  4. Yup I saw custom salt rods in custom turned split wooden grips when I worked the tackle shop in San Diego in the 80's, they wound up on the half/full day boats... I should have stipulated in the bass rod industry they are really quite new... Tight Lines!!!

  6. They are a product of the custom rod industry, they started about 6 years back if I remember right. They helped the builder balance rods buy aiding in the placement of reel seats and not adding weight with super long full cork or foam composite grips. Once they caught on then they became an area that allowed the builders some creative freedom. The production rod companies are just catching on to them, their using fore grips in pairs like crazy, nothing like a quality custom turned and placed grip set...... I personally travel with both full size and split style cork grips in my custom arsenal, the split grips do get more looks/questions though. Just a thought... Tight Lines!!!

  10. That syncopated system was designed to help with casting distance. As the line peeled from the reel, the line carriage moves with it, less friction on the line and line guide. Only down side was a break off that was cranked up through the guides and past the spot on the line stack, meant that the line peel and level wind location would be out of sync re-threaded. But they are great reels, even better when you get the quality worm gear and spool support bearings in them. Addend.. Garcia® did have a couple of LP reels that I remember being a bear to service one had a line carriage that opened full width of the worm gear when the thumb bar was depressed for casting. The on the first crank it was supposed to close. I use the supposed word here because they mostly didn't work worth a - - - -. They also had another LP that when the thumb bar was depressed for casting the line carriage would disconnect from the worm gear and the line was supposed to move easily with it when peeling from the spool. Again another ? Tight Lines!!!

  17. In today's economy it is cheaper to have reels tuned and super serviced than to try an budget for new gear..JMPO Also if it was more to bring the reel back up to specs than the reel is worth I would say so and not take the work, have been this way for decades. I tried to view the video but I am working with a 90's dinosaur here, and it doesn't like photo bucket at all. So I didn't see what the line carriage is or isn't doing. But like flechero said it could just be a worn out line carriage pawl, unless it tried to cut a new path on a bind up. Then it would be a worm gear replacement and pawl replacement as stated by grimlin. I agree that you could do the replacement yourself but only if you have broken a reel down to remove the major parts before. If not stay out of the reel and have it professionally done. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!
