  1. Ok, I have to admit I didn’t know there was a connection between spool size and the types of lures you use them for. Can you guys educate me on this a bit, or show me where I can learn more? How is this different from the other Daiwa reels I have: - Tatula 100HL - Tatula 100HSL Also, you mention using them to skip. That’s a skill I’d love to develop. What about this reel makes it good for that use?
  2. Good question. It’s a Steez SV103
  3. Hey everyone, I ran across another really incredible deal on a bunch of used gear, including a Daiwa Steez (103SV 6.3:1). This will be my nicest reel, by far, and I'm wondering what to use it for. Most of the baitcasting reels I use are Lews Speed Spools and a couple Daiwa Tatulas. I've always been happy with them, but now that I'm getting something significantly higher end, I'm wondering where I can get the most use out of it. Are there certain techniques where a nicer reel makes a big difference? I'm pretty familiar with how certain rods excel with various techniques, but is the same true with reels? Beyond the gear ratio, what is it about a nice real that makes it better for certain techniques? If you only had one really nice reel, what kind of rod (length, power, action) would you pair it with and how would you use it? Thanks!
  4. Me too. Just placed anoooother order. Oh well, shouldn’t complain about such low prices.
  5. My Supreme XT is my favorite reel. The regular supreme is great too, but the XT is awesome. I couldn’t put my finger on the specific difference from a user standpoint tho.
  6. I use braid to leader on ALL my spinning rods. The braid mainline negates the problem of line twist and the leader makes knots easier, breaking off easier, and makes the line sink at a useful rate (depending on what you use), all while making it less visible in the water. That's lots of reasons, at least in my mind. I use the FG knot and have never had it fail. Ever. Going to try braid to leader on a couple of baitcasters next year a bit and see if I like it.
  7. I tried to get in on this, sold out in minutes ?
  8. Grabbed a handful of jigs, chatterbaits, and spinners. Looking forward to trying them in the spring!
  9. Good post, BigAngus. I’m hoping to be a boat owner soon, and this helps me a lot.
  10. Anyone else have thoughts on usage? Am I right to use braid/leader for the jig and t-rig rod? That’s what I use on my spinning setups, but never tried it on a bait caster before.
  11. Hey, I just got a slammer deal on a certain social media marketplace. Four older (cork/cork split grips) St. Croix BassX casting rods for $190 total. Here they are, along with how I'm planning to set them up and their primary use: 7'1" Med/Heavy Fast - 15lb YoZuri (heavy spinnerbaits) 7'1" Med/Heavy Fast - 40lb Suffix braid with leader (jigs & heavy texas rigs) 7'4" Heavy Fast - 50lb Suffix braid (frogs & toads) 7'11" Heavy Mod Fast - unsure what line to use (deep cranking & umbrella rigs) Questions: - What do you guys think? Is this how you would use these rods? - What line would you use on the 7'11" for deep cranking and a-rigs? I'd probably use 14lb fluorocarbon for the deep crankbaits, but that's probably too light for an a-rig. Maybe I could throw a-rigs with the 7'4" heavy with braid? - What else would you use the 7'11" rod for? Thanks everyone!
  12. The advice given by F is good. 3/0 for the paddletail and don’t sweat the spinnerbaits. If you use a trailer, use something small and simple like a little fluke or shad-style bait.
  13. Hey man, thanks for asking. If you want to see almost all of the 600+ of the knives I’ve made you can check my instagram @danfreda which is my name (Jackstraw is a character from a book I liked as a child). I made knives under the name of DF Custom Knives. Here are a few pics showing a hunting, combat, and camp knife. I was privileged to make knives for everything from hunters and weekend warriors to elite military units. It was a great season of life.
  14. If it comes out well and you’re pleased with the results, then yes of course!! Because yes, I’ll be copying you
  15. I happen to wear a lot of Eddie Bauer and Duluth flannel. Unfortunately, they both shrink. The best solution I’ve found is to buy a size bigger and let them shrink. I don’t do my own laundry, and my wife has her hands full with the kids and just runs my flannels with everybody else’s clothes. They shrink. It’s a fact of life. So I just buy a size bigger and let nature run it’s course.
  16. Make sure to post pics when you’re done ??
  17. Anyways, yes, Social Dilemma was great. Got me off a lot of the socials and I’m much better for it ????
  18. Thanks Glenn, I appreciate it.
  19. Hey, I see guys using the phrase “slack line” when it comes to bite detection conversations often. My question is, what techniques do you consider to be “slack line”? Basically, what lures are fished with slack in the line? Most of the time, there is at least some tension between my rod and the lure I’m fishing. The only real exception I can think of are things meant to be bitten on the fall, like a wacky rig and certain other weightless plastics… but I’m sure there’s more. What am I missing? I ask this because I’m getting ready to re-spool some reels and I’m trying to talk myself into not giving up on fluorocarbon line, which has given me lots of trouble in the past. The consensus seems to be that it’s better for “slack line techniques”… and I want to know what that means to everyone here. Thanks!
  20. The little ZMan frog is my favorite. Leap Frog I think it’s called.
  21. My favorite rod is my 7’MF St Croix Premier. It’s excellent.
  22. Yeah, it stinks big time. 2 of my kids have it and I think my wife is starting to show signs… Sorry man, rest up and feel better!
  23. The broken foot part does fit between the fingers nicely... but this is NY and I'm fairly certain that "broken reel pieces" are prohibited by the SAFE Act.
  24. That's the kind of creativity I'm looking for haha.
