  1. Zeeso, When you spool your reels run your line through the middle of a phone book this will give you about enough tension on the line to properly lay it. Overuns mostly from an improperly setup reel, I would say read the pinned artical on how to properly set up your reel. You could have th cast control to lose, not enough brake, take the time and read it... Good Luck & Tight Lines!
  2. X2... I have 2 - 30yr old Abu' that I fish yearly on HEAVY cats. They don't wear out with proper servicing they get better.... AS a rod builder... The only rods I have ever seen that lost any action where rods that weren't stored or maintained properly.. Tight Lines All!
  3. .ghoti. the key to those abec7's being so quiet is the Stainless Steel instead of Ceramic. They respond to clean/lub much better/quicker than ceramic's ever do...
  4. Sounds like someone from AZ hasn't seen the snow and ice that covers a lot of this nations water still...
  5. X2.... I have had exstensive talks with a service tech friend at Shimano (not Bantam1). The stock bearings are ABEC3 used to be stamped but we haven't seen any stamps on my supplies of 3's and 5's. You will find some of the really higher end Shimano reels (DC's come to mind) that do use 5's in the spool support train. Before I would change any of the bearings in those reels, I would deep clean them and properly lubricate as Mike stated. You will see a giant chnge in the feel and castability. Also I wouldn't wast any monies on bearings in a spinning reel unless the bearings are toasted, and then only with stock's. Just this service techs .02¢ Tight Lines!
  6. Yup the oldman does have a great collection of tru classic round reels, all serviced by guess who... I think the OP was asking about the classic round (70's - 80's all which have the raised emblem), of which the shimano round line are not..... Tight Lines!
  7. X2 Actually any hand held rotoray tool will work. You just have to know how to use it....
  8. You could always measure from the heel of the fighting hand to about 1" from the front of the elbow. That in this rod builders opinion would be the ideal length for a 1 piece rear grip on a pitching/flipping system... Tight Lines!
  9. For filipping or pitching I wouldn't use anything under 10".. For using the fore arm leverage in fighting... Just the .02¢ of a builder... Tight Lines!
  10. The truth for sure... Put lipstick on a pig, it is still a pig....
  11. I have 200 rods in my arsenal, all custom builds.. So I would say CUSTOM!
  12. Clean out the AR bearing, use a q-tip wetted with bearing oil and swab the pins with it. Also check the sleeve that sits inside for hair cracks at the tabs or base. (drag is very tight otherwise) Then when repaired back off the drags "there are no reels manufactured today that can handle direct drive drag settings" they all have a fail safe installed.. Just the .02¢ of an old tech... Tight Lines!
  13. X2... The base thinking for every service tech that is worth a d@mn.. Tight Lines!
  14. My question would be are you efficent with the three systems you have now.. Trying to expand the arsenal to fast can hurt in the long run..... Good Luck & Tight Lines!
  15. X2... Here ya go with a perfact example of a re-branded reel, no support for it... Good Luck & Tight Lines!
  16. Very nice work... It will all be worth that long winter wait, on the very first hook-up with any one of those baits... Good Luck & Tight Lines!
  17. X2 and thats the facts Jack...
  18. Powerhand casting/fighting (right handed), left hand cranking....
  19. KV700HX is what is called a signature reel, not supported by the reels MFG. When Quantum told you to send it in, meant they were going to replace it not repair it. IMO all rebrands, and signature reels are a waste of money... again just the toughts of an old service tech...
  20. Only 2-3 brngs that really matter in a baitcaster. They are the spool support brngs, all other are located in the crank assembly (crank base, knobs, etc) for smoothness in cranking. As far as brngs go the tolerances will be the differance.... More is not always better.... Just an old service techs .02¢ Tight Lines All
  21. papajoe222, Excellent work....
  22. Your reading about baitcasting reels. In spinning service I use a little heavier oil and grease especially for reels used in salty conditions. I don't pack the bearings they are oiled and just a cover coating will keep most all moisture out..Baitcasting reels get very light bearing oils, and grease is used sparingly (gears only).... Tight Lines & Make sure you have your schematic out..
  23. I'm with Mike cant see enough detail. ...Victory:
