I believe he hooked her in the back with a jig. She ran across the line, he felt it, and he set the hook into her back.

If you didn't see him swimming around the surface later or on his side, he should be fine.

Yes! My main reel is a BPS XPS baitcasting reel. I like it a lot. I've got a fish eagle rod, I use for frogging. The tiptop got bent( no idea how) and the insert broke out but it hasn't cause any problems yet, and wasn't the rods fault. I've got an old Rick Clunn BPS baitcasting reel that cast farther than any other reel I own, and farther than my buddies expensive reels(shimano, diawa,etc). I've tried an old carbon lite combo and wasn't a fan, the casting on it was weird. But yes, there rods and reels are good.

I go out with my buddies, they take the boat I take the yak. I can't keep up and fish with them since they have a trolling motor, and I have a paddle. They go off and I fish for an hour or two, they come check on me and we talk about what we've seen and caught, then they leave again and the cycle repeats. It's nice to have that time to fish by yourself, and then nice to have someone to compare experience with and brag to!
