  1. Does acetone or brake cleaner effect sealed bearings?
  2. If I can chime in. There’s not a backlash proof reel. The reel braking system can possibly lessen the chances/ frequency of a backlash. You can increase the braking while getting used to the reel. Then as you get more time on using the reel. You can lessen the braking. As for the difference between US and JDM. I don’t think the JDM’ are covered under warranty in the states. I think if you have a warranty issue. You have to send it back to the seller and they can forward it to warranty service in Japan. That or bite the bullet and pay for the work in the States.
  3. I saw a question about reel maintenance and the common mistakes people make doing maintenance. I didn’t want to hijack that thread. So…. For yall that do your own reel maintenance. What do you use to clean bearings? What do you use to clean the rest of the reel? I come from a more firearms background. You might be amazed at what some people use to clean and lube firearms. There was people that competed in handgun competitions. They said to use brake cleaner and motor oil. To clean and lube it. I’m f I remember correctly. Pretty sure I do. One well known optics manufacturer used to say to clean the lenses with acetone. I’m wondering what y’all use for reel maintenance? Tia
  4. AFL has the Black Friday sale going on. Mega Bass Orochi rods are 100 bucks off. That’s a good deal in my book. I am liking the specs on Daiwa CT reels. For 150 I think it is a good deal. You mentioned that you want a higher end reel. You might want to look into Daiwa SV series.
  5. You can always send it into DVT. Have him go through everything, order parts if needed, upgrade things inside. I think he does a bearing upgrade to corrosion resistant bearings. Something to consider.
  6. If you’re checking sales. You might want to check out Sportsman’s warehouse. They have a good sale going on right now. You might be able to find a higher end rod around the price you’re looking at.
  7. I know Amazon has JDM reels. I don’t know if they have JDM rods. At least the return policy is good.
  8. I was looking at their rods little while ago. I didn’t really like the colors I saw. I figured it was not a big deal to repaint the rod. Just scuff up the paint on the rod. Prime it then put whatever color you want on it. Heck even put a color changing paint on if you want
  9. Thanks for explaining that. Makes more sense now. The Falcon LowRiders I am looking at the Weightless worm and All Around Fast. To confuse things even more. lol. For a little more money. There’s the Shimano Intenza A. The 2 I’m looking at there. A 6’10 MH XF and a 7’2 MH F.
  10. I’m looking at the LowRider series of rods. I don’t see understand what they mean by power 4,5,6. I’m used to seeing M/F or MH/ F. How do the LowRider rods compare in flex to other rods? Like do the fast run true or does it run more x fast, or? tia
  11. I did some quick Polish math. 5” Senko 10 grams. 1/8 oz weight- 3.54 grams. I couldn’t find the weight of EWG hook. I’m thinking a rod rated up to 5/8 oz would be good to go.
  12. I am sure golf tour players have it different than pros fishing. Golf tour players don’t have of the rack clubs. The loft, lie, bounce, grind on the bounce, weight, placement of weight, shaft, grips. All setup specifically to their specs. Golf tour players have the ability to go to the tournament. Go and get a club made per specs from any of the golf club manufacturers. I’ve never heard of fishing rod, reel manufacturers following the tour in case a pro needs something from them. It seems rod/ reel manufacturers could work with pros to get them setup. It might take a while to work out the tweaks. I don’t know if it’s financially feasible to do it though. It’s not cheap to switch out tooling to make rods/ reels. Especially if it’s not going to be mass produced.
  13. I took a quick look at rods. The St. Croix triumph 2 piece med/ fast 7’. I think it’s around 110. The Tatula XT 2 piece med/ fast around 100. Abu Garcia Veritas 2 piece med/ fast 7’. This has titanium guides. I think around 120. These should give you some options to check out
  14. I’m thinking you could try a piece of scotch tape. Tape the guide in place. You can use the same piece of tape to hold the beginning of the thread wrapping. Kinda how the old persimmon wood golf clubs were wrapped around the hosel.
  15. I tend to agree with the saying Kiss… keep it simple I don’t know if my fat little fingers will let me thumb the spool like y’all. My little pea brain seems to think that the simple reel brake is centrifugal.
  16. I think I might give you some strong competition in making bird nest. I think I would be a pro in no time.
  17. What ever do you mean, overthink things. Meeeeee noooooo🙄 Ok. I’ll admit it. I tend to overthink things. Trying to figure out the pros and cons of things before dropping money.
  18. My thinking on this. The amount of heat used to dry the paint. Is way less than it takes to effect the plastic. The paint would be messed up before the plastic would be effected.
  19. I’m wondering what bait casting reel you use? What type of brake system do you prefer centrifugal, magnetic, digital? Why do you like or dislike the brake system? Is one brake system easier to control for a newb to bait casting? if this has been asked a bazillion times before. Admin feel free to… hey dude this is the bazillion and 1 times it’s been asked. Check XYZ. Then delete if so deemed.
  20. Fishing isn’t Archery. In archery most start figuring out draw length like… wingspan divided by 2.5. That gets most people in the ballpark. Unless they are a knuckle dragger or NY Yankee. Then throw out the ballpark. For fishing rod. I’d say go with what you’re comfortable with. If it’s not comfortable for you. You’re probably not going to like it. You probably won’t use it much. To me it doesn’t matter if you are 5’ or 7’. If a rod fits your hand, casting style, and feels good. By all means use that one.
  21. I’d say it depends on how you use it. If normal use I would say every 2 years or so. If you’re fishing in some nasty waters. More often. If you drop the rig in the water. I’d do a deep clean. That’s my thinking at least
  22. Kidding around aside. I agree with the above comment. When the first deep cleaning/ maintenance is needed. Take it to a shop and ask them to replace the part while it’s taken apart anyway.
  23. I was thinking something similar happened. I’m thinking someone yelled squirrel. Then Cujo the terrierist tore off after the nonexistent squirrel. Knocking over the rod. Then Cujo got upset at the rod. Biting it several times until it stopped moving.
  24. If I may chime in. I’d talk to your doctor. See what he says. That and listen to what your body is telling you. There might be days where you have lotta energy. The next day you might be really tired. Having a good support group around you helps. More than you might think. As someone else mentioned. The mental health is a big boost. If after talking with doctor and depending on how you feel. If you want to go out and fish. Why not? If you go out and sit on a dock or bank of a river. I think that would help you feel little better. When I was fishing the rivers in Washington. Half the fun was just being out with nature. Seeing Mother Nature at work. Looking up and seeing eagle flying over the river. It’s the beauty of nature that relaxes and heals both mind and body.
  25. A buddy of mine spent some time in Japan. He was telling me about the subways. I think he called it subway surfing. It’s where you can pickup your feet and not fall. Cause everyone is so packed in
