  1. At what water temp do you guys consider “fall fishing” to be in full swing? I’m in NY and I’ve heard guys up here say mid 50s… but we’re still like 15 degrees above that. The air is getting colder, but the water hasn’t caught up yet.
  2. Dropshot for sure. It’s a boring way to fish, but when they bite it… it’s not boring. Like others, I’ve struck out on Jerkbaits and t-rig worms. Someday maybe I’ll figure them out.
  3. I have the 6’10 medium (2 of them, actually) and they are indeed fast and crispy. Great way to describe them. I wouldn’t go up to a MH unless I was fishing jigs with heavy hooks.
  4. Braid to long copoly leader for me.
  5. XZone lures are very similar. They’re super stretchy.
  6. What are these fables? I also live near Lake Ontario and would love to know what the old timers say.
  7. Dropshots with worms. That’s what the guides typically do, at least earlier in the summer. This late, maybe they’ll do something different. Please share your experiences and enjoy your time up here. The St Lawerence is absolutely stunning.
  8. This year alone I’ve seen carp eat a red colored lipless crankbait in a river and one eat a perch colored trout style crankbait in a small lake. I was always told that this DOESN’T happen… but clearly it does.
  9. I have a couple of those rods, both spinning and casting. I like the spinning rod version because it’s stouter than most and I use it for skipping wacky rigs and such. I use them often. I’m not crazy about the casting rod version. It’s a decent generalist type rod for lighter stuff, but doesn’t excel at much. I don’t use them much.
  10. You can do what you need with those rods, but since you asked for advice, I’d change a couple things: 1. I’d want a slightly longer rod for your jigs & t-rigs. Something like a 7’2 MH/F is what I’d want. 2. Setup 2 is great. 3. I’d want a fast action for topwater frogs/toads/etc. And a bit longer too. And a bit more power. So, maybe a 7’3 or 7’4 H/F. I use a 7’2 H/F and it’s almost perfect, but longer would be better. If I could only replace one of your setups, it would be #3. Then #1 as funds allowed. You seem to have a good understanding of gear and are on the right track. Take my advice for what it is, just my own opinion.
  11. Congrats. Sounds like you’ll be rocking a sweet ride either way. Enjoy!
  12. With straight braid I’d go MH/F. Around 7’2 or so. Maybe a omething in the Ark Tharp or Cobb series at that price point. Or a St Croix premier if I could find one on sale.
  13. Burned out on social media? Yes, FB and IG are dead to me. Forums, however, will never die. As someone who wasn’t taught a lot of skills as a child, I have learned more from forums like this than anywhere else. I am deeply grateful for this forum (which is one of the best) and others. Thanks Glenn, mods, and all you guys who so generously share your knowledge and experiences to help folks like me.
  14. I am also having this problem on both mobile and desktop.
  15. Weedless topwater is also a great option in shallow areas like that.
  16. If I was targeting all 3 species on the same rod, I’d be using 15 lb braid. A far as color: yellow if I was going to use a leader, green if I wasn’t.
  17. First, that salesman sucks. Second, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’d fish the promix and enjoy it. Life is too short to quibble.
  18. Thank you. Anyone else have recommendations?
  19. Hey, I'm on the hunt for some high quality bass (or fishing in general) themed art and puzzles. The art would be for my office. I really appreciate classic paintings in the style of the Hudson Valley School, which tend to have dark earthy tones and sweeping vistas. I currently have a beautiful painting of deer by a lake painted by Albert Bierstadt (it's a print, of course) and would love something similar in a fishing theme. My wife and I are also really into puzzles. We love Americana style (our favorite is Charles Wysocki), but if anyone has a lead on some good bassy puzzles, I would greatly appreciate it. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!!
  20. Because despite people saying that fish don’t care about seeing it… that’s just so hard for me to believe. If someone could make me believe that, I would fish braid for everything and be a happy man. I love braid.
  21. Someday I’ll figure out how to skip with a baitcaster, but for now I use a 6’10 or 7’ medium spinning rod and it works great with “soft” soft plastics. can also work great with other t-rigs like Senkos and such too. can also work with squarebills and lighter crankbaits in a pinch.
  22. Disclaimer: I’m not a pro. This time of year, the only thing that seems to make a difference is cloud cover. So, if it’s cloudy in the morning, I go then. If it’s cloudy in the evening, I go then. Low clouds and low barometer are even better.
  23. “Punctuality is the politeness of kings.” - Louis XVIII He was right. I am passionate about punctuality. Being on time shows honor, being late shows lack of personal discipline and dishonor for those around you.
  24. I still don’t think I understand all that my father gave to me and my siblings. He has spent his entire adult life suffering with severe environmental and food allergies. He suffers almost constantly, even now into his mid 60s. As such, there are many things I have never been able to do with my dad, like fishing, for example. But, every morning when I woke up as a kid, my dad would be sitting in his recliner reading his Bible. His faith and consistency over the years helped set me on the path I’m on now, and for that I am very grateful.
  25. Haha I’ve spent WAY more on fishing gear than hunting gear (not including firearms). But, to answer the OP, we have a new short anterless-only season in September now here in NY for certain WMUs that have too many deer, according to the DEC. Well, I went out with farmer friends and we were able to fill 7 tags on Saturday night. A huge blessing for my family to fill the freezer, with leftovers to share. Will try for a buck in November, but the pressure is off for now… which means I can keep fishing!!
