anyone use rod n reel to catch shiners for bassin'?
RoLo has hit is almost right on the head, except I use your typical Hog Feed. Go to your local feed store and pick up the cheapest hog feed they sell. A 50lb bag shouldn't cost more than $10.00. I picked one up the other day for $9.00. I go to the spot a couple times a week and throw about 4 or 5 Handfuls out. I will also fill a zip lock bag with hog feed and tie some braid to the bag and cut some small holes in the bag and just throw it in the water this will attract the shiners. You can use a 12 hook and a little piece of bread and catch a good deal of shiners. I actually did this last Sunday and caught about a half dozen shiners in about 10 minutes. I didn't have my cast net or I'm sure I could have had at least 2 dozen shiners in about 3 throws.

New Boat
Yeah I see what you are saying but you also have to remember to add $945 to that price for the trailer. And I enjoy doing this kind of work, it makes you feel good when you get it done. With the Trailer I'm looking at $5582 compared to $3832 for the 1654 AWL. That is a difference of $1750. I already have the console all I have to do is find a way to remove it from my boat and connect it to this boat, but that shouldn't be that hard. So the only cost I'm looking at is wood, carpet, livewell, wiring, possible new trolling motor, and Time. Then this will make my boat my boat nobody else will have the same boat, because my mods will be mine. I just don't see all that costing more than the price of the 1654 SC plus I would still want to carpet, possible new trolling motor, and extend the front deck. I still have to talk to my dad anyway to see if he wants to go in halves on the boat and take the outboard off his old boat. We'll have to see what happens. Micropterus - how stable is your boat? I would like to have a pretty stable boat. Are you able to get up on a plane with the 15hp, if so how fast to you run GPS. Thanks in Advance.

New Boat
I have been looking for a new boat for some time now, and I think I finally found what I have been looking for. I am looking at the Tracker Grizzly 1654 AWL modified v-hull boat without a motor. I have a 35hp evinrude that I am planning on taking off my old 14'6" aluminum boat. Does anyone on here have one of these boats or have any of you fished out of one of these boats. I am planning on extending the front and back deck and putting in a livewell in the back deck. I am also planning on decking out the floor of the boat and putting in a SC from my old boat. I can get this boat brand new from Bass Pro with a trailer for less than 4K. Is this a pretty good deal or should I look for something else. The problem I am having finding a boat locally is I don't need a trailer all I want the boat for is the boat I have all the other parts needed for this boat. What do you guys think. This boat look like it would be pretty easy to modify. Here is a link to the boat http://www.trackerboats.com/boat/specs.cfm?boat=2877

Bass Boat w/o Motor
Thanks for all the responses guys, i'm not even going to waste my time going to look at this boat. Let me tell you guys what i'm looking for. I'm looking for an aluminum boat about 16' - 17' long with a modified V hull without a motor. Doesn't have to have a deck or anything on it, that is something I would like to put on myself. Does anyone know how much a boat like this should cost new. I can't find any prices online to price this kind of boat. Also which manufacterers should I be looking for. It also doesn't have to have a console. I should be able to remove the console on my old boat and put it on the new boat. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bass Boat w/o Motor
I already have all the stuff I need trolling motor, and I only need one battery because the motor is pull start and my depth finder is portable and runs off of 2 6v batteries. I guess the only thing I am worried about is whether or not I will be able to get up on a plane. Even if I only go 15 maybe 20 miles per hour I am fine with that. What do all of you think. Would it help to try and take some weith out of the boat like the big gas tank it probably has and just use the 6 gallon I have now. Is there anything else that would help this boat get on a plane besides a bigger motor.

Bass Boat w/o Motor
I have the possibility to buy a bass boat without a motor. It is 17' and apparently had a 150 hp motor on it before. I have the opportunity to buy for $699 obo. I think the man said the boat was a 1982 Sterling with a trailer, but i'm not sure maybe some one else can tell me. I was wondering would this boat get up on a plane with a 35 hp motor. The reason I ask is I have a 35 hp motor on an aluminum boat now but it leaks pretty bad and does not handle any type of chop well at all feels like it is going to fall apart. I don't have the money to buy a bigger motor and I fish in a small boat club that only allows 17' boats and 40 hp or under so I don't really want to go any bigger. How fast do you think this boat will go with a 35 hp motor and was this make and year of boat any good. Here are some pics.

devil's horse man
Just a little update on the amazing devil's horse but this past weekend me and my fishing partner fished the Classic for our local tournament and won with 10.69 lbs. We exclusively threw the devil's horse all day without ever changing it up. We caught at least 2 or 3 limits of fish and they were hammering the bait all day. bass just absolutely hate this lure and have to strike it. my fishing partner threw some other top water lures at our one spot we fished all day and couldn't get a bite. oh yeah we won $800.

devil's horse man
here is the image of the elusive color don't know what makes this so good but it is. this is the smallest version that I have seen smithwick make. It is only about 3 inches long.

