Sounds like your line is too light and your bait is too heavy. Re-tying often helps with break offs too . Watching your bait launch into outer space just happens every once in a while though.

Right now I use a 7’ rod. I’m 6’2” and I keep hearing how I should use a longer rod , so I might try it one of these days

The lure I use when I can’t buy a bite is a finesse worm on a 2/0 offset worm hook Texas rigged . If the wind is fairly calm I go weightless. If it’s a little windy I put a 1/16 oz bullet weight on .

At lake Maloya I lost a BIG trout for my wife that way. That is the fish we never speak of. Same story a lot of you are telling , but I was the line grabber. A couple of people were standing there watching and one of them says “hey I know what you can buy him for Christmas ...... a net “
