  1. Wasnt sold on them either until I actually tried them and I dont use Trig nearly as much. I can really pick apart a small area with more efficiency because I work the entire water column vertically without moving the weight at all, or at least very little. As long as you use a weight heavy enough to break away from the bait quicky you get a near vertical fall with heavy salted baits, if that's what you want. I actually found floating baits to work best. If I give the line slack it will float up off the bottom and I get bit a lot doing it.
  2. Im surprised to see that. I couldn't imagine Rapala dropping him, hes on the ball when it comes to product plugging, probably one of the best in his generation, especially for VMC.
  3. They're doing away with Dbraid too. Always wanted to try it, but never got around to it. Supposed to excellent.
  4. Yea, but thats the exception to the rule. I throw metal up to 3/4 on my DS mojo for snappers in the surf, but I dont have to set a hook through plastic. The mojos are heavier MLs then the vast majority of them with a 1/8-1/2 rating compared to a rating that effectively over loaded above 3/8 like most newer MLs.
  5. Thats one of my favorite things about the older Muse is that grip. 13 seems to put a lot of effort into high quality custom grips/reel seats. If MB2 is as good as MB1, theyre worth the money for sure. 13 stands behind their rods, even if a breakage is you're fault. A buddy of mine got an Omen with a scuff on it. he reached out to 13 and they sent a brand new 1 and told him to keep the old one. What really blew me away was he bought it from some online dealer, not 13 directly.
  6. A Vanford is a better match for a Flyssa. That lighter weight really helps sensitivity.
  7. I dont think Rebellion sold too well. People bought them, but they probably sell 15 or 20 Tatulas to every 1 Rebellion. The line wasnt very extensive, just a few versatile lengths and powers. I was curious about buying one a couple years ago, but I couldn't find too many too much info on them and no shops around here carried them. I did finally get to get hands on one at TD last summer and I liked it, but its got some tough competition @200$.
  8. If your using a lighter rod, Ive found that you dont need too much stretch in the leader. InvizX or even Red Label would work really well, they both have stretch. If you want a premium leader material that has some give and is a little softer than others try Yo Zuri HD. Its actually soft on the outside and has give to it, but somehow its tough as nails. I use it for light tackle jetty fishing and it kicks ass. Ive flipped 6 and 7lb stripers on up on the jetty with 10lb line lol. I think its knot strength is better then harder FC leader material, like Blue label and Premier.
  9. Youre going to be overloading a ML with a 1/4 + plastic. I would go with a M at the very least. A lot of guys that are big into free rigging swear by certain JDM MH spinning rods. They have a softer tip with a stiff backbone. If I were you I would try that Tatula and see how you like it and go from there. If the Tatula is too heavy check out a MB SH or Enforcer.
  10. If its a slight bend not a bad kink you can warm up the entire bag next to heater or fire place. Once theyre warm you lay them out flat, or as you want them to set and take them outside (if its cold) or put them in the fridge. The colder it is the better they set. If its a bad kink, really hard crease or you have a ton of them to straighten, then I think youre better off just using hot water to heat them up.
  11. They better be good, because the Muse Black line was outstanding. Not crazy about not having an exposed blank in the reel seat and I would have liked to see the keeper on the split instead of above the winding check. While 13 may have success selling them people who own the previous model its going to be hard to get customers new to 13 to buy them, IMO. That price point (and + or- 30$) is absolutely stacked with proven home run rods, Zodias, Expride, Champion, Tatula Elite, Levante. 13 had a rod that was supposed to take the PP of the previous Muse @180-200 called Widowmaker. It was supposed to be out late spring this year, I think they axed it.
  12. Sorry. I thought you were looking to buy an outfit now. Omen Blacks are being discontinued as the new Meta has taken their place and same story with Exceler/Fuego. TW has them on sale now for a good deal which is why I only suggested them. The sale lasts through the 9th and after that its unlikely you will be able to get any kind of discounts on those products as they wont be around anymore. SC Bass X would be a good alternative to the Omen black. If I were you I would definitely take advantage of the opportunity to get an Exceler, @ 60$ nothing comes close. Really its a Fuego, minus magseal and a bearing supported spool, both of which aren't don't make any difference in performance. To get a reel of equal value you're going to pay double the price.
  13. I really like Dobyns blanks and intricate power/actions. I just really dislike the lack of a foregrip. IMO the best rod Ive used that closest that price point is probably the Tatula. Way more comfortable and more versatile IMO. Balance wise theyre both great, with Tatula feeling the lighter of the 2. If you want to fish light neds and DS then the 7'1 ML is ideal. The 7' M F is more of an all around versatile spinning rod. It will handle plastics like wacky rigs and weigtless t rigs a little better, but still is plenty light enough for more finesse techniques.