devil's horse man
I'm sure somebody else on this forum knows what color i'm talking about. It is a legendary color that I search for on ebay and local tackle shops. Sometimes you can get luck and find some on ebay but i'd like to be able to get them a little cheaper than with a bunch more people bidding on these items. I can't stop somebody else from divulging this information but if i can find a picture of one on the internet I will post it on here.

devil's horse man
I live in the area that Top Water Charlie fishes and I have seen him on one occasion fishing in the Juniper Springs Run during a tournament on Lake George or a nearby lake. I have heard about him before and have heard stories that Top Water Charlie was some sort of fishieries biologist that works for the FWC and he would do the testing of water to determine the bass population for certain lakes that connect to the St. Johns river as well as other lakes in the area, becuase he knows where the fish are and that a devil's horse will intice a bass to bite even when it is not hungry he fishes it very slow and deliberate. The devil's horse drives bass crazy and they will hit it just to try and chase it away. I know from exerience that the Devil's Horse is one amazing lure. There are some modifications that need to be made to make a devil's horse really work. 1. Take off the front prop 2. Replace the back hook with a bigger hook (this will make the back sit a little lower in the water) 3. Turn the rear prop around While the chrome and black is a great color there is a better color combination that smithwick no longer makes (supposedly) and is very rare to find. I will not tell what that color is. I have three of these lures and one is still in the original package. When a local tackle shop somehow got these in stock he was selling them $15 each and he couldn't keep them on the shelves. They are well worth it.

Boat in a truck bed?
you can put a 12' in the back of a truck very easy. I have a 12' that I put in the back of my Yukon with the rear seats down. Just make sure you put your battery or a cinder block to hold it in the truck. I also strap mine down but a buddy of mine leaves his in his truck without any staps and he has never had his come out. Go with the 12' it will stay in the truck just fine, and you don't need the bed extender. Like I said I put mine in the back of my Yukon.

mushroomhead vs slipknot debate (metal fans)
From what i've heard so far nobody like rap-rock, but there are some good rap rock cd's out there. The first limp bizkit cd was awesome, the first pod cd, but they both kind of sold out. If you actually like rap-rock and want to hear some real good rap-rock from a band that knows what they are doing listen to HED PE. They kick and have been around a long time. They know what they are doing.

Mudfish
Why would anyone want to catch mudfish, they are a horrible fish. I hate mudfish. I have actually started a group called FFAB (Florida Fishermen Against Bowfin). I kill every mudfish I come in contact with. Take out the knife and make a nice big slice in thier belly and toss them back, they are a nuisance to bass. They eat bass fry and eat what bass eat, so they take away the food supply from the bass. KILL ALL MUDFISH.

Transducer Suction Cup Problems
yeah i have the same one and it always comes off when i am moving or get in some weeds. I have found it stays on a little better if you get it wet first and try to get like half of the suction cup out of the water, it seems to work a little better. I've been thinking about making something more sturdy so it won't come off when i'm running. but i'm still thinking up ideas.

Cabela's Fisherman Series Grave Digger
Has anyone used these baits? Are they comparable to Mann's Baby Minus 1. They look like nice baits, but I was wondering how they hold up, how is the wobble is it tight or loose. I have been having trouble with the mann's baby series eyes coming off, and while I don't think it affects the bite it affects my confidence. Just wanted everyones opinion on these baits. I know there are a lot of threads about crankbaits, but I haven't seen these mentioned before.

4/06/07 Tournament
Yesterday me and my fishing partner fished our second tournament ever. The day started out really crappy, I forgot to put the plug in the boat so we started out with some water in the boat, but the bilge took care of that. Then the weather was nasty I live in C. Fla and the weather saturday was in the 40's and winds up to about 30 mph. We started out in a spot where we caught fish the week before pre-fishing but didn't catch any, so we moved to a different spot and caught a few dinks, by 10:00 we had no keepers in the boat, then we started catching a bunch of fish most were sub 14" but we managed to put the 5th keeper in the boat 5 minutes before weigh-in. We were 12th to weigh in so we waited around for a little bit. From how everyone else was talking is sounded like we were the only boat to catch a limit. We get to weigh in and one of our fish ended up being 1/8" short so we get disqualified from the tournament. If the 5th fish wasn't short we would have taken 2nd and if we would have kept 4 we would have taken 3rd. There were 23 total boats in the tournament so we did really well for only this being our second tournament. Next tournament is next month. For anyone living in the area the tournament club is the Deltona Small boat club. The club is for boats 17' and smaller and engines of 40 hp or less, so it is good for people with smaller boats. It is fun but there is come competition also, if anybody wants some info about fishing it just ask me. Has anybody gotten disqualified from the tournament for having a short fish. If we would have taken 3rd place we would have won about $100. So it kind of sucks that we kept that fish, but there is always next time.

