust.
  19. I've used JB weld in the past. As @Deleted account stated, they typically have 2 chambers (1 for weight transfer with a larger bb, 1 for sound with multiple bbs). On all of mine the weight transfer was on the bottom of the lure and the sound just above the bill. I drilled a small hole and worked a bit of JB weld into it with a toothpick then i shook the bait around to get a feel and make sure the sound bbs were lying center. Let it dry completely and it seemed to have no discernable effect on action. Keep in mind weight transfer will not be in the same place on all baits, but you can often see the weight transfer bb through the bill of the bait.
  20. MAF sensor cleaner or alcohol here. Ive heard simple green needs to be completely rinsed or it can etch metal.
