  7. This info here is from the website....... I just love media hype.... Tight Lines!!!
  8. I would say no, they use "Batson Forecast hard aluminum-oxide guides with double-plated black chrome frames". But you don't have to go that far/expensive (Fuji Titanium Framed SiC) just replace them with Fuji® Alconites, and pay better attention to what your doing... Just the .02¢ of an old rod builder.. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
  9. I agree with Delaware Valley Mike, it isn't bonding... I say it is staining it. If I run a (HS) lubricated reel through my cleaning tanks I have to change the tank (5gals of degreaser) and the charcoal filter. Just so I won't pass it on to other reels, that's what it does. That is why I don't like it.. If I get a reel that has HS in it, I now have a special pre-bath to cut the grease and oil (leaving the stain only) then the parts go to my good tank. The Rooster, You will have a hard time getting the reel to look like it doesn't have some left behind..... Lots and Lots of scrubbing! Quantum® reels don't suck just the lubricants they use!! Of course they have the media hype and some papers to say that it is the best... Been servicing them as long as I have been servicing the rest, Quantum® reels were better when they were using Zebco® oil to lubricate their reels....... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!
  10. Could be the reel but could also be line wrapped around a guide or somehow fouled. Check everything... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
  11. I had 2 of them but to be honest I barely remember them, got into Kunan & Fenwick rods when those speedmasters were out. The best person to ask about that rod would be bantam1 over in the Shimano® Support. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
  12. Thanks flechero, Currently the kits are all sold out (we had a run on them). I just re-stocked my lead and will start pouring more and getting the kits re-stocked ASAP.. Tight Lines All!!!
  13. First off they were wrapped with A size wrapping threads. The only way to get that fixed properly is to have a professional rod builder do the job. The guide has to be cut from the blank, the blank has to be prepped to place and re-wrap the guide, then a quality rod thread finish is applied, and the rod turns for about 8 hrs to cure and level. Just the .02¢ of an old rod builder.. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
  14. Use a Q-tip, spin it in the shock ring of each guide. Any fibers left behind is the tell that you have a grooved or cracked shock ring in the guide and the guide needs replaced..... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

  16. I store some of my custom rods in my basement. The best way to keep the mold down is use a de-humidifier and keep the humidity at about 50%. I store my DVD collection (800+ of them) down in my media room (half of that basement), and have never had any mold or health problems, even when the water table (which is quite high now after our last 8" of rain) gets to high. The other way to fix those cork grips would be to dry them in the sun and seal them, as for eva sun dry and like I said dehumidify... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

  19. I know about the chemical nickel coated levelwind systems on the C3 and C4's, the TIN coated Levelwind System for the Inshore, but I don't know anything about ceramic pawls. Maybe oldschool will chime in, he restores and customizes Garcia® round reels... When I have to buy parts for Garcia® reels I only deal with factory parts.... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
  20. Yes sir. Interchanging pawls into different (same MFG) reels won't work for very long, no 2 reels break in the same. Reason one works were one didn't and vise versa... Any sticking of the line carriage is a result of dirt/oily grime that has gotten into the cuts on the worm gear and packed up onto the pawl blade. Usually cleaning will fix the problem, but if the pawl has some wear from the dirt and it can't sit fully into the worm gear cuts, it will not travel as it should. If you have had a line carriage bind at one time and cranked through it, you could have caused some slight damage to the cut in the worm gear that you can't see with the naked eyes (well maybe 20-20 eyes). 8-) But to make a long answer shorter, yes replacing both should fix the problem..... Make sure you have the right schematic, there are 5 for the 5500c3-99 these are the part numbers from my schematic.. Pawl (#5176) Worm Gear (#24603) Contact Garcia® @ Abu Garcia Service Department 1900 18th Street Spirit Lake, Iowa 51360-1099 or call: 1-800-228-4272 Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
  21. It probably isn't the worm gear, the pawl is the culprit. Remove the pawl cap and look at the blade of the pawl. If there is a crescent moon shaped wear mark then it is time to replace it. This should be the fix. If not you will need to check the worm gear, check the area on the worm gear that is were the line carriage starts to stick. Remove the worm gear and take a close (4x optivisor) look at the section you marked, if the cuts in that area show damage then you will have to replace the worm gear also. Just my .02¢ Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
