  1. Buy a good hook file and use it regularly.
  2. More pike when they fished Mississquoi bay. Robertson looks like he's on a foot valve pattern also. At one time, you could go from one little floating bleach bottle to another and catch fish on a lot of them.
  3. I can also see braid ( even the one coloured black) and mono in clear water on bright sunny day. I like the intermitent colour suggestion.
  4. Why would black be less visible than say brown or green ... or even tan or yellow. Plants and floating debris are all colors. Why would a coloured fluoro be less visible than a clear fluoro ??? Clear fluoro is supposed to have almost the same refractive index as water. Wouldn't coloring it do the opposite... make it more visible. ?
  5. I have 4 or 5 Vanfords and none of them are making this kind of noise. Not normal for sure. I use oil to lube the line roller. I do it a couple of times a year. And I checked the roller and it turns but there is no play that I can perceive. You might try putting the line roller from the Vanford in the Stradic to see if it makes noise there.
  6. I've been through a similar path going from the little green box to paper graphs, LCD and the newest technology. I agree that GPS has changed the way I fish completely. No more hours spent looking for those three rocks where you caught that big one. I have FFS now but it's recent so I still don't know how much it will help. But I have been sight fishing for more than 20 years. I live close to crystal clear water and most days, I can see the smallmouth I fish for before I catch them. It's also true for largemouth sometimes. And this is not during the spawn. I like to fish in shallow water but shallow for me is less than 10 feet with that clear water. The biggest change I have made is that when you see a fish you keep your lure in the vicinity. By instinct, you don't want something that buzzes by and is reeled in through 50 feet of empty water. You begin using lures that move even if you don't move them, something that seems alive even if you are not turning the reel handle.
  7. Yes, I tried that. I bought clear hard plastic crankbaits, jerkbaits and floating plugs and just put hooks on them. I fish really clear water and the success was so.. so ! I got more fish with white or bone. For soft plastic, the only time I did it was on lake Memphremagog. One Spring the smallmouths were chasing those little inch minnows. You know the ones that explode out of the water when a bass is chasing them. After trying a lot of things, the best lure was a completely transparent tube with black, blue and red flakes made by Garland. Hey, WRB, you beat me by a minute .......
  8. Here is what I use and like. For larger jerkbaits ( 110 size), I use an original Expride 6' 10'' with a Shimano Curado DC. I like the DC but could very use a regular Curado or Chronarch. This gives me all the distance I need and the flexibility to give the jerkbait the right action and keep fish pinned. The rod is moderate/fast. For smaller jerks (95 and under) , I use a Zodias spinning rod ( under 7 feet) 6' 9 '' MHA with a Stradic 2500 reel. I prefer the Stradic for jerking. I like a stiffer spinning rod because it gives me the same (lure) action as a softer casting rod. For me, sensitivity would be one of the last criteria for a jerkbait rod. A good grip is one of the first.
  9. I began bait fishing with an old Pfleuger 1943. Nothing to help here but a friction knob.
  10. I also have a NRX 901 to compare with the Expride. The Expride is a bit more powerful and not as fast. It is best suited for lures around 1/8 oz and a bit heavier. It gets a lure out there with less effort than the NRX. Very sensitive also. I like it.
  11. I've just received a 7 foot 6 Expride B in ML that fits the bill. I use it for hair jigs, Spy Baits and Karashi and like it a lot.
  12. Jackall Rhythm Wave 4,8 Keitech Fat Impact 4,8 Magdraft
  13. Funny how it is but I'm the most precise with a heavy rod throwing a frog with 50 pound test. I can put it on a pad most times. I like Hackney for precision with a crankbait.
  14. Surflon Micro Supreme is about the best. The steel materal from Amazon is too stiff and will impact the action of your swim bait. Remember, most of the pike that cut you off are the small ones. There teeth are close together and will cut anything, especially the bigger diameter stuff. The larger pike have teeth that are farther apart and a lot of time, regular line ( braid, mono or fluoro ) will settle between the teeth and not be cut.
  15. One thing to remember about jigs is that most bass bite them when you are not moving them.
  16. If the Senko can be called a plastic worm, yes bass can remember. When I first started to use this particular lure, it was almost magical. Today, most of the magic is gone. It is still a good lure but absolutely not in the same way.
  17. I don't have any confidence lure/style. I go where I think the fish are using my eyes, my knowledge and my instruments and then when I see a perfect situation, I use whatever is the best lure/style to catch them.
  18. When there are four brakes, you can use 1, 2, 3 or 4 on. They don't have to be in pairs.
  19. Same comments as everybody else. I use a MH rod around 7 feet with a baitcaster loaded with 50 pound yellow braid. I tie direct to the frog and, when there is a strike I let the fish turn before I set hard. You still loose some but not like you are experiencing. I live close to you so I fish the same type of water.
  20. I find an 8 ratio to fast for anything but bottom baits. I would put it on a 7' 2'' MH Curado and go skipping under docks with a scat.
  21. No, that's not OK. Somebody at the tackle store took one out and there should be 4, even when some are not used. Get in touch with the store or Shimano to get one of the little plastic brake tabs.
  22. I'm lucky. I often fish a river where you can see the bass you are fishing for. (St Lawrence). That is not common, but I can go to several different areas, in fairly shallow water ( 3 to 6 feet), and sight fish for smallmouth. It's like bonefishing on flats. The bottom is whitish so you can see the fish. This is not during the spawn, so the fish act differently. They are not tied down to a spot and they can roam. I use FFE: foward facing eyes. I've been doing it for the last 20 years so I'm getting good at it. The first years, the fish were easy to catch. Now it's getting more difficult. I don't know if I should write some of the thing I learned. They sound funny, but here goes. You can do what you want with the information. Lone bass are the most difficult to catch. Groups of fish with uneven numbers ( 3, 5, 7... ) are the easiest. One fish on the edge of the group will often head for your bait. The first cast is the magic one. If you miss your target, it gets more difficult. Then you are better of going to another group of fish and coming back after a few minutes. You can ''activate'' fish by casting to a loner that is a few feet from the group, making it head for the group and then casting to the group. When you cast to a group, you can see the if fish get excited by the way they move. The last one... yes, sometimes you can smell bass feeding... You get a faint cucumber scent.
  23. The Expride is an excellent choice. The PLUS + series is a later series that went on the market at the end of last year. You should be paying less for a rod without the PLUS + . Two Expride rods with the same number are pretty much the same. The PLUS series is a little stiffer but not by much. I would not go under 6'6'' for an all purpose rod. A lengt of 6'8'' is my favorite.