Holes in my boat
I have a 15' 6" Grumman Aluminum boat and it leaks a little bit so used some truck bedliner coating to plug up some of the small leaks everything looked good so I decided to take the boat out and go fishing on Sunday. I get the boat out and run to my spot and start fishing. I'm thinking everything is good until I start seeing some water in the bottom of my boat. So i'm like what the hell why is there so much water in the boat. I don't worry about it for the next 15 minutes and I turn the bilge pump on to make sure I can get some of the water out. Then I start noticing a lot of water in the boat and the transom is only like 3 inches from water coming over it, so I start bailing water so I don't sink my dam boat. When I get the water level low enough I decide to head back to the ramp, there is no way I am going to sink my boat. So I get the boat on the trailer and back to the house and I find 3 pencil size holes in the Hull of the boat. I have no idea where they came from but they were sure leaking a bunch of water. Today I went to Auto Zone and got some quick steel and plugged the holes from the inside. They were all in a small area. I'm gonna fill it up with water tomorrow and see if it still leaks. Hopefull everything is good to go now, but I still think i'd be worried about it everytime I take the boat out. Has anyone ever plugged holes in an Aluminum boat with quick steel? If you did, did it work? Do you trust it not to break of start leaking again? If this doesn't work I don't know what i'm going to do. I guess i'll have to start fishing out of my 12' electric Jon boat again.

LEAST favorite brand
Maybe some trilene line is crap, but I know a lot of pros use Berkley Trilene Big Game, that line is awesome. I agree with Renegade they suck, I haven't fished my Storm stuff but the chug bug is an awesome top water lure, and also I recentely bought two Norman crank baits and I couldn't get either of them to run straight. I love the berkley frenzy series hard baits I have always caught a lot fish on the Frenzy Ratl trap in fire tiger color. My least favorite brand is probably Rapala, for no reason really I just don't like them.

Garduation trip
GO TO STICKMARSH!!!! Book a trip with one of the experienced guides at Stick Marsh, you will almost defenitely catch a 10 lber. I have never gotten a guide trip there but I have been there 3 times and on my second trip I caught a 10 lber. It was awesome, and a guide will be able to put you on a ton more fish, and the Florida weather is great for fishing especially in the summer.

King Shad
I was thinking about buying one of Strike Kings King Shad but they are $20.00. I wanted to know if anyone here has tried one, and what they think about it before I buy one. I watched the Bassmasters on ESPN this weekend and saw the KVD was catching bass on it so it obviously catches fish, but just wanted to know if anyone has an opinion about it. I live in Central Florida and I fish the St. Johns River a little south of Lake George and I also fish some of the smaller local lakes. Let me know what you think about the King Shad.

putting line on a bait caster
I would not recommend removing the spool, if you a spool with the holes in it i usually just put the line through the one of the holes and carefully start spooling the line after you get a couple of turns start pulling the line tight until it's completely tight and just continue spooling while keeping the line tight, I know some of you might say what if he gets spooled, I have never been spooled and you should never get spooled by a bass no matter how big it is. I find this the easiest way to spool a baitcaster. Hope this helps.

BPS Extreme Baitcast Reels
I was wondering what everyone on here thinks of the BPS Extreme Baitcast Reels. I currently have 3. I have the GT40X Reel with the matching All-Star GT40X Rod 7', 2006 BPS Extreme with a Woo Daves BPS Extreme Rod 7', and I have the new Silver 2007 Limited Edition BPS Extreme with a matching 6'6" BPS Extreme Rod. I love these rods and reels the one i've had the longest is probably 3.5 years and it is still as smooth as the day I got it. Never had any problems with any of them. What does everyone think about these reels.

Inexpensive Rod for Curado 200B?
If you want a cheap rod that will still last go to wal-mart and look at the Berkley Lightning Rods ($30) or look at the Abu Garcia Conolon ($35 - 40). Both are very respectable rods for the price. I would recommend a 6'6" M or MH rod for all purpose baitcasting.
-
Berkley Lightning pro-lite Hank Parker trigger rod
The new 2007 lightning rods are great for a budget priced rod, you can get them in FL for under $30. I use 6'6" MH Spinning Rod with a Guide Series Tournament Edition Spinning Reel. You can't beat a lightning rod for the price, and if you buy at wal-mart you can always take it back if anything happens to it.

Ultra Tuff lining
I had the same problem with my john boat, go to wal-mart or autozone or any store that sells hardware products, and the aerosol bottles of spray on bedliner, just make sure you get the more expensive can. I tried the cheaper stuff when I bought my boat and it was crap, but the more expensive stuff works really well. Here is what I did: 1. Completely clean the inside and outside of the boat. 2. Put your boat up on saw horses or something that will keep it off the ground. Spray all the rivets on the inside and sides of the boat. Make sure you get a get coating around all the rivets and make sure you get if from all angles. This stuff takes a while to dry especially when you are coating it on pretty heavily. If possible turn the boat over and completely coat the underside of the boat in the spray on bedliner. Allow to dry and your ready to go. My boat used to leak a lot and now I get no water in the boat at all. You have to re-apply like once a year, but the a can of the stuff only costs like $7. Hope this helps.
