Why is it?
Well my worthless drunk of a father left us for the last time when I was 5. My Mom raised us 6 kids best she could scrubbing floors and washing other people clothes. Had it not have been for the Salvation Army and a couple of churches we would not have made it. We were set out on the street more than once with what little belonging we had. Anyway if we did anything wrong my mother would miraculously appear with a big cape, a folded belt and a big "W" on her apron that stood for 'Whoopin" and it was was 100 proof, pants down with a belt if it was bad enough. Oh Buddy, I didn't forget those. I would not cry at first but she would keep on till I did! Yep, professionals. I could hold about forty 8 penny nails in my left hand (point down) and feed them out as fast I needed too while nailing down plywood... tap and two hits.

Why is it?
Way back when I was framing houses there were no nail guns, you used a long quality hammer and swung it like you meant business. Even back in the late 60's a good hammer like a 22oz Vaughn cost like $35.00, that was more than a days pay back then. Today an equal hammer would run about $50+ Not many can really handle a hammer today like carpenters back then, it's mostly all nail-guns now. Although maybe I was not a cordless impact driver, I sure could swat nails and I'm talking ALL day long.

Creek bed
Or... a dry creek bed such as you would find in arid places. P.S. I've never caught anything in them and they are hard on lures!

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
Yep, looks pretty good. I understand it is made to be somewhat "snag-less" but where are the sunken logs, branches, channel roots and rock crevices in that video? Works good in a gravel fish tank but a $20+ bottom scrubber is eventually on a suicide mission.

Big swimbaits on spinning gear?
If that's all you have then for sure that will work. I throw some pretty big baits on heavy spinning gear but for baits heavier than 2 oz I use a bigger baitcaster and heavy rod made to throw swim baits. As long as your spinning rod isn't bent like a noodle just holding the bait you should be in the ball park. A good MH spinning rod with braid and a mono leader will work up to about 1.5 oz after that you need to go with a little more rod when you can afford it. Plenty of good used rods to be had... I bought a used $100.00 St. Croix spinning rod today for $40 bucks. Gave the rod and cork a good cleaning and it looks new! A River2Sea S Waver is about 1.5 oz and is one of the best gliders out there and you can throw it on a good MH spinning rod. You don't always need a 20 foot bass boat and a $400 bait caster to successfully catch big fish.

Any smokers out there(?)
I smoked for 32 years, started when I was 14 back in 1962. Back then I believe more people smoked than not. People smoked everywhere, restaurants, movie theaters, airplanes, stores, buses, waiting rooms, high school even had a smoking area for students. Smoking was cool... It was presented that way in the movies, on TV, in magazines on billboards. Commercials catered to smoking, the rugged Marlboro Man was on every commercial segment it seemed. Smoking was IN and a lot of people smoked. Nothing was better than lighting a cigarette after a fine Thanksgiving dinner or other "social event". I quit smoking about 28 years ago so I would not set a bad example to my four daughters growing up... It was hard. Doctors say my lungs look good for smoking that long and your lungs will regenerate if they are healthy ~ guess I lucked out. Unfortunately two years ago I watched my best friend of 52 years die of lung cancer after smoking for almost 60 years. He wasted down to 75 pounds in less than four months, wasn't a pretty sight and certainly nothing "cool" about it. My older brother had a lung removed and what was left of the other wasn't much. We didn't know back then what we know know.

My old Lab going to heaven today...
Looks like Zeke had a full and happy life. Sorry for your loss. There is no more devotion than a dog can give. I have 4 of them sleeping all around me right now as I type this on my computer.

Two months in the Alaskan bush fishing for steelhead...
Thank you. There was a logging camp about 10 miles away. We went there a couple times a week to shower ~ that was a BIG help!

Found more hair in wifes reel than on top of my head.
Sounds like you needed hair spray more than you needed oil.

This Makes Me Mad.
I don't know why people put fish in a live well without a good reason. Just release the fish when you catch them. Why keep a bunch of 2# bass? I know guys that catch bass, put them in the live-well and fish all day collecting more. Then pull up beside you and start pulling fish out to show you what they caught. They say they are going to release them at the boat ramp~ *sheez*

Two months in the Alaskan bush fishing for steelhead...
"How long have we been fishing now, a week without the first steelhead?" I said to my older brother as we stood fishing in the rain on the banks of the Thorne River In southeast Alaska. We had traveled the 1,600 miles from our homes in Anchorage to Prince of Wales Island to catch the famous ocean run steelhead that would eventually run up this river. "They are just not here yet but any day now," my brother assured me. It was just about that time that the first steelhead slammed into my silver spoon that I was bringing back through the current. It felt like I had just hooked onto the back bumper of a truck going by at sixty miles per hour! The power was unbelievable and the fish burned off drag in a high pitched whine heading upstream, then turned and headed downstream. I trotted to keep up with him and regain some line. After several minutes of back and forth the nearly 3 foot long, twenty five pound steelhead was in my hands at the edge of the river. Beautiful fish and as bright and shiny as a new dime with the faintest of a pink stripe running down his side. I released him. "Holy cow," I said to my brother, "that was crazy!" ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That was in the spring of 1976. The next year my brother (also an artist) painted this 2' X 3' painting of our adventure. We had gone there to catch steelhead. We camped on the banks of the Throne River in two tents for over two months doing just that. The painting depicts my brother catching a steelhead with his girlfriend beside him and his dog. I am to the left of him holding a nice steelhead. My girlfriend by the fire. With Prince of Wales Island being a rain forest, the only thing he left out of the painting was the near constant rain. I had to dispatch a black bear that hit our camp four times. He was becoming more brazen each time and it was time for him to go. My brother gave me the painting as a gift on my 30th birthday. He has since passed on. Back then the Island was a remote place with a small population of loggers, commercial fisherman and a Indian village. Today it is grown up into a commercialize sportsman paradise with many lodges. There are black bear, wolves and Sitka deer there not to mention some great fishing. It's the 3rd largest island under the united States flag. Painting and some stock photos of the island...

Beef
Less than a year ago gas around here was about $1.65 a gal. Now it's north of $3.00 and going to go higher until it surpasses the high gas prices of 5 or 6 years ago. What similarities are in play here? So in 7 months we go from the worlds top oil producer with the lowest gas prices in over 30 years, to shutting down pipelines, off shore rigs, drilling on federal lands. etc. Gas prices have already doubled and it's not over yet. The American dollar buys more than most other countries, hence the higher prices in those countries. Once gas hits above, say, $4.50 a gal nationally here , that is going to hurt a lot of people in their wallet. People can not afford that, nor is it necessary ~ Politics ~ At this time please prepare for departure. Fasten your seat belt and place your trays in their full upright position.

Beef
Not the place to elaborate and we may not agree... but to give a vague reply out of courtesy ~ Gas prices go up, everything goes up. Certainly no shortage of beef. Back-track to why gas prices are going up and you'll find the start of the problems. There is a plan to most everything that happens. The broken cog in the wheel is there for somebody's purpose ~ nuff said.

Another how big is this bass topic.
I had "best guessed" 27" to be on the safe side but 28" could squeak in there. Small head, big long body, fat too. Guy has a body lean just holding it. Would like to know...

Another how big is this bass topic.
Now that's a big slab-sided bass. I'd say north of 13#. Hope you can find out.

Beef
Yeah, I and most Americans know where the bottle neck is and it's not the processing plants.

New PB, how much do you think this weighs?
Well I can't be as generous as most.... What I see is a big hollow head and a tad over three pounds of meat. Still a nice bass though ~ congratulations David.