  14. If you can spend the money, get the best outfit you can. Right now the 7'1 M F 13 Omen Black would be my recommendation, with a 2500 Revros or 3000 Exceler. Omen Black uses one of the best quality blanks you can get at that price point and the ergonomics are great. As far as utility goes the 7'1 M F is like a power finesse rod. As I said about the reels, Revros is great, but that Exceler is well worth the extra 25$. An ounce doesn't sound like alot, but I assure you it makes a big difference. The lighter the outfit is the better sensitivity you have and its just easier to fish with. The threaded handle of the Exceler transmits power to the main gear far better then a hex pin and has a smoother feel. Line wise I would suggest braid to leader over FC. FC can be a nightmare for beginner and advanced anglers alike. Constant line twists and memory could really be discouraging. With FC you ant a reel that has a high quality line roller to mitigate twisting, which you dont really get at a lower price point. You need to learn how to tie a connection knot, but thats really easy, a double uni is as simple as it gets and works fine. The extra sensitivity, casting distance and cheaper cost of braid makes it an easy choice in my mind. Like anything else, you do have to manage it and make sure you dont reel in too much slack line, that will cause wind knots. Starting off a stiffer braid would be best. I would suggest 8lb-10lb suffix 932 or power pro. If 8 or 10lb seems light, keep in mind the breaking stregth is considerably higher about 12lb on the 8 and 15 on the 10. You will need to use backing or tape under the braid so it dosesnt slip on the spool. If youre unsure on how to do it, I suggest going to a tackle store and having them do it for you. That ensures you have the right amount of backing and that the braid is nice and tight on the spool.
  15. I cant shine any light on river smallies, but Ive got some a lot of experience with the older rods and how they compare to the newer ones. The new SCs, especially the blended blanks, SC3 or 4+ seem lighter in power for the most part. Really, if they did the make the same rod in the Avid line, the blanks have changed considerably for the most part, especially the ML XF. They now have a more progressive taper and are softer tipped. You have to go up in power it seems, to get a similar deflection. The rods that haven't changed as much are the higher end Legend lines. They still have that sharp feel and extra fast recovery. The 7'3 XF SC3+ is closer to that 1/8-1/2 ML XF SC3 action and power wise, then their new MLs are. They still offer the older style 1/8-1/2 ML in some of the inshore lines, but I think they're only available in 7' and up. The best thing you can do, if its possible, is to get them in your hand. Some people love the newer rods. The balance and ergonomics have improved drastically, but I've found the softer actions have a detrimental effect on sensitivity, particularly with the lighter power rods.
  16. There all Gami hooks. The G finess Tricky head is a custom hook, I think. Greenfish uses that flateyed sproat in a finesse swimjig, so they may be available.
  17. I odnt think 3600s would fit right side up. You could get at least 4 3500s though. I use them for storing soft plastics still in the bag and they work great. Ill take 1 of these and a backpack or small tackle bag if im going on a buddys boat.
  18. 2/0 with a short shank. Not too many around in the lighter wights I like to use 1/16 and 3/32. Theyre expensive, but Picasso makes a really good one. Normally I dislike screw locks, but these are pliable and don't really get in the way. Bite Me Tackle has great one, but the eye is horizontal instead of vertical. They come with a Gami sproat hook and are perfect for finesse worms. The keeper is really effective, but the baits dont last as long. For longer worms my favorite SH is Gamis Tricky head. It does everything well and has that Oshaughnessy style hook which just sticks em. The shanks are a little long for 4.5" worms IMO, but work great for 5" or longer. Really like the keeper ass well, it hold traditional plastisol and elaztech really well.
  19. 13 makes a good 6.7 M power. Theyre designed for treble hook baits and wont be too stiff to pull hooks. Really all the M power rods I've used, other then some much older SC Ms, had enough give to work with trebles. Even if you use braid the rod usually has enough give to avoid tearing.
  20. 6th sense has them and theyre pretty good. I like the magnum bags.
  21. Decoy Dream hooks are great for really light line. They have a really thin wire, but its plenty strong for big fish.
  22. Ive done it in a pinch but its not ideal. Wet plastics can get underneath the inserts and spread salt throughout the entire row.
  23. Either a 2500 or 3k are best IMO. The difference is really just handle length and a slightly higher IPT with the 3k. I like 3ks for T rigged/wacky rigged plastics or anything you're working the bait with the rod and 2500s for neds, swimbaits or anything you're working with the reel. Honestly I like a slower gear ratio in the low 5s for the majority of FW reels, but Shimano USDM is all in on tournament bass ideology that a faster reel is better.
  24. The fish around here like to group up in stump fields in the winter, but will often feed on the baitfish that are using them as cover as well. A lipless is one of those baits that can get a reaction bite or get a finesse bite when worked slow on the bottom. I like to either use 2 lighter wire double hooks, or use light wire round bend trebles. The 2x short EWGs are good because they tuck in really well, but that short shank is very hard to bend compared to a longer shanked round bend, I suppose its due to leverage, and once an EWG is sunk into wood its tough to get them out. IMO its a compromise, the EWGs dont get snagged as much as round bends, but once there in they're considerably harder to get out. Some of the better-quality lighter wire hooks have a tendency to break before they bend in really cold water, Ive seen that with Duo Nanos. It gets expensive, but its better than losing a TN70, or shutting the whole school down trying to wrestle it free with a lure retriever. I do like the double, but the only ones I have been able to get recently have an open design, like blade bait hooks. What happens when you try to wrench the bait free is the shanks just open up instead of the bend in the hook.
  25. I think JBs, specifically MBs work best on straight FC from 6-10lb with 12 being the heaviest I will use. I do use braid to a long FC leader with my spinning gear and it works well, but the water I fish is very shallow and I don't have to get deeper then 6ft. When using PE that bait moves about as far as youre twitching the rod tip, so you have to be mindful of being to aggressive otherwise you over work the bait or get blowouts. If you want the bait to get as deep as possible its best to use 6 or 8lb FC IMO.
