California fishing and hunting licenses go up every year like everything else. The license fees use to support wildlife management but 25 years ago were put into the general fund. Now wildlife management struggles for funding every year. With our current DFW haven’t seen a warden on the water in years and the immigrant population doesn’t buy licenses, they may not even know it’s a required! My last fishing licenses was $63 with non senior discount! A few years ago California started a life time fishing license $692, if I was 65 it would be a good, in my 80’s not good odds. Several States have free senior licenses and that also skews stats. Tom

We live in a Mediterranean climate controlled by the Pacific Ocean currents. The closer you are to the ocean and sea level the more stable the climate temperatures are. We average around 30 temperature difference night to day year around. Further away from the ocean and higher altitude the temperature change significantly. During the winter our rainy season the freezing/ snow level altitude is around 5,000 feet. Where I live freezing temps happen occur a couple of times a year. If it’s 30 degrees in the morning it’s 60 degrees in the afternoon. We look at snow capped mountains while bass fishing in 50 degree water during our winter. Tom

The OP’s sonar needs are minimal and buying an entry level unit now would indeed help the learning curve. However today’s state of the art units 2 years from now will be well under half price. Electronics value drop like a rock. Tom

Generally lower frequency uses a narrower beam for deeper water use. Anything under 60’ the standard frequency should be all you need. Use manual settings to optimize your signal return. Tom

Don Iovino’s booklet Finesse Bass Fishing and the Sonar Connection is a very good tutorial on basic 2D sonar. 2D sonar is down looking boat transducer shooting a signal to the bottom and displaying a history of what the transducer recorded. It’s not a real time display on the screen GPS is standard today on nearly every unit for bass fishing. Surface water temperature is included within the transducer. To get scanning sonar the price goes up significantly. Think of the transducer like a flash light beam it’s very small close to the flash light and gets wider further away but it isn’t a flood light it’s a narrower beam anything outside of the light beam isn’t displayed. You can turn up the brightness or lower the it, same with sonar you can adjust the signal power. Tom

Talk to the owner of the pond would be my 1st suggestion. What type of terrain is the pond located at? Unless the pond was dredged out the bottom should be the same as the surrounding area. Does this pond have a dam? If it does start you bottom contact C-rig there. Tom
